E3 2008: EA CEO confirms KOTOR MMO

John Riccitiello tells Conde Nast Portfolio that BioWare's mystery massively multiplayer project is a third installment in the Star Wars series.

Ever since it was announced in 2006, BioWare's massively multiplayer role-playing game has been shrouded in mystery. Though the Canadian developer opened a satellite studio in Austin, Texas, just to develop it, its cofounders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk maintained an iron wall of silence. However, Electronic Arts knew enough about the title to help convince the company to buy BioWare/Pandemic for $860 million last year.

Today, as E3 2008 wound down, the fog hanging around BioWare's MMORPG appears to have dissipated. Less than 72 hours after presiding over EA's own press event--where the project was nowhere to be found--CEO John Riccitiello almost casually revealed the MMORPG in question is a sequel of sorts to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," Riccitiello told Conde Nast Portfolio magazine. "The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about in partnership with Lucas [Arts is] coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry." When contacted by GameSpot, BioWare reps declined to comment further.

BioWare's first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game was released in 2003 for the original Xbox and PC, and was named the year's top RPG by GameSpot. An Obsidian Entertainment-developed sequel was released in 2004 and 2005 on the same two respective platforms. Both critically acclaimed games are set several thousand years before the events of the Star Wars films, and cast players as adventurers who eventually become powerful Jedi Knights.

Currently, the Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG is set for release sometime in 2009. Once it launches, it is unclear what will happen to LucasArts' current massively multiplayer title, the Sony Online Entertainment-developed Star Wars Galaxies.

mystoker you are wrong, WoW could be 10 times better then it is now it will still have people that just wont want to play it, its becoming outdated, even with patch's and updates the game will eventually become dated. new games are now, the new, and thats why people play them, WoW wouldn't cause mmo's to stop being gcreated, it would cause companies to want to creat something more as their doing.

This, WAR, and AoC. If WoW weren't in a bit of a content decline, it would be nearly impossible for new MMOs to etch out an existence

i don't know why people are getting so annoyed by this news, YEs Bioware will be making an MMORPG set in the kotor timeline yet bioware have not said that they have no plans to create KOTOR 3, so why is everyone thinking that just because an mmo is being made there is no chance of ever seeing kotor 3

As if the world needs yet another MMO for no one to play because they're playing WoW. What a waste.

@ Lord_Foortwenti: Did you ever play KoTOR2? The Jedi are all but destroyed and, not giving away any spoilers, the ending doesn't exactly forecast a particularly bright future for them either.

I hope that when this comes out, SWG is DESTROYED! BURNED TO THE GROUND! I know this sounds very violent and SWG fans will hate me for it, but those nge's ruined the game. Forever. So if they destroy it, and have this one instead, all will be better! (note: This is my opinion, I do not hate any fans of Star Wars Galaxies, nor the company Sony Online Entertainment, only the jackass who came up with the New Game Enhancements [NGE])

Best news of this E3, as far as I'm concerned. We've been hearing the rumors for more than two years now, so it's about time they finally admit it. I know which mmo I'll be playing next year.

Damn I dont play these MMO games. Too many people sit on them for 24 hours a day and become amazing at them. Dont have the time to sit all day playing games! I would much prefer a sequel to the game I can just sit and play on the PC when I want to...bad news

Why didnt they just sell it as an add-on expansion for SWG like they did with Trials of Obi 1 & Age of The Wookies, that way SWG would have it all based on the films and before the films. I know this would appeal better to me but this just sounds like a money maker which i have to say eventhough i am a fan LucasArts are known for making money rather than satisfying thier customer base. Even better they could have made it an expansion standalone, that way you wouldnt need SWG and can stil play it if your a Star Wars fan. These are my oppinions and my oppinions only !

I would prefer a sequel to the original, but an MMO is just as good. I hope that you will be able to play in single player ofline mode, that would be cool. But overall i reckon that given this games background, the MMO will be an instant success.

Because it is a Star Wars KOTOR MMORPG, set in the same world as the original Star Wars movies, but thousands of years before Luke Skywalker is born. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Republic fares with Carth Onasi as admiral for the fleet ;)

I'd much rather have a true sequel to KOTOR 2 than a MMO. One of the best things about KOTOR was the amazing indepth story and relationships with the side characters. I don't see how that can be done in a MMO, but I hope for the best.

Yeah, if you crunch numbers and technicalities MMO's have the POTENTIAL to save you money, but in all reality, who here plays one game at a time? I have my wireless games, my PC games, my 360 games, and the worst part of it all is knowing that a lot of the time spent subscribing is time spent NOT PLAYING THE GAME! I resubscribe and play for a week, only to get owned for the rest of the month. MMO's are very costly, annoying, and definitely not cost-effective for pretty much everyone.

I've never been a big fan of MMOs. Mainly because my pc would have a heart attack if I tried to play one. I guess I've never really given one a chance, and I hear that KOTOR on the xbox was a great game.Might have to give this one a try.

