If you were expecting a bunch of concrete details on Mass Effect 4 at E3 2014, well, you're out of luck.

If you wanted some vague information, however, well, you're quids in! BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson spoke via a lavishly produced video at EA's E3 2014 press conference to confirm that the new Mass Effect would feature entirely new characters, set in a new region of the universe.

Some conceptual prototype footage showed a series of brief glimpses into the new part of the universe, with the environments appearing war torn--a stark contrast from many of the clean, angular corridors from the original trilogy.

Hudson also reiterated that BioWare Montreal was designing Mass Effect 4, whereas the Edmonton studio was creating the entirely new IP.

Creating an entirely new universe also gives the team a "chance to have a clean sheet of design to start at the most fundamental set of principles you can have," said BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn.

Hudson added that the new IP was being designed to tell "contemporary stories," whatever that could mean.

<< LINK REMOVED >> the other day I read that it was "halfway done", they are probably just wary about releasing much due to the HUGE STORM OF HATE they got about the ending of ME3

So the new IP will be like Mass Effect 2? A bunch of side stories that don't have anything to do with the overarching plot

<< LINK REMOVED >> Anything like Mass Effect 2 means it's going to be something like the best game ever made, so win.

Eh. I was hoping for something more concrete regarding ME4. The "new settings" bit was essentially a given, considering how a sequel to ME3 in the same part of the galaxy is all but impossible unless they canonize one ending.

Looking forward to the new IP, though. BioWare tends to excel with new content; it's their sequels that tend to stumble a little.

I'm confused. Mass Effect 4 and the new IP are two different things right? The way this article switches back and forth between them in the same breath makes it sound like Mass Effect 4 is the new IP.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I thought it was made quite clear with this sentence "BioWare Montreal was designing Mass Effect 4, whereas the Edmonton studio was creating the entirely new IP", where two studios are making two different games.

I don't know what "contemporary stories" means, but it might be good. I'm more interested in fantasy/sci-fi settings, but lots of people dig modern contemporary settings, if that's what they meant with contemporary.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well since the article doesn't mention the new IP before that sentence, expect for in the headline, it could be interpreted as one studio designing the game and the other implementing it.

@Hurvl @SingletreeAve You're right, it is quite clear: Montreal did the multiplayer for ME3, so ME4 will definitely be on the straight shooty, buggy side if ME3's multiplayer is any indication. Edmonton is the classic Bioware we know (well, that's where the classic studio is based), so that likely will be a new RPG.

Unfortunately, that line about having a "clean sheet" to work with is not very encouraging. All that does is tell me EA doesn't want the new ME game to be connected to the old one. They want their version based on what they believe will sell. It's essentially the same thing they did with Old Republic where that game basically kills off all the most endearing characters from KotoR and substitutes their own.

This was literally the only thing I was looking forward to on E3.

So many bland games.
