E3 2014: Dragon Age: Inquisition Offers 40 "Major Endings"

It's also got more romance options than either of the first two Dragon Age games.

Whether fairly or unfairly, BioWare is often criticized for what's perceived as a limited range of endings for Mass Effect 3. Right now, it sounds as if that's unlikely to be a problem for BioWare's next game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, which will offer 40 endings and more romance options than its predecessors.

Responding to a question about multiple endings, Inquisition producer Cameron Lee said on Twitter (via Gameranx), "40 major endings with additional variations." The nature of these variations, and exactly how different the endings will be from each other, was not explained, but it sounds promising at this stage.

Separately, the number of romance options available to players has also been addressed. Creative director Mike Laidlaw was quoted as saying Inquisition features "more romances than any previous BioWare game." However, he has since clarified that he was only referring to Dragon Age games. A specific number wasn't provided, but it does provide series fans with some sense of what to expect. According to the unofficial Dragon Age wiki, Dragon Age: Origins had four romance options, while Dragon Age II had five (counting the game's DLC).

Ahead of its release in October, Inquisition has received a positive response for its E3 showing this week. Be sure to check out the new trailer that debuted on Monday and read our impressions of the game for more.

More like 40 interchangeable ending slides. I said the same thing for Mass Effect 3 extended cut and I was right too. Still, I won't give up on Bioware yet. It's the journey before the end that matters.

Mass Effect wasn't a bad game. With the first and second one being so great, everyone expected an amazing ending, which is almost impossible to live up to. Sure, the end bothered me too ,and I always think of the ending as the Indoctrination theory on youtube.

My point is that a game is not all about it's ending.

They could have done alot better.Rumor is Hudson and Walters went off and excluded the rest of the ME team and came up with the endings on their own.

It looks like people still haven't gotten over the mess made by dragon age 2 and mass effect 3 it's sad really opinions though the sad thing is that they are so mad about the past that they aren't willing to give this one a chance and that's the sad part especially if it proves you wrong . By that's life. I for one am excited for this !!!!!

I'd actually prefer just one spectacular ending than 40 mediocre ones. No there's going to be all of that canon ending nonsense. Bioware is most likely gun shy about creating a single definitive ending, and went with the shotgun approach. The ending will be the result of player consequence. If you don't like the ending you get, then it will be your own damn fault for playing the way you did.

I thought they were onto to something with the multiple beginnings to DAO, and would rather see a reappearance of that. Imagine 40 origin stories all funneling to the same epic climax.

"Don't believe his lies" is a perfect quote that's appropriate here, especially after Mass Effect 3 ending. I do wonder..how many colors of that ending will we have?

Kidding aside, 40 variations of your decisions that will decide your ending (I reckon) not 40 full endings is what they are trying to say.

It's not like people have the time to finish the game 40 times. A few endings is cool, but 40 seems overkill.

They better not make Leliana cheat on the Warden commander.. Morrigan too I guess...

I wonder what would happen to my import.. My warden managed to romance both Leliana and Morrigan till the end(No mods were used). Both of them profess their loves to the Warden till the end, Morrigan more so in the Witch hunt.. Will either one make it through to Inquisition or both of them will make it through.. Yes, I'm still hung up on Origin's Warden.. DA:O/A was one of the best experience in rpg history..

It would be interesting for a prince to make an appearance.. A child between Alistair and Anora/Warden or Warden and Anora.. It has been 10 years..

Don't expect a resumption of past romances involving the warden with their DAO Li and Hawke with their DA2 Li.

Cameos are most likely what we'll see of the warden and Hawke.

So any cheating claims are irrelevant.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I understand your point sir, personally at first I like ME3 until the ending for all the reasons you stated before, however they did realize the error of their ways and went back and fixed it with DLC. Of course that should have been been done before launch but this is a new game and has very little chance of falling into the same traps that ME3 did. The main trap that this game avoids is the continuation of it's story through the same protagonist. One of the things that made ME3's ending so difficult to swallow was the fact that we (for the most part) had all familiar faces and a protagonist you couldn't help but fall in love with, making it infinitely more difficult for fans to let go.

