E3 2011: Sony announces $499 Resistance 3D TV bundle

New hardware/software bundle shown; 24-inch PlayStation-branded 3D display, pair of 3D glasses, HDMI cable, and copy of Resistance 3 included; $150 Doomsday edition also announced.

LOS ANGELES--Today at Sony's 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing, the technology giant announced its latest effort in the gamer-fueled 3D push.

A first look at Sony's just-announced 3D TV.
A first look at Sony's just-announced 3D TV.

Due out sometime this holiday season, the new $499 SKU includes a 24-inch PlayStation-branded 3D display, a pair of 3D glasses, an HDMI cable, and a copy of Insomniac's September-dated Resistance 3. Glasses will be available a la carte for $69.99.

Of note, Sony's Jack Tretton said the system will allow two players to see two entirely different things on the same screen, effectively changing split-screen multiplayer as gamers know it.

In addition to announcing the new 3D TV, Sony used its media briefing today to show off a new Resistance 3 bundle. Dubbed the "Doomsday" edition, this $150 bundle will include a Sharpshooter peripheral, a PlayStation Move motion controller, navigation controller, PlayStation Eye camera, and a copy of the game.

For more on the new 3D TV and the Doomsday bundles, check out Sony's description of the new bundles on the PlayStation Blog.

I want this already, I bought my Sharp 19" when the PS3 launched so i could at least play games in 1080i or watch movies in 1080i. It was the best HDTV for the money at the time, although it didn't support full 1080p. I've never felt the need for the living room HDTV since i play games mostly in my bedroom. We have HDTV's in all the rooms of our house now, but i still prefer playing games via bedroom where my Mac is as well, so this will actually be a step up for me going to at least 24" for gaming. I've played PS3 on my friends 42" Toshiba HDTV, can't tell any difference, just bigger screen big whoop.

@gunnergod13 Is that even possible, mate?! Or may be, I am just being normal. As every new technology makes us think, "HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?!?!?!" May be, its one of those technologies. And if they do succeed, I'd love to buy one. But there's only one thing that messes it up. 24" actually is small as compared to what we feast our eyes on these days. Our appetite has grown. They should give us at least 36". But then again. Its the first strike. With its success, it will open up path to larger screens. They might eventually come out with a 50" then. Who knows. :D So, guys, please stop complaining. Though you are right, still stop complaining. Buy the TV. Make it successful, so that they will think of upgrading the technology further. And then you will enjoy your most wanted seriously huge screens. :D Good luck!

Not a bad idea, I bought a Samsung 26" 720P tv a few years back (for about $250 more than this tv... now my tv is like $350 haha), so I don't think I'll be picking this up. But I still think it is a fairly good idea for them to throw together a package like this, I'll probably still wait and pick up a new tv in like 4 years, which will be 10 years since I bought my tv.

Sounds very cool and at the ones who say 24" isn't that big for a screen, as a PC gamer aswell I know that 24" is the 'sweet spot' for a 1080p display so a clever move by Sony =) I'm starting to like 3D more and more as more things support/use it, just had a slow start. That move bundle sounds good too, not too expensive for a bundle like that, looking forward.

@monson21502 Most PS3 titles are releasing with 3d in the future so sony didn't make 3d it's central point in 2011 conference because about all games come with a 3d option. It's not a trick from sony, it's a deal, you either take it or leave it. MS conference was mostly about kinect, and imo that's a trick to force the consumer to buy kinect as little non-kinect/core games were anounced.

24" bit on the small side! Don't get me wrong that is a okay price for a 3D screen, but I'm hardly going to want to replace my 40" LCD with it! Might be good for playing in the kitchen or on the John ;)

buying this will be like buying res3 for 500 bucks... which will be a better deal then what i paid for my 60 gig ps3.. least res3 wont be broke in less then 2 years.... reason i say this is because sony wont support 3d long enuff for this bundle to be worth your cash... if u want to watch 3d movies buy a big 3dtv next year when u get ur taxes.. just look at the current selection of 3d gaming on ps3.. whats good since last year when 3d hype was bigger then this year??? dont fall for sony`s tricks to get rich quik.. call me a fanboy all u want im just trying to warn you all....

@GunGriffin where did you acquire the specs for the t.v. I don't recall them talking about resolution or response time just that it's HD and 3D 24 inch screen.

Yeah a 24 inch 3D LED 720P HDTV, with 1 HDMI port, and 1 Composite port and no headphone jack, or BT features, or even w ethernet port/USB for firmware updateing, or possable ways to fix any form of picture problem, it's also going to lack any sort of Apps, or for that matter any sort of good spec, from what I understand it's going to use G3 Sony HDTV tech, which means it will fallow the same lines as most of Sony's current offerings and sit at a slow 8ms B/W response time, and on top of that from people who got a look at it the screen has a gray response issue gaysing massive gray bluring when 3D is enabled on the screen but for some reason it only happens with 3D on, not off. Not that impressive.

24" for $500 is alot of money... you can buy a 24" tv for waaaaaaay cheaper than this... this this is gonna be super small, hand held small screen... people are better off saver for a longer period of time & investing in a larger screen, might take longer to save if your a budget gamer, but it would be well worth it for them in the end...

@Vampiro_HuntT3R what it means is that player one sees his side of the split screen and player 2 sees his side of the screen and they cant see each others so it is like playing on two tvs but still playing on that one tv

"Of note, Sony's Jack Tretton said the system will allow two players to see two entirely different things on the same screen, effectively changing split-screen multiplayer as gamers know it. " REALLY???!?!?! WOW!!! oh yeah thats right. they forgot to mention at less than half the resolution!!! To have true 3D HD playback you have to have a 1080p TV. and then you only 540p. I am not hating on 3d, but I think its a little gimmicky and I would rather see UHD instead of 3D. or the combination of them both. but 3D is reducing the quality of pictures that we just spent 15 years trying to make better.

An active 24" 3D TV for only $500? Look guys I know that the network was a hit to your pocketbook but no reason to stick to the customers and tell them you're doing them a favor.

A new Sony TV, in other words high price for a very mediocre product. If you really want a 3DTV, spend a couple hundred more on a Panasonic ST30.

24"? I still have a standard def TV from the 90's and it's way bigger than 24"! I'd have to agree with @Evo8u; think of all the great games you could get for $500.

$500 is too much, really need to start phasing out 60hz like they are doing with older/fatter lcd's and bring the price to normal on the 120hz. 3d isn't worth the price just like ssd's, though they are the future no doubt.

I wouldn't consider it overpriced, though I don't think it's that much of a deal over other 3D capable monitors of the same size. $70 for extra glasses isn't bad, though I'm expecting price drops in all 3D glasses over the next couple of years, so no big surprise there. If it can double as a PC monitor and still had standard TV inputs I would consider it.

A 24″ 3D TV? Well that's a first. 3D means the screen's refresh rate is VERY high (at least 120Hz if I recall correctly) making this viable for even PC gaming without annoying motion blur. Really awesome for a 1080p display. I'll pick one up if it meets the following conditions : +AV, composite and VGA ports +2ms response time +1000:1 static contrast ratio SONY really needs to get a spec sheet out for the technical guys like me. $500 is still a lot and I won't shell out the cash and replace my current monitor until I can compare them.
