LOS ANGELES--Following five years of lying dormant, the core Battlefield series is leaping back to life this fall with Battlefield 3 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Gamers hoping to make the most of the shooter will have loads of content to play with, according to publisher Electronic Arts.

DLC will be a big part of Battlefield 3, according to EA.

During an investor call this morning, EA announced that Battlefield 3--which ships on October 25--will have three times the number of downloadable content packs as the game's immediate predecessor, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

For reference, Bad Company 2 welcomed seven DLC packs, including two major offerings: the Vietnam and Onslaught expansions, which brought period skirmishes and co-op experiences, respectively, to the shooter.

Battlefield 3's first DLC offering will be the Back to Karkand expansion, which is included with limited edition copies of the game. As for what it will offer, Back to Karkand bundles Battlefield 2 weapons, vehicles, and mutliplayer environments, all updated for the game's new Frostbite 2 game engine.
