E3 2008: EA CEO confirms KOTOR MMO

John Riccitiello tells Conde Nast Portfolio that BioWare's mystery massively multiplayer project is a third installment in the Star Wars series.

Ever since it was announced in 2006, BioWare's massively multiplayer role-playing game has been shrouded in mystery. Though the Canadian developer opened a satellite studio in Austin, Texas, just to develop it, its cofounders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk maintained an iron wall of silence. However, Electronic Arts knew enough about the title to help convince the company to buy BioWare/Pandemic for $860 million last year.

Today, as E3 2008 wound down, the fog hanging around BioWare's MMORPG appears to have dissipated. Less than 72 hours after presiding over EA's own press event--where the project was nowhere to be found--CEO John Riccitiello almost casually revealed the MMORPG in question is a sequel of sorts to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," Riccitiello told Conde Nast Portfolio magazine. "The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about in partnership with Lucas [Arts is] coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry." When contacted by GameSpot, BioWare reps declined to comment further.

BioWare's first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game was released in 2003 for the original Xbox and PC, and was named the year's top RPG by GameSpot. An Obsidian Entertainment-developed sequel was released in 2004 and 2005 on the same two respective platforms. Both critically acclaimed games are set several thousand years before the events of the Star Wars films, and cast players as adventurers who eventually become powerful Jedi Knights.

Currently, the Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG is set for release sometime in 2009. Once it launches, it is unclear what will happen to LucasArts' current massively multiplayer title, the Sony Online Entertainment-developed Star Wars Galaxies.

I started bashing things into a brick wall around my computer when i found out that they want to make Kotor a mmorpg! i mean a monthly rate and all sux!! i mean ok ill give it to them that a old republic rpg would be kinda kool you know your a jedi and you have a mission or something (everyones going to pick jedi anyway.) and allies that you meet plus other players. but definitly not kotor sequel. think from a marketing perspective. Gas prices rise and alot of other stuff is too. even a monthly rate isnt acfordable so i think even if it is a good game people wont be able to pay to play. i mean make it a rpg with an online capability like Fable! i have been living to play the last kotor (not saying this is it). i personaly think they may lose money by doing this. then make the fans mad by discontinuing the story cause they didnt get what they wanted. and dont kid yourselves that is what they want! MONEY! who cares about the fans!! if they dont get the money they want then they will probgally shut down the KOTOR story and leave all the fans hanging! i would like them to either prove by doing it right or tell me im wrong straight up to me personaly eye to eye! My question is... Who here agrees with me? im not going to comment on storylines cause i trust well enough that they will make a good story.

This is the perfect way to kill a good thing. I think it's a good idea to make an MMO in the old republic, but to call it a sequal to KotOR? C'mon Bioware, stop calling it a sequel because it isn't. I for one am not going to pay some monthly rate to pretend to have a sequel to a great rpg. I'm not going to buy it, and maybe if the majority of the KotOR fanbase don't buy it, Lucas Arts and Bioware might wise up and give us what we want. A real sequel to KotOR.

A Star Wars MMORPG is fine but I want an actual third KOTOR RPG. The other two were great as RPG's but it will totally suck if they make KOTOR 3 into an MMO. Come on Bioware, just make a start on KOTOR 3 already!

The concesus seems to be that this will be KOTOR in name only. All KOTOR fans should boycott this until they come out with t third RPG to finish the trilogy.

this is perfect imo prolly ganna be a mix of kotor and mass effect mechanics since mass effect was kinda a "spiritual sequal" in the fact you could partake in space travel and what not. i hope that this does not get half assed cause i believe it has pottential to be the greatest game ever made (not to sound to nerdy)

nothing could make me happier than this :) ...well, very few things Bioware is, without question, the best in the industry and Star Wars has proven itself as one of the most endearing and beloved franchises of all time. Early SWG was the greatest gaming experience I've ever had and I can't imagine Bioware failing to go well beyond the mark of Sony. Win-Win-Win say no more, I'm sold...will pre-order - thank you, and good night

Sounds interesting. But I truly hope that this is not a replacement for KOTOR III, and they make that down the road.

