E3 2011: Respawn sci-fi shooter hinted at by EA president

Frank Gibeau drops not-so-subtle clue ex-Infinity Ward heads are working on high-tech FPS that will "compete with Gears and Halo."

LOS ANGELES--In July 2010, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter made a prediction about Respawn Entertainment's first game. He said he believed that the young studio, founded by Infinity Ward cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella, was working on a "Halo-killer" sci-fi shooter for publisher Electronic Arts.

EA and Respawn are likely readying a sci-fi shooter to compete with Halo and Gears of War.
EA and Respawn are likely readying a sci-fi shooter to compete with Halo and Gears of War.

Now, nearly a year later, an EA executive has come close to confirming Pachter's prognostication. Speaking to CVG, EA Games president Frank Gibeau dropped some not-so-subtle hints that Respawn's game will indeed be a sci-fi action title--one he believes will be able to compete with some of the top titles in the genre.

Gibeau discussed EA's plan to alternate Medal of Honor games with Battlefield games in two-year development cycles--meaning the next Medal of Honor should be out in 2012. Then he shifted the subject to where Respawn's game might fit into this schedule.

"Titles like Respawn…we'll sprinkle those in where we see opportunistic gaps, either in a release schedule or in a genre standpoint," he said. "Those typically are more sci-fi oriented shooters, whereas the Medal of Honor and Battlefield brands are obviously more modern military oriented."

He continued, "So it allows us to pick and choose the best of the sci-fi shooters. It allows us to compete with things like Gears and Halo and put them on places in our release calendar where they're not cannibalistic to the core business and that's the essential strategy going forward."

Hopefully it will be a 3rd-person cover-based shooter. Respawn needs to branch away a bit from the FPS genre.

I'd love to see another AAA+ sci-fi shooter. They're one of my favourite type of games, but yeah, an excellent story line is essential for these games. Halo was/is sweet, Gears rocks, Love Killzone(although the story could have been better...i just prefer humans vs aliens i.e Locust & covenant.) Resistance 1 rocked, 2 wasn't so good, 3 so far looks amazing! Respawn(the real IW) could be on to a winner if they take their time to get this right, definetly one to watch!

not really impressed..... Halo and Gears killers thats going to be hard, not just for graphics and gameplay but story..... theyre going after two great stories, if you think about it, its going to be hard just topping that now to ME... Halo got killed after the 3rd game... i mean 10hrs of gameplay weeeaaaaakkkk. and Medal of Honor was just a cheap Battlefield copy and the only reason it did any good was because of the trailer and all the fans that were just disappointed, like me that went back to battlefield as soon as i was done with the gae

@MEDzZ3RO He saw $200 million and thought it was units. Not money. Oops? :P @hardcoreLazors $200 million is not 200 million copies. @pakurtz123 If you think the multiplayer in the BF series and MoH series are the same, you have not played em both... or possibly either.

@Daian No I did not forget G64. It is a cult classic. A game on a niche system. Look at what the schedule for console game releases started to offer post and pre Halo. If Goldeneye had been released and had the same ratio of systems sold to copies sold on the PS2, a different tune we would be singing. But it did not. FPS was huge... on PCs. Before CS there was QuakeWorld. LAN Parties. Before Quake there was Doom. So what? Quake 3 and UT tried to go to consoles, and failed. FPS remained almost solely for PCs. Until Halo showed people how it could be done and done right on consoles. You seem to just dislike Halo and do not want to see what a milestone and it's effect on the market and gaming as a whole. (One could argue it was thanks to Halo2 that the people in charge saw how successful a system like XboxLive was and it's potential which gave rise to PSN and Wii network). While people were playing Halo I was playing other games I consider superior to it, but they are long forgotten in most people's memories and therefore have had no lasting effect. I hope you get my point this time.

@hardcoreLazors Wrong. Goldeneye 007 and Medal Of Honor bought about fps games on consoles. Halo just solidified that with a good control scheme. "Halo Reach sold 200 million units in the US within six day"? No chance. First off, Microsoft haven't even sold anywhere near that amount of 360s, secondly the Mario series total combined sales only just tops that and it's been going strong for years; lastly, I know for a fact the total Halo Reach sales are around the 8-9 million units mark worldwide. You need to check your facts.