Dissapointing news. I REALLY don't like MMOs, but I guess this doesn't completely rule out the possibility of a seperate single player game. I suppose there is a lot to work with as far as a KOTOR MMO is concerned. Oh well. Regardless of how I feel, I hope Bioware succeeds with this one. And I pray a seperate single player game will be in the works somewhere down the line.

wow...you know what I saw just by perusing the first few pages? WHAAAAAAAA x 1000 I can understand people not liking MMO's, they aren't for everyone. I personally love MMO's as they are just super-long RPG's that you can play w/, and make new friends, or "enemies" in. And KotOR was an awesome game, so I am really, really looking forward to this MMO. Sadly, we probably won't see it til 2010 at the earliest....which is a long time to wait for a game with such potential, but hopefully it will live up to it. One thing I really dig about it being set in the Old Republic time-frame is that there were alot of Jedi, not like the SWG setting during which Jedi were very scarce. There is so much they could do with this, and wow, I hope it has a strong PvP component. Jedi vs Dark Jedi vs Bounty Hunter battles could be really intense, and a lot of fun. What I really can't believe though is that there is still so much negativity towards monthly subscriptions. I think this is mostly just from kids that don't have a credit/debit card and Mommy and/or Daddy won't give them access to theirs. B/c I find it hard to believe that a rational adult hasn't broken everything down and realized you actually get more, much more for your money paying a monthly fee then paying that $50-60 off the shelf. Seriously, if you break it down, you get a MUCH better value for your dollar hours>dollars wise from a MMO w/ a monthly sub.

where does it say that they cant also be producing KotOR 3 seperately? i dont see the problem with a huge developer like bioware producing 2 titles for their (arguably) most beloved franchise? *I* certainly hope that this MMO turns out great and that the true KotOR 3 ends up mind blowing.

don't get so down about this just yet, it could turn out interesting. im with all of you, ive played through both KotORs many times each, and ive been hoping for a conclusion to the story in a true KotOR III. But i did find myself wondering when i was playing the games what theyd be like to do with other people. im not sure if this has been said yet but maybe there will be instanced areas (like in WoW; i used to play but i forced myself to quit) which could hold the storyline-esque areas, like instead of having NPC's help you in a mission, there could be other people taking their places. and in the meantime, the non-instanced part of the game could be divided into two general areas, with true-sith inhabiting half and everyone else inhabiting the others. and you could build up armies and attack each other and try to decimate each other, forcing everyone to focus on teamwork to either defend against the attacks, or re-build from a successful attack. i know that most likely the game wont be like that, but dont retire your KotOR lives just yet, this could turn out to be very interesting

I think alot u seemed to forget is that whether its mmo or single player, at least were playin a new gen Kotor Game. And untill iam proven wrong, Bioware's track record for making high quality games is still up there with Bunge, Valve etc.

Agreed, not bothered about this too. EA know what it is all about though, the money. I'm sure the game will sell well, it already has the Star Wars name attached to it. Logical choice, but I'm not paying for this. If KOTOR 3 does surface and it is done by Obsidian I don't think I will buy that either. KOTOR2 was no way as good as the first KOTOR. I would prefer KOTOR3 to be developed by the original bioware team, but for the PC. To me they are always at there best when they develop for the PC.

Lets hope that they don't do what blizzard did and make you have to pay a rather large fee each month for a game where they favor only the players who maxed all of their character's levels. And lets hope you don't level as slowly as in World of Warcraft. But either way, WHOOHOO!!!! Another KOTOR!

@Hihatrider87 Well actually it could be the best game ever made, and it still wouldnt make a diffrence to me (and many, many others), because I downright refuse paying well over the RRP for a game just so I can play with a bunch of people, most of whom I hate, online. And to be quite honest, I dont think BioWare are the super developers everyone makes them out to be, same with companies like Infinity Ward, so I dont really have much faith in them at all. Its also pretty obvious now that BioWare is so big (look at how many projects they are working on at once) that the chances of the original KoTOR team working on this game are slim.

Just because this is an mmorpg that doesn't mean there won't be a great story. Bioware knows what the fans want, they are not going to ruin kotor's reputation with this game. I've played a lot of Guild Wars and I know an MMO can still have a great story. Even if this turns out bad, they will still make KOTOR 3 eventually (or Obsidian will!).

I think the combat from the kotor series could easily fit into an MMO since its like pseudo turn based and like dice rolling stuff or whatever. as for the story aspect, ive never really played an MMO, so I don't really know how much of a problem it'll be. but i do know Bioware and i think they could totally pull it off.

Instead of venting here... why doesn't everyone go vent on BioWare's boards? They actually read those things and take them into account! Many MMOs and games in general have patches made or thing removed from them because the community asked for it in droves.

Wow, I thought people would be a little more open minded. Bioware may give that "Needed" shot in the arm to MMO's. They will focus on story and Morality (When haven't they?). I expect good things to come with Bioware putting their skills in the MMO genre.

ek-andy: it's a bit pessimistic to assume the game will be "generic." you don't seem to have that much faith in bioware. i don't think their making just another by-the-numbers mmo. i'm sure warcraft fans went crazy when they found out the next game would be an mmo. i love the orginal games too, but that doesn't mean this won't be good. think about it like this- one the best rpg devs are making a new star wars mmo. sounds cool. wait until we actually have some info before going nuts.

"EA I FREAKING HATE YOU!" Oh yeah, blame EA, the publisher. Because they totally "forced" BioWare into making KoTOR into an MMO. *end sarcasm*. No, its not EA's fault this happend, the blame all goes to BioWare because it was their idea and their project. EA are just publishing that. Out of the majority of KoTOR fans, who wanted another freaking generic MMO?! Seriously, as if we don't have enough sci-fi MMO's or even just MMO's for that matter without BioWare taking a shot at them. What made KoTOR great was a good story, and fun gameplay. When you make a game playable online you sacrifice both, and then expect the player to pay mothyly. BioWare can get lost. Yet more disapointing news for 2008.
