E3 2008: EA CEO confirms KOTOR MMO

John Riccitiello tells Conde Nast Portfolio that BioWare's mystery massively multiplayer project is a third installment in the Star Wars series.

Ever since it was announced in 2006, BioWare's massively multiplayer role-playing game has been shrouded in mystery. Though the Canadian developer opened a satellite studio in Austin, Texas, just to develop it, its cofounders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk maintained an iron wall of silence. However, Electronic Arts knew enough about the title to help convince the company to buy BioWare/Pandemic for $860 million last year.

Today, as E3 2008 wound down, the fog hanging around BioWare's MMORPG appears to have dissipated. Less than 72 hours after presiding over EA's own press event--where the project was nowhere to be found--CEO John Riccitiello almost casually revealed the MMORPG in question is a sequel of sorts to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," Riccitiello told Conde Nast Portfolio magazine. "The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about in partnership with Lucas [Arts is] coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry." When contacted by GameSpot, BioWare reps declined to comment further.

BioWare's first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game was released in 2003 for the original Xbox and PC, and was named the year's top RPG by GameSpot. An Obsidian Entertainment-developed sequel was released in 2004 and 2005 on the same two respective platforms. Both critically acclaimed games are set several thousand years before the events of the Star Wars films, and cast players as adventurers who eventually become powerful Jedi Knights.

Currently, the Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG is set for release sometime in 2009. Once it launches, it is unclear what will happen to LucasArts' current massively multiplayer title, the Sony Online Entertainment-developed Star Wars Galaxies.

I will pass judgement on the game once I see it done. KOTOR had an awesome story and Bioware does a great job of making the story for all their games solid. I will be interested to see how they do the gameplay for a MMO KOTOR.

Don't know how I feel about KOTOR being an MMORPG... I loved the first and second... I don't want it ruined by others playing in my game.

well, by reading other people's comments i will have to say that everyone will be happy if bioware releases TWO games, MMO and KOTRIII. i personally will like this way because otherwise, it will totally ruin KOTR storyline which everyone seems to like

I don't know guys, after Star Wars Galaxies, I'm not so sure I'm ready to go down that dark side path again. There must be some real big bucks in MMORPG because they keep trying to force it down our thoats.

MMORPGs are the holy grail for developers. Create a game with many blanks in the content and let the player fill them in. Charge a monthly fee in some cases, or sell upgrades for real money in others (or both). It is the best profit machine anyone in the industry has thought of. Still, I will probably end up being part of the problem, snatching it up on release day and playing it religiously until the constant grinding bores me to tears, just so I can build my own Jedi. Ah well.

Hardly a "veil of secrecy" and hardly a surprise to hear it officially. Still disappointing. KOTOR deserved better than this.

What was wrong with the 1st two games that they had to go and totally change the genre? I LIKE the single-player RPG and there's already scant few out there anymore. It seems like Bethesda is the only one out there that believes in not fixing something that ain't broke.

Bioware is developing it. Although LucsArts has been known to destroy IPs before, let us have faith in our friends at Bioware. Be patient, young padawans.

I'm glad EA didn't force Bioware to make this game since the takeover and that it was a concious decision they made as a stand alone studio beforehand. Hopefully that means the game wasn't made with the thought of squeezing every penny possible out of the consumer although it doesn't bode well for future online fees at least it wasn't started with soley them in mind. Also there simply must be an offline sequal to KoTOR 2, the storyline relied too much on the individual for an MMO to work as a direct sequal.

Man, I really wish this is one of those zero-subscription fee MMOs, like Guild Wars (very siimilar to a single-player RPG, which is what Bioware is good at anyway). EA is making a free online game now but not an MMO (Battlefield Heroes). Not that I hate MMOs, it's just that I'm still in college with no job yet, all my games are single player.

Nice. I loved Star War's RPG games. The only problem I have is that they take off "(working title)". They should come up with something intriging and fast.