I found the old SWG (know what I mean when I say old) to be incredibly vast and immersive.... and the story only served as a backdrop. For those familiar with KOTOR's story, it makes a pretty heavy backdrop! I have to be honest, I just want to run around another SW universe (galaxy?) and get cool skills and items.... I find nothing but disappointment with MMORPG's storylines on a personal level. FFXI had a great story, but you and a billion other people were pretty much just along for the ride and it had nothing to do with you. In short: Great presentation is key, but so is character creation. That's the real game for me. Looks and stats!!!! (and mad exploration)

I happen to be very happy with this new MMO because my two favorite games are WoW and KOTOR. most of the other comments are sounding Half empty rather then half full so people who are reading this might get a bad impession when really this might be quite awsome i mean think of all the cool things you will be able to do and class choices and even fraction choices like Republic or Sith, Jedi Master or Sith Lord so even though most of you are die hard KOTOR story line what other story is there to make. KOTOR 2 story line was pretty dull so cant exspect it to get much better. It went from most important person in the galxies to some guy who served under Revan

I agree with the below post. There should be another third KOTOR that should keep up with the story. I am not saying that MMO's don't keep up with the story but generally a single player game seems to follow up story lines better, that's in my opinion though. I'm mainly citing storylines such as Guild Wars and WoW compared to the story line progression of a Star Ocean or Breath of Fire game.

they should still make a third kotor to follow the story of the first 2, unless thats what this one is about. but that would be pretty tricky to pull off on an online game

Just a thought. Maybe the MMO they are making is simply based in the KOTOR part in star wars and not a direct continuation of the other two games. I mean it is a pretty cool setting. Do we have any proof that they are not making KOTOR 3 for the XBOX 360 aswell?

In total agreeance with my fellow gamers when I say that KOTOR III need not be a MMORPG. I want more continuity without having to go online with my alltime favorite title in the Star Wars Universe and possibly all of my gaming experience. Please play to the will of the gamer, not the investor. You'll sell just as much by keeping it the way it is. And if you're still going with the MMORPG, let us little poeple play at home...

I completely agree with those who hope it doesn't turn out like SWG. However, since it's Bioware doing it I t hink we will be okay. Also, I like what was said about making a KOTOR 3 single player and then developing an MMO with an alternate or parallel story line. They could even work on them concurrently and tie the stories together. I guess we will all just have to wait and see what happens.

As long as it is not like SWG right now I will give it shot. I will be thrilled if it was like SWG of old but I am going to give it a shot when it comes out. I hope they also make a KOTOR game for the xbox 360 as well.

To be perfectly honest, you guys are not being fair. Sure i hate EA, but have we completely lost faith in Bioware? I don't believe Bioware would sell out the loyal fans of the series. I'm sure this game will be different, but good none the less

This would be the smartest way to do it and I think what will make all of us happy. Make a KOTOR 3 for the console and PC just like the rest of the series so that we can conclude the story or at least get another chapter to it THEN do an MMO that starts a new or parallel storyline!! That way fans like me will get the single player experience that we know and love and those aho are excited about a KOTOR MMO will get one after the trilogy. Makes sense to me

Software companies have two audiences to appeal to: the GAMERS (who buy the product) and the SHAREHOLDERS (who buy their stock). Apparently somebody "ran the numbers" and figured out that they could make more $$$ doing a MMORPG. Now that has pissed off a number of gamers, who more than likely, will not buy this new product. So here's my SOLUTION: make the game MMORPG, but with a twist. Allow gamers to buy just the storyline single player verision, with the OPTION of paying for access to the online multiplayer content. That way die hard fans can still buy and play a great game, and those who want to take it the extra step can pay until they lose interest.