In the end ME3 was their story, and yes I feel they should have lived up to their promise, took a little more time and gave us the endings they promised, ranging from the happy to the morbid (at least they got the morbid down pack) but it is clear for all to see that Bioware worked their butts off trying to pull itself back into the good graces of it's fans. This game has had more incubation time then DAO and DA2. In one of the interviews, Mike Laidlaw himself said that they started work on this game immediately after they shipped DAO. For all of it's faults DA2 was a good game (story wise) but it had easily fixable problems (party customization and repetitive environments). They had said earlier in an interview to not judge the game on their words, but on what they are showing you and from what I've seen they've addressed the issues of DA2 in spades for this game.

Not only can you customize party members, but you can craft weapons and armor now. The environments are huge and expansive, each region dwarfing all of DA2 put together and in this demo The Hinterlands are bigger than of of DAO put together. You've got the biggest cast of characters they've ever put together in one party... in short, is it so hard to believe that they could actually have 40 major different endings, especially since like they've said time and time again, the DA franchise is more about a world and it's time than a single character. ME3 could not make the same claim.

Bioware started on Exalted March, not DAI.

We haven't been told what Exalted March would have been like, most likely Hawke was the protagonist.

Bioware decided to dump the march and do DAI, although they probably used alot of the march stuff they had developed to get a jump start on DAI.

Also don't forget that it eventually came out the the A B C ending of ME3 was solely the work and thought of Casey Hudson, Director of the whole thing. Not joking, people that worked on the game came out and said so. So unless Mr. Hudson is working on this too, I wouldn't worry too much.

True that.

I am so tired of a few fans saying they wanted something different and DA2 was it.

They're tired of the hero gathers the group and saves the world type of story. So they say.

A game where the hero goes through a bunch of stuff that in the end doesn't matter because it all comes to naught isn't my idea of a successful story, so we're back to a DAO type of story where a hero has to save the world yet again.

I guess the DA2 fans won't like it, but it is what I think most DA fans want.

My concern is that, while multiple endings are fine in and of themselves, as long as Bioware doesn't skimp on the rest of the game and makes sure everything is polished. Good story, well designed combat, and well written characters are more important than gimmicks or a plethora of endings. Just my 2 cents worth.

3~6 sensible endings are more than enough. We've heard similar thing about ME3. We got only three controversial endings at the end with not enough closure and explanation.

Gaidert said months ago that romances would not be dlc only.A fan who wanted Bioware to stop doing romances requested that romances be dlc only and Gaider said no. That was on the BSN.

shrugs.

Romances aren't mandatory .People who don't like them don't have to do them. And since they will be a lot harder to trigger, virtually impossible to accidently trigger they should be easy to avoid.

What 40 endings mean is there will be a lot of points where a decision could mean you don't get the best ending.

Ok, I threw in my joke response earlier, now the real one.

It doesn't matter how many endings there are. Mass Effect had one ending, and it was fantastic. Dragon Age Origins had one ending with several variances... Mass Effect 2 didn't really have multiple endings so much as a dynamic and variable climax...

One ending is fine; just make it make sense in the context of the story told. Don't spend 90 hours building to a Mass Effect conclusion and give us Deus Ex when it runs completely contrary to the story form and themes you've given us for three games!

The best story game I've ever played is Walking Dead; there was one ending, and was build heavily on illusionary choice, but it was a fantastic experience the whole way. ME3 threw everything away and went with an ending utterly inappropriate to the story. That's the point.

40 endings or 400, if maintaining some level of coherence and theme isn't a priority, it will not matter.

@dropkickcleary Wrong.

Playing through ME1 again, I had an AI character say "organics will always seek to destroy or control synthetics", so really, the ending to ME3 does NOT run contrary to the rest of the series.

And really, the ME3 ending was thematically built up and foreshadowed all throughout the game. Javik foreshadows the damn thing.

The problem is that the fans think its all about unifying the galaxy and overcoming the impossible. Its not. Its about the conflicts and consequences of controlling anothers destiny to further your goals.

The endings are a choice between utter destruction, complete enslavement, or forced mutual assimilation. It STILL conflicts with your theme.
