E3 2014: Exploring Different Approaches in Tom Clancy's The Division

In a behind-closed-doors presentation of Tom Clancy's The Division, Ubisoft attempted to highlight the open and varied nature of post-pandemic New York and its hostile inhabitants. We saw the same area played in the above video, but approached from a different angle. The dynamic time-of-day shifting also saw this take place at night, which Ubisoft vaguely claimed will affect the nature of the enemies you'll encounter.

As the Division agents entered the large open area toward the end of the demo, they avoided heading to the large base of operations and instead went to liberate a small shop from an enemy force. Inside this shop was a generator that could be activated to increase the security of the surrounding area, similar to the way liberating an Outpost in Far Cry 3 affected the presence of nearby hostile non-player characters.

The shop was put under the Division's control by killing all nearby enemies. This then opened up the safe house seen at the end of the above gameplay presentation. Ubisoft claims that these safe houses will provide benefits and bonuses to players, but it did not elaborate on the exact nature of these. Because Ubisoft was not willing to go into specifics, it was difficult to get a sense of how open the world of The Division was, and how different encounters in the same areas could be.

All you guys are aware that the voices of "Player 1, Megan, Bronson, and Chris (Tablet)" are not in-game voice actors, but supposed to be representations of real players actually playing the game and experiencing as we might?

Obviously it's an idealized version of in-game chatter, only very organized groups of players (guilds, outfits, etc) would stay so focused on the game, or possibly role-playing players. But it's only supposed to be a representation of ideal ways for the game to play out, and the dialogue also helps point out features of the game "Hey, let's change up our skills" that might be missed otherwise.

It's a tactic for a stage demo, nothing more.

So were they trying to make it look like multi player played by players all talk over voice chat? or were they trying to show that the AI voice acting change itself according to the situation like: I am pinned, I can't get a shot, coming this way, "Chris it is all on you" etc..?

If it is scripted AI for the demo - it sucks. IF it is AI communication that adapts to the combat and environment: that's cool.

If I am not mistaken those characters are suppose to be a part of the story.. so I don't think they would really try to fool us into believing those are real players ... Maybe they are showing off the AI? (wishful thinking?)

Anyone have the answers?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Its all scripted. Every last part of it was thought of ahead of time. But then, what do you expect devs to do when they play their own game, be creative and enjoy it?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don' know... I guess you are right. Especially that "Chris" (TABLET) thingy. I know that the may character is the same as before.. and Megan suppose to be a story character that will be in the game regardless. I don't think it was multiplayer. Unless it was an attempt to show off coop. Is there even COOP in this game? One of the representative designer said that the game features some areas that are known to be PVP. He didn't mention anything about COOP PVE (player against enemy).

<< LINK REMOVED >> It was scripted multiplayer. They did a similar thing last year with the first gameplay video. I'm not sure if I like it or not but at least they're doing something different.

Voice acting is always cheesy in stage demos. Sounds so unnatural... Game looks awesome though.

Article was very vague.. at least let us know how the game looked, how was the lighting at night, On what console was it playing on, how many car doors did they get to close, other details in the environment we might have missed.

Ubisoft has this horrible way of announcing games way to long in advance before they actually have anything solid to show. Watch dogs did this, The division is doing this, and this year they showed Rainbow Six Siege in early pre alpha stages. The division still has over a year and a half of development left considering they don't delay the game again. Whats the purpose of doing this behind closed doors when the people who will be being said game are not behind those doors. Put your cards out on the table with the public Ubisoft when you actually have something substantial not just a "vertical slice".

Geez let's just put all the games I'm interested in behind closed doors: Witcher 3, Bloodborne, and now this.

I would have really enjoyed seeing the gameplay without the badly scripted voice acting. What were they thinking with that, anyways? It worked fine last time because no one was playing on stage. This year, someone was on stage playing and by doing so the voice acting was painfully obvious. Why did they do that? Ugh, my head hurts...

My #1 anticipated game so far. I'm curious how changes like creating an outpost affects everyone else's game. I wonder how this'll work in the long run

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think it changes other players' "worlds". There pvp areas - other areas don't feature any pvp ever.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yes it was interesting how on the stage demo when asked about that, he specifically said it's an online game, but then as you say he also stated it can be played without ever interacting with other players.

So, it sounds like whether or not you play with others, it will need to be always online.
