If you were expecting a bunch of concrete details on Mass Effect 4 at E3 2014, well, you're out of luck.

If you wanted some vague information, however, well, you're quids in! BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson spoke via a lavishly produced video at EA's E3 2014 press conference to confirm that the new Mass Effect would feature entirely new characters, set in a new region of the universe.

Some conceptual prototype footage showed a series of brief glimpses into the new part of the universe, with the environments appearing war torn--a stark contrast from many of the clean, angular corridors from the original trilogy.

Hudson also reiterated that BioWare Montreal was designing Mass Effect 4, whereas the Edmonton studio was creating the entirely new IP.

Creating an entirely new universe also gives the team a "chance to have a clean sheet of design to start at the most fundamental set of principles you can have," said BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn.

Hudson added that the new IP was being designed to tell "contemporary stories," whatever that could mean.

I really don't understand how they follow Mass Effect 3 up with something that pleases everyone. Seems like depending on the ending you picked in ME3 (which wasn't immediately impactful, but there's some extremely diverse aftermath to it) the world and narrative should be COMPLETELY different, doesn't it?

<< LINK REMOVED >> There's several options.

1. Cannon ending picked. Bioware picks an ending and forces everyone to use it. Based on the couple second "secret" cutscene it's probably the Destroy ending.

2. They were very specific about how this is a "different" part of the universe with COMPLETELY new characters. Its essentially a reboot in a way. This may be a way of completely ignoring the final player decision of 3.They could simply say "The changes only affected the parts of the universe near the relays. This game is set outside of that zone!"

I am guessing its a combination of the two. I feel like there will be no save import because they are making it clear that everything about this game is seperate.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Not sure. They talked in that video about "moving forward". I think fans want a follow up, something set down the line. Because if it runs co-currently with the timeline of the original 3, then it's very limited in both narrative and scope just off the bat. Can't tackle the Reapers again, that's Shepherd's fight. And that's the single biggest threat in the ME world, I can't imagine them going beyond that. Maybe there's another extinction level event out there, but then that would be repetitive and seemingly uninspired. I question the need for a Mass Effect 4, but maybe they'll surprise me with something worthwhile.

Wow...can't believe how many haters there still are of one of the best sci-fi games EVER made. The ending was fine and when they extended it, it got even better. Get over yourselves and enjoy what these guys created. Had a blast playing it and I'm sure I will love whatever comes next...

<< LINK REMOVED >> I was so devastatingly disappointed with the ending, and no not because shepherd died. The endning made no sense to me, and ALL your choices had 0 effect on the ending, like literally ZERO effect.. I never picked up ME3 again like I did with the other games ;(. (it really makes me more sad than mad)..

BUT still I had fun playing it, and I didn't think it was a waste of money.

@Etagloc @Ferrari3 Your choices DID matter with the Extended Cut. Not to the degree they promised though. The game was utterly rushed.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The original ending wasn't, but the extended cut was good. It cleaned up a lot of loose threads that were there before and put things into much better perspective. It's a shame that the original ending required such a clean up job, but at least they were willing to admit to being wrong and attempting to fix it and please their fans. An 11/10 game with 5/10 ending? Good enough.

@LegendInMyMind @leikeylosh @Ferrari3 hahahaha 11/10? No. Me 1 and 2 where 11 not ME3. Id give it a solid 9. A loot of dialog options were missing. You just watch sheperd do his own thing and talk. Me has always been about Choices and dialogue. This felt like i was a back seat for most of the game.

And you know why ending was so terrible and out of place? Cause Casey Hudson and the other writer worked on it themselves not showing it to the rest of the staff. And we got a piss poor ending.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe the absolute final decision didn't change the visual outcome much, but my choices along the way still mattered. I wiped out the Geth because I didn't have enough pull with the Quarians to save them both. I also let Kelly Chambers get assassinated. Oops.

