If you were expecting a bunch of concrete details on Mass Effect 4 at E3 2014, well, you're out of luck.

If you wanted some vague information, however, well, you're quids in! BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson spoke via a lavishly produced video at EA's E3 2014 press conference to confirm that the new Mass Effect would feature entirely new characters, set in a new region of the universe.

Some conceptual prototype footage showed a series of brief glimpses into the new part of the universe, with the environments appearing war torn--a stark contrast from many of the clean, angular corridors from the original trilogy.

Hudson also reiterated that BioWare Montreal was designing Mass Effect 4, whereas the Edmonton studio was creating the entirely new IP.

Creating an entirely new universe also gives the team a "chance to have a clean sheet of design to start at the most fundamental set of principles you can have," said BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn.

Hudson added that the new IP was being designed to tell "contemporary stories," whatever that could mean.

I need my ME fix... Its been 4 years too long

Avatar image for punksterdaddy

Let's be positive.

They can't make another lack-luster ending like the one in ME3, so it can only get better... Right?

In my opinion, I wont say whether or not I will buy the game until I see what Bioware is actually working on. They have been getting a lot of complaints due to ME3'S endings, which I thought didn't take away from the game that much, and DA2, which I thought it was still a good game but still had a major lack of open world maps and a lack of variety when it came to settings.

Why say 'I am so mad, I wont be buying the game because of ME3 and DA2' when you haven't even seen anything really substantial from Bioware to either confirm or disprove your theories?

I say we all stop speculating about ME4 and wait until we get an official release of information from Bioware, then we can make up our minds.

@kboelz fair argument. i'm cautiously optimistic based on what we've been shown so far for both franchises, but i refuse to throw money away on a preorder for the exact same reason you stated- "we just haven't seen enough", and we probably won't until the feedback and reviews start pouring in closer to their release dates. i feel like i got burned twice with da2 and me3, so they're going to have to win me back first.

new ip better be fantasy based or you wont get my money-peace:)

well that was a lot of nothing...Im exited alright...

I hope the world isn't like medium to large-sized corridors like previous ME games. I hope it's truly an open vast world that we currently see in DA: Inquisition and Witcher 3.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well that sure seems to be the trend this year.

Avatar image for downloadthefile

I hope they do some kind of modern setting RPG. I dunno what that'd look like, but it seems like there must be something you could do with the present/recent past/near future in RPG form.

They will nail this "new IP" perfectly. It will be an unstoppable force at retail. Everyone will love it.

And then they will force change on its sequel, or get too eager to display the conclusion and butcher the sequel's ending, or someone will be lazy and cite artistic expression as a weak excuse for making content so effing horrible.

Avatar image for Drkr_Zen

<< LINK REMOVED >> This. We've seen it with both Mass Effect and Dragon Age so far.

Avatar image for johngault5

I hope they bring back Krogan, Turien, Asari and Salarian. They are the heart and soul of the series. Take them away and it's not Mass Effect.

Avatar image for ninboxstation

they need to give ME4 a similar cult OST they gave ME1 ...

(imo, give ME4 the Main story and OST of ME1 and the side Character (quest) depth of ME2.. and the action/exlposions of ME3...)

This will be Dragon Age 2 all over again.

Cant wait.

Avatar image for klusik

Please what does the "IP" mean? :-)

Avatar image for daikkenaurora12

<< LINK REMOVED >> "Intellectual Property" I believe

Avatar image for klusik

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I see! Thanks ;)

Avatar image for deepurple2004

<< LINK REMOVED >> brand new game

Avatar image for klusik

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Oh... thanks ;)

Avatar image for g1rldraco7

This is good news to me, now to pray that no DLC is made for these games.

Avatar image for punksterdaddy

Optimism is always nice... Reality sucks though. ;)

Avatar image for vadagar1

oh and no more DLC that we know you cut from the original game

btw ... I did not buy your ME1,2,3 DLC but behold I have them ;)

just did not think it was fair to get robbed <3

Avatar image for AuronAXE

Hmm, well I loved the first Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 3 was actually pretty good minus the ending. In Dragon Age's case the first one was amazing and the sequel a turd, ME2 was pretty bad as well. I really really hope we can see the true return of Bioware quality like the old days, but, as hip game devs like to put it, "redefined for the next generation".

It's exciting to see what they're doing post the Mass Effect 3 ending outcry. I can't wait to see what this team does with the direction of 'new characters and new stories'. And shoot, that music always gets me emotional.

Avatar image for Dedatox

I wonder what plot blowing day 1 DLC and bad plot holes they are going to create this time.

Avatar image for kittytheshegeek

I am so stoked for this!!! I can't wait to see more :D

Avatar image for Kraken422

Yay new IP

Avatar image for nothingformoney

Just don't screw this one

Avatar image for Jasurim

I'm looking forward to the new IP the most I think, hopefully it's something fun.

Avatar image for juliamorales

Ugh I wish they would release more info and at least screencaps. This is my favorite series, maybe I'm lame because I actually LIKED Mass Effect 3 but I'm really glad they're continuing the universe.

Avatar image for kittytheshegeek

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's my favourite series too. Honestly, the ending(s) was a little disappointing, but I didn't hate it as much as other people seem to... and I am SUPER stoked for the next one xD

Avatar image for Kraken422

<< LINK REMOVED >> Mass Effect 3 was a great game it just had a disappointing ending. Excluding the ending it's possibly the greatest game I've ever played.

Avatar image for johngault5

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Salarians used to eat flies.

Great game. i always end the game when Anderson says I'm proud of you and dies. Looking out the window into the universe was a perfect ending.

Avatar image for Dedatox

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Don't forget the day 1 DLC that had a Prothean playable character.

Avatar image for Toxic-Seahorse

Is it just me or are they using a song from Sim City as the background music at the beginning?

Avatar image for armalisniper

<< LINK REMOVED >> No I believe it is the 'New World' theme from Mass Effect 2 and then the 'Vigil' theme from Mass Effect 1.

Avatar image for bourne714

As much as EA is known for rushing out known IPs to make a quick buck, I'm kind of glad they didn't show anything. If EA was trying to MILK Mass Effect we would have at least seen some kind of BS gameplay. Hopefully they know that there a lot of passionate gamers when it comes to ME, and that we are willing to wait. The same thing can be said for Mirror's Edge.

Avatar image for ticcore

<< LINK REMOVED >> I work in marketing... and you couldn't be more wrong. The best way to get people to talk about your item is to give them peanuts and speculate. EA is giving very little and will continue to give little... maybe a trailer here and there but you won't get much until the game comes out. That is also a CYA move because I guarantee you there will be no quotes from Casey Hudson that EA hasn't combed over a million times after the A,B,C comment for ME3.

Avatar image for sepir

Firstly, Can't wait for the new ME. It is one of my favourite IP's.

Secondly, can gamespot put a link to a video that allows buffering? I wouldn't have been able to watch this with all the stopping if it wasn't early in the morning here in Perth.

Avatar image for csward

Unimpressive trailer, but the game looks to be very early in development. Nothing to see here, sadly.

Avatar image for GhoX

I hope their new IP is similar to Alpha Protocol, which had excellent ideas but poor polish.

Avatar image for deactivated-58f15a6c86598

Even though Shepard was a badass, I think its cool that they are exploring new ideas. Hopefully they can create a trilogy equal to or better than the original.