I think this might be misrepresenting what the game will be. I doubt it will be so much a sequel to KOTOR, but rather an MMO set in the star wars universe of the same TIME FRAME as KOTOR. it's a great idea, since there's so much more freedom and a LOT less lore to constrain them than an MMO set in the time of episodes 1-6 or after(like SWG). People call it a KOTOR MMO because KOTOR was the most well-known Star Wars "thing" to be set in that time frame. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

I look forward to seeing more about this, although it's nice to finally have confirmation. I'm excited that the series is returning home to Bioware. From what I've seen in different interviews, etc., it looks like they are really examining the MMORPG genre and trying to think outside the box. Also, Obsidian really made a mess of the storyline at the end of KotOR II, so it will be interesting to see where Bioware goes with it. Not to mention that this will be replacing the very disappointing SW Galaxies.

What are you people doing - a KOTOR MMO? This is one of the best Single Player RPG games ever. The story needs to finish - all the people who have played Kotor 1 and 2 deserve a KOTOR 3. Turning it into a MMO is an isult and a slap in the face for people who have spent good money on the first 2 games. KOTOR made a huge profit beacause of people like me who just love this sort of game - give some back - what you are doing sucks - I will not touch it if it goes MMO or anything else you guys make for that matter

MMO's really need to be broken down and redesigned from the ground up. All the different titles currently available boil down to the same "grind, quest, collect" scheme that, even when done right, gets really old. In my opinion, if Bioware really wants to make this a successful title they'll need to "reinvent the wheel" so to speak. Good luck on that, and I hope EA keeps their money-grubbing hands out of development.

Hmm I think they should make a KOTOR 3 and an MMO cause Kotor is great because of the choices you get to make to change events and I'm not sure how they would pull off world changing decisions in an MMO cause there r so many different players. Knowing bioware they will try to do this though considering that they've done this on every one of their games ever pretty much. I just hope it works out.

Meh, but it might be worthwhile. They'd better make KOTOR 3 though. I am not that into MMOs, never have, never will. However, I do love KOTOR. Just as long as it isn't something like SWG 2 I might get it. SWG sucks.

Everyone calm down and take a deep breath. This game will not be Kotor 3. This game will not be SWG 2. Bioware is promising some very innovative injections of story-telling into the MMO scene. A developer promising things like this is nothing new, a developer pulling it off would be a first. So lets get ready for something thats not Kotor, something thats not Pre Cu/NGE and something thats most importantly NOTHING like the current SWG.

@chaingun543 If it is indeed in the vein of CU SWG as opposed to the NGE crap SOE has right now then yea, I will give it a go. If it turns out to be Lucas Arts getting to start a game in the the mold of the NGE as opposed to the previous conversion of a game into what is now SWG: NGE, then no, I'm not touching it. As to what happens to SWG, heh, it goes the way of the dodo, as it is very unlikely Lucas Arts will renew SOE's license. Honestly, SOE had better dump/replace any of their higher ups that were around when the NGE for SWG hit, as that fiasco has severely damaged their reputation and will make it harder for them to stay in the MMO business.

I think this is a very smart move by Lucarts/Bioware/Ea. Interacting with countless other jedi yields many oppurtunites. They could make an expanding story where players have a choice of forming an army to defend the republic or form bands of sith through the galaxy. That adds in the option of space battles and factions like Trade Federation etc. However, I also think they should truely expand KOTOR on the Next-Gen consoles. Not just missions to run but maybe a galaxy of planets all with random side missons and Jedi training areas. Summary: Great Move for PC owners but dont forget the Lucretive Next-Gen Market.

I have to agree with householdman. I think taking KOTOR into that genre is a mistake. One of the greatest things about KOTOR is its storyline and the players role in shaping that storyline both of which will be lost on a MMORPG. Not only that, but they're moving KOTOR out of its established market into something completely different where it will be competing with other established MMORPGs (such as WoW and Age of Conan), and I highly doubt that most gamers will be willing to pay a monthly fee for both games. Lastly, it appears that this game will only be available on PC, once again leaving the established Xbox audience. The whole thing just seems like a bad move.

Bull sh*t on it being the most anticipated game for the industry hell not even that many xbox 360 owners are even interested in an MMORPG. I think they should just make another great single player game and if it doesnt have a single player component i probably wont buy it.