I felt pretty bad about wiping out the Geth, but I was determined to stick by my choices for the first play through. I didn't need a drastically changing ending to define the story for me.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I saved the Geth. Then realized that was irrelevant because if I wanted to do the logical thing and kill the reapers they were going to die anyways. I brokered Edi and Joker's relationship, but hey Edi is going to get destroyed too, sorry. This was the problem with the choices. If you think about it they completely undo a lot of what you did. "Oh you saved person X? Yeah they died anyways in the end, sorry."

I'll try to describe it the best way I can. Imagine if as you played this painting took form. Every decision you made affected the painting. Before the finale of 3 you have this huge painting representing all the decisions you made. Then....The finale comes. You have three choices. You can take a bucket of blue, red, or green paint and dump it all over your painting. No matter which color you choose it doesn't change the fact that your painting is now ruined and only a few parts of the painting were spared from the paint.

This is the inherent problem with the endings. From the minute you start ME1 your choices start branching out. Imagine it a huge tree. By the finale of ME3 everyone's "tree" looks wildly different because there were countless decision points throughout the 3 games. Then at the end it does a complete 180 and forces everyone's tree to go through one of three branches (Red, Blue, or Green). It felt so strange considering what was promised before 2 and 3 were even released.

@Dexyu @Ferrari3 There were some fair qualms about the ENDING of Mass Effect 3 (pre-extended cut), but the majority of that game was an 11/10. Don't deny that you were absolutely loving it until the nonsensical ORIGINAL ending. Extended cut put things into better perspective and made it much more satisfying.

At first i had amazement goggles finally the trilogy ends so i didn't notice all cheap stuff until i did a second replay. Still ,main missions were well done and enjoyable. Hated the side mission they just cut the action out of it completely. Citadel dlc did some amazing work that was awesome. But i modded my ending so i didn't have to talk to a shity star child that came out of Someone's pore imagination ass. And as for Next Mass effect i will probably drop my money once more. Cuse i love that universe exploration.

Why did they even bother to create this video? I creates no interest nor teases at anything. It just a few people saying "yeah, we are working on another ME game" like we didn't know that already.

Bioware, I hope you are asking the right fans. One key gameplay component is to enable players with chioce, meaningful choice that impact the flow of the game and character interactions. ME 3 took that away. New places and new characters will matter little if the expactaion of deep meaningful story with meaningful choice will not be met. Focusing only on the next gen consoles technology could be a mistke. Listen to the players, to the fans and to the gameplay, please.

Here's a thought as well, BioWare. Stop oversexualizing female characters. Watching how Ashley went from Marine in ME1 to bimbo in ME3 was awful. Watching how female armor went from heavy and practical to swimwear and high-heels was also awful.

@franky111 Okay, now you're just complaining to complain. There is no such thing as heavy and practical, since for a soldier that is NOT practical. And in ME1, almost every bit of armor was formfitting, especially the N7 armor. They became more formfitting as time went on because the graphics improved.

Hell, in our own world they're still finding ways to make armor less bulkier and more formfitting. That doesn't mean they're oversexualizing people, that means they're trying to increase effectiveness in battle while retaining a reasonable level of protection. Hell, the armor through all three games fit MaleShep like a glove, I don't see people complaining about that.

Remember all of the bold-face lies Casey Hudson told everyone throughout the months leading up to ME3's release, and even post release.

Take everything that man says with a huge grain of salt.

You know, "new places to go" isn't exactly a hook to get me interested in the game. ME2 had different places from ME1 and ME3 had different places too. Saying "our next game has different places" is a bit like saying "our next game is going to have graphics!"

Personally, what I want from the next ME game is for the main character to feel more like my character rather than a character whose appearance I decided. I want to create Volus, Krogan, Asari and Turian characters. I'd like it if my character's relationships were more important; unlike in ME1 and 2, I want my character to be able to interact with their partner instead of the relationship stopping dead after the first kiss. I'd like them to be able to get married and have a fancy apartment on the Citadel.

Just my thoughts. Feel free to disagree.