@pakurtz123 Humans versus outer space civilizations in both Killzone and Resistance; sounds comparable to your modern day war comparison in both MoH and Battlefield to me. DICE have the benefit of a solid engine up to todays standards (unlike IW with their modded 2005 engine they're still using since CoD 2). DICE are strongest when it comes to multiplatform fps developing and EA already had them on side, it was an obvious choice. Plus, as far as I',m aware DICE are the only people to ever implement their engine, they have the kits to build with it. The two development teams are completely different outside of campaign. Battlefield and Medal Of Honor are far from the same game or franchise unlike the Treyarch/IW Call Of Duty franchise. Medal Of Honor was released in 1997, Battlefield was released in 2002; the games are completely separate. Different settings?, Call Of Duty has been set in World War 2, modern warfare, Vietnam and briefly the Cold War. Battlefield has been set in all those settings as well; Medal Of Honor is the only fps I can think of which is set in Afghanistan. I suppose you're also about to suggest Crytek are doing the same with Crysis and Far Cry as well seeing as they share the same developer, genre and publisher? Ridiculous. To be honest though I don't see what your problem is, is it that the majority of people are saying Battlefield 3 lwill be a lot better then Modern Warfare 3 does?

@raptures330 Once again you're forgetting Goldeneye on N64. Secondly there are such things as computers for noobs (no offense, u're the one that called PC gaming geeky, i'm only keeping the terminology) , they're called Macs ( u know, those really overpriced computers that cost 50% more for the exact same hardware just because it has a pretty Apple label on it :P). Finally, FPS were already being played by the masses, u might remember a little game that went by the name of Counter Strike, everyone was playing it at home or in internet cafes for years and years. Halo is particularly huge in the USA, Counter Strike was huge everywhere. But hey, at least you're not rambling about how Halo or CoD is the best game of all time. OF ALL TIME!!! AND BEYONCE HAD THE BEST VIDEO OF ALL TIME!!! Sorry, just messing around :P.

@MEDzZ3RO Actually no, your Resistance and Killzone example is flawed because: 1. Killzone and Resistance have substantial differences in setting and gameplay. I'm sorry, but from the looks of things, MoH and BF3 have little if any differences in setting (in both games, you're shooting people in contemporary Middle Eastern countries). So far the only thing that sets BF3 apart from MoH is graphics and animations. 2. Both BF3 and MoH partly share a development team...DICE developed MoH's MP and will likely continue to do so while developing BF games. KZ and Resistance share no developers whatsoever. 3. Get your dick out of Battlefield's butt and realize that they are basically going to be doing exactly what CoD has done for the past few years just masking it with "different" franchises. At least Activision changes setting with each game (Modern to WW2 to Modern to Vietnam back to Modern).

@Daian I mean Halo was this generations ( I mean 2000 up to date ) first console FPS and it showed how 2 thumbsticks would work in an FPS. Before that, everyone said FPS games are only for PC until Halo showed up. It had great gameplay, awesome graphics and epic storytelling. Halo: Reach sold more than 200 million in it's first six days on North America.

@pakurtz123 Medal Of Honor and Battlefield are two separate games with two separate game play traits and separate studios; only common factors are DICE help with multiplayer using their frostbite engine and it's published by EA. Call Of Duty is unchanging year after year. It would be like suggesting Resistance and Killzone started alternating year by year we're essentially getting the same thing just because they're published by Sony.

Haha oh I can't wait for this. Everybody gives CoD and Activision so much crap for yearly releases while simultaneously crooning and splooging over how awesome BF3 supposedly will be. And all the while, EA is planning to make MoH and BF3, both modern military shooters that starting soon will both be utilizing the new Frostbite engine, alternate each year, basically releasing a modern military shooter every single year just like Activision does. Cue fanboy rage in 3, 2, 1....

Why is no one saying what I'm thinking/hoping? Did none of you hear about a month or so ago Respawn hired one of the best artists from Star Wars to be one of their lead art developers? I know it may be a stretch but why couldn't it be a battlefront like game, or at least something in the Star Wars universe? Can you imagine a CoD4-esque Star Wars shooter? I don't know about you guys but that sounds pretty awesome to me. But it's just a thought. Jason and West have been involved with making some of the best FPS games for awhile now (the first few medal of honors, and CoD4), so I based on their track record they should deliver big time, even if they make a universe for their game all from scratch. I don't know about y'all but I've been waiting for another Sci-fi FPS for awhile now that could go toe to toe with Halo. I love Halo, but I also love Sci-fi, so the more the merrier. Plus, modern day warfare games are starting to get a little old. But Battlefield 3 is a no brainer buy for me. Anywho those are just my thoughts.

@Daian Halo was a game changer because it made FPS on consoles not only possible, but good. It showed that FPS were no longer just for PCs. That is where it really mattered. PCs, for better or for worse, have always been the home of the geekier side of gaming. Consoles are plug and play. In essence, what Halo did was it brought FPS to the masses.

In order to stop a weed from spreading, you must kill it. chopping off its head looks like you stopped it, but it will regenerate and spread. gotta get it at the roots, the beginning, in order to end it. games like halo, cod, final fantasy, half-life, etc. won't die because they have spread out so far and wide by now. in fact, it would be easier to kill this "halo killer" because we don't know much about it.

