E3 2014: Bloodborne Is Coming to PS4 Straight From the Minds of Dark Souls

From Software announces their next ultra-difficult game.

Bloodborne! Sorry for the exclamation point, but it's hard to talk about a new game developed by From Software without screaming with delight. We've finally see the official reveal of Project Beast, a game who we first glimpsed a couple months ago when it was leaked. But now we know the name, and that it is, in fact, real. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, who was the creative director of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, Bloodborne is his next project that is sure to make me squirm and scream and cheer with joy.

Unfortunately, there's no information on what to expect because the trailer was all CG. But it is coming out next year, so prepare to die.

Another PS4 exclusive! Well, at least this isn't a good game, so the situation is not so bad.

UPDATE 2.45PM BST: Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has previewed Bloodborne and shared new details (collected on<< LINK REMOVED >>).

The article reportedly said developer From Software was targeting a spring 2015 release for the game. It's not clear if this is a Japanese date or one for the wider world.

From Software apparently started working on the game after finishing Dark Souls expansion Artorias of the Abyss (a different team took on Dark Souls 2), building a new world and story for the game. They're targeting 1080p30 for the game, it's said.

There will be online play of some kind and it will involve "discovering" together. Souls has taken a unique approach to multiplayer since Demon's Souls; I'm confident director Hidetaka Miyazaki has something up his sleeve.

There's talk of combat being more strategical and of it being a life or death struggle, but this all sounds fairly familiar to what Souls does already. Oh, and there will be guns.

The announcement and trailer was certainly intriguing, but it's a bit hard to judge exactly what kind of game this will be. Need some more information on this one.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Take this studio's track record. They've made horrible games with Demon Souls and the Dark Souls series.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> That is just stupid, if you were a fan of the series since Demon's why would it be an issue for you that the game is a PS4 exclusive? That makes no sense. It will be optimized for the PS4 so it will look great. It could look better on PC, but other than that, it wouldn't be a world of difference.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i'm a fan of the series, but not enough of a fan to dump 500 dollars to play it. it's an incentive to buy a PS4, but not enough for me.

each generation you gotta make a choice of what you'll invest on, and i chose a PC because on the long run, it's cheaper and more accessible for me, software-wise. had i invested on a gaming PC before buying a PS3, chances are i wouldn't have ever played demon's.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> when i bought a PS3, i didn't use my PC for gaming much. it was mostly to access the gen's multiplats (and the last guardian and MGS4) than anything else. demon's souls was a really nice bonus i got to pick along the way. nowadays, i can't justify a PS4, because sony's first party still doesn't interest me, and 90% of third party games i want will end up on PC. i'll lose some cool games, but it's not worth a whole system for me

I had Dark souls around a year ago, got stuck and quit playing... But when it came out free on Xbox live the other day I had another go and completed it last night. The games are hard yes, but the thing I liked is that they're not stupid in their difficulty, if I die 95% of the time it is because I made a mistake, not because of a poor game design. And once I got past about half way I actually found it rather easy, completing most of the bosses on my first try. These games are all about exploring, learning, adapting and discovering which I LOVE, it's a huge change from having it all served on a plate so I can breeze through it with ease and have very little replay value. These games take patience, and I've discovered many of my friends have a giant lack of this having heard them screaming "F*** THIS GAME" over the microphone for the last week :P

<< LINK REMOVED >> Back in the NES days almost every game was difficult. Then again most games took about 30 minutes to beat back then so they had to make them difficult without cheat codes. C'est la vie. I like the games today, but most of them are ridiculously easy. I always push difficulty up to maximum when I can.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think you're the first one who's ever used the word steampunk and trash together. What a ridiculous hatred of a niche genre that offers a lot of originality and untapped possibility. I truly feel bad for you. I'm sure you're just saying this because you have some ridiculous issue with the Order 1886, even though you've never played it. It's still a ridiculous thing to say. There have been some very good steampunk games, books, and movies. Stop limiting yourself.

Got to get a PS4 soon. With Bloodborne, The Order, Grim fandango, Uncharted 4 and LBP3 to play with my daughter, it has the better upcoming exclusives for me.

The only exclusive on my Xbox I'm looking forward to is quantum break, and maybe Sunset overdrive but that looks like it could get boring pretty quickly.

Its like Dead island 2 and Sunset ovrdrive have something in common besides zombies; comedy, i guess is where you go when things become stale on the dramatic side of things, not that its a bad thing or anything it just seems like we get treated to quite a few me toos. Speaking of which; will they ever make another zombie revenge game?

I liked DS but I just don't see how they make any money alienating the majority of gamers by making their games too difficult and unforgiving. Besides myself I only have one friend that's played any DS game. Most ppl I talk to say they were turned off by the constant dying.

@lithus I know a lot of people who enjoyed Dark Souls. Dark Souls was honestly easier than Demon's Souls. They weren't THAT hard. I think you have too many friends who love the FPS. Besides there are plenty of gamers who enjoy a challenge. I always play games on the hardest level of difficulty. Or at least almost always. I hate not being able to increase difficulty on games that are far too easy. Assassin's Creed and GTA V need a difficulty setting for instance. Love the games, but WAY too easy. These games require patience more than anything. Difficult? Not really. You just can't run through the game like you can for most games these days.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Difficulty is what draws people to it. If it weren't difficult then it would be boring. The only people they're alienating are casual gamers, and casual gamers have plenty of other games to choose from.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think they just want to create a game that's different than most hack'n'slash games, since a lot of them rely on the game telling them to do this or do that and stuff. The DS series doesn't tell you anything but makes you discover it yourself (except on the controls).

And it's the same to their death mechanism, other games just let you respawn at the nearest checkpoint so your death doesn't mean anything and isn't painful, but in DS you have to get your souls as carefully as you can when you die cause if you lose it...

The game is built so that you can train yourself and not the game training you, but most people misinterpret this as "hard difficulty".

Finally someone on GS that doesn't go on the warpath when they disagree! Thank you. Im glad there are games like DS because I like diversity. It's not exactly for me but I like to take my licks once in a while.

I just wish they would tone down the "you must die a lot to play" mechanic. At least give me some feeling that I have a chance to make it across one level. Ppl say this is more realistic but last I checked you only get to die once in real life ;)

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you're having a hard time playing the game summon signs are always there to help you. Though I do not recommend summoning someone cause it removes the feeling of achievement on defeating a boss. Only do it when you're really desperate (like fighting darklurker on melee but you can't summon on his fight though)

It's kind of interesting that there is a market for these highly difficult fantasy games, but yet the same doesn't seem to work with shooters. I would love to see a difficult shooter that emphasizes things like accuracy, careful movement, etc.

My best guess for why would be multiplayer. Shooters are pretty much all about multiplayer, and I guess in that area people want fast wild action all the time. Man, I really miss the old singleplayer tactical campaigns of games like the original Rainbow Six titles.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's not the difficulty that makes it amazing. The difficulty is a side effect of well-crafted and highly tuned game design with significant depth.