I am really not liking the whole 2 year development plan. Well, for starters, it is better than Activisions Call of Duty a year. And since it's 2 different games, it gives each company 2 years to make it, and then release it.

@KSU-Wildcat Hehe, all right, i expressed myself the wrong way, i can admit that :P. The point i was trying to make is that it didn't have as big of an impact as CoD had in the long run., he makes it sound way to overdramatic like it changed gaming for all eternity :). And Halo is so popular too also because it appeals greatly to the masses, there are better Sci Fi FPS out there that really did changed and evolved shooter and gaming in general ( Half Life anyone?). Seriously, ask a 12 year old about Half Life and Halo, he's gonna have no idea what Half Life is even if it's a cornerstone in FPS as we know them today. Oh and CoD is a pretty old series too, not a decade long, but 8 years which is still close. And while we're at it, Half Life is even older :P. Half Life did more for gaming with it's first game than both Halo and CoD ever did, everything from the gameplay to the impressive AI and storytelling was superior to any FPS before and raised the bar tremendously for future FPS. Sorry for rambling , but i just wanted u to know that i am in no way a superficial critic of games, i know a "game changer" when i see one and Halo was never that impressive, solid but not amazing. Not that CoD is, but stop pretending that Halo is. PS. : Sorry for the double post, not enough characters allowed in one comment. ;)

@hardcoreLazors 1.Right, and Halo isn't at all overrated, it's a masterpiece...( + i never said CoD isn't overrated). 2." If it would be multiplatform, I bet it would sell way better tha CoD." Halo 3 sold 8.1 million units in it's first 3 months, Modern Warfare 2 sold 9 million units just on 360...just in it's first week. Halo didn't outsell CoD not even on the same platform. So, you were saying? 3.Also, i'm not even sure what u mean by "Halo began this generation FPS on the consoles".U mean the current gen of consoles? Because Halo is from the previous gen. Or do u mean of our generation? You didn't play GoldenEye 007 on N64, did u? It's utterly absurd to say that CoD wouldn't exist without Halo, it was initially only on PC and then it went multiplatform starting with CoD 2. So lol at everything u said, no offense. :|

So many games get titles like "Halo-Killer," "Call of Duty-Killer," "Grand Theft Auto-Killer." How about instead of focusing on killing another game, just make the game the best that it can be with its own unique feel. Give it its own great things as opposed to taking ideas from other games and trying to improve upon them.

will anyone mind this comment, when the game comes out? gamespot are calling it a halo killer. frank is saying "It allows us to compete with things like Gears and Halo". furthermore "put them on places in our release calendar where they're not cannibalistic to the core business and that's the essential strategy going forward." - he is saying that he considers that they will wait it out for an appropriate time slot to completely avoid crossing swords with the "sci-fi fps big boys". take into account before this project, may even see the light of day we have a few coming out inversion; binary domain; etc.

@ Daian You know why CoD is the best selolling FPS? Because it's overrated, it's always the same and it's on every platform. Besides, without Halo, CoD wouldn't propably excist. Halo began this generation FPS on the consoles. If it would be multiplatform, I bet it would sell way better tha CoD.

@Daian By your knowledge of analyzing a game by sales and, well, sales, the Wii trumps the 360 and PS3, and the games of this generation are titles like Wii Fit, Wii Play, and Black Ops. I'm going out on a limb here and saying that loopy was talking about fun factor and gameplay... Call of Duty has mass casual appeal. Hooray. Series like Halo have a rabid following that has spanned a decade.

@EliteNamedSteve it's a nice concept but that's not how it works, some of the best games over the last 10 years have failed to shift large amounts. This is because for every gamer out there who will buy a game for its quality- after reading reviews, learning about it and playing demo's there are about 10 who will buy games purely based on previous installments, advertising and because their frined told them to.

@loopy_101 "it had nowhere near the same effect the original Halo did." Oh i'm sorry, i thought Call of Duty was the best selling FPS franchise in history. My mistake. @mikeplaya26 Yes, exactly, if anyone can outsell that overrated generic space marine shooter it's the guys that made Modern Warfare 1&2. I'm not a multiplayer nut so i don't care for this obsession to play CoD and their campaigns are ridiculously short but i do enjoy them and they did sell more than anything else in the FPS market.

Why wont EA just stop being so dumb. If you focus solely on beating your competition, your game will suck. You have to focus on making good games and they will sell themselves.

Hmmm.. Doubt it'l take long before Halo kills itself in all honesty. What with no Bungie and the series generally going downhill. Just my personal opinion but I still think Halo 1 & 2 were the peak of the series. 3 was still great, but since then... meh.. ODST was just a let down. That said I agree with ValleyofDoom, trying to make a world as vast as Halo would take a damn genius - which is not possible with EA's sales pitch of 'if its good we'll copy their idea but do it in a year" Interesting though.. We shall see!