You know what the really funny thing about all this is... this MMO is likely going to be very much like the NGE version of Star Wars Galaxies. Allot of the developers on the dev team are former SOE employees who worked on SWG, and Im sure they know the mistakes they made that were fixed with the NGE and aren't going to make them again from the start. Like it or not, be prepared for this game to be more of a current SWG version clone then anything else.

i am very disappointed. after waiting years for a sequel, i find out we don't get one. no matter what they call this, it's not KOTOR III. i, like many KOTOR fans i am sure, don't want to interact with a bunch of kids who got their mother's credit cards and a bunch of retards whose only goal is to make other gamers lives miserable. i don't want to join guilds and have to make friends with twenty people just to go kill the sith lord. i am a true fan of RPGs. an anti social gamer that just wants to sit alone in front of his TV for hundreds of hours playing a game with a great story and characters. KOTOR II was one of the best of those, and now they decide to kill it by going MMO. MMOs are fine for others, but not for me, and they shouldn't take over a game franchise. it annoyed the hell out of me when final fantasy did it too. but all anyone cares about in the gaming industry today is how much money they can make. and they will make a lot of money with this. though it won't make much difference to them, they won't get mine. :{

This was great news... until I read that it was an MMO. The most likable thing about KotOR was the storyline and the characters. Now thanks to EA (my most hated developer/producer) all that is worth nothing now that a perfect storyline and characters are unachievable because it's an MMO. Thanks EA! Yet ANOTHER epic game series you've bought the rights to and screwed up! But I'll buy it, anyway. They KNOW I will. If I don't get to play as Revan in a single player mode (provided they're actually going to make one) I'm getting my money back! We DESERVE to play as Revan again after about six years without him!

Meh it is an MMO :( Sorry but i am not going to buy it I am very disappointed from Lucasarts for their decision :( They have abandoned quality games for the PC and they are taking the Multiplayer easy route... Fortunately i have also a XBOX360 and i will play SW Force Unleashed Its bad that SW Force Unleashed is not going to be released for the PC and they are releasing this MMORPG sh*t instead

having both SP and MMO options would be great...if they do it. they've done such a great job with the previous two that a third SP game would be great to finish it off...then again i guess they CAN combine story line with MMO style of gameplay. However it raises one question: what happens after you beat the story line? it'd be more fun and a better idea if they did similar to Conan...only this time it would require more work cuz for MMO they'd have to figure out alot of quests for one to do. ITS SO COMPLICATED!! ARGH!!

This sucks. I would have much rather had a full end to the trilogy, with a single-player RPG. For me at least, this is like watching the first two original Star Wars movies, loving them and finding out that the last one was created entirely out of viewer submissions. If they want to make an MMO in that time period, that's fine, I won't get it because MMOs ALWAYS have large amounts of level grinding and crap like that. Not to mention that the story always takes a big hit (the best part pf KoTOR). I just hope they give us a real successor instead of going after subscription fees.

'I'm sure a Bioware rep reads these blogs - if I was running their business I would do so.' Oh man, lol at this. You people complaining about this title are fools (in particular, those of you complaing that 'your' personal needs should be considered, which is laughable). Irrefutable facts: 1) You are a tiny minority, particularly compared to a potential playerbase that could easily rival WoW's current population (and no, that's not an exaggeration. Bioware is a superb company, and Star Wars [unless it is brutally butchered as in SWG] is a license to print gold). 2) Money talks, especially when it's an extraordinary sum, well above what any solo-player KotOR sequel could garnish. We're talking box sales plus an industry-standard $14.99 a month fee. There is simply no comparison. 3) WoW is getting old. By mid or later 2009 (or early 2010, which I think is a more likely option, despite the article above), the bloom will be off WotLK, and people will once again be looking elsewhere. Like it or not, WoW is getting old, and eventually, even if the updates are still coming fast, people are going to get burned out. Many have already left already (an account here and there - it hasn't been a flood by any means), but once Arthas starts dying with some frequency, I think you'll see a large exodus from WoW. Besides, hasn't Blizzard themselves announced that another MMO is in development? So, no, the people at Bioware do not care if you're offended. They know that many thousands more people for every one of you - craving a 'healthy' SWG - are ecstatic. You and you desires are miniscule compared to both their happiness and, of greater importance, their wallets. Accept it, because it's not changing. Boo hoo for you. I'm all smiles.

OK, now that I've had a week to let this all sink in... a starwars mmo set in the KotOR time- frame could very possibly be a good thing, if done correctly. Given Biwoare's excellent track record, I'm leaning towards this being an obvious shoe in. But!! and I say this with a great amount of passion and love for the kotor series, they should also make a true sequal to the SP game that we all know. kotor just wouldn't be kotor otherwise. There are just too many of us out there that want to experience the single player, story driven game that gave us faith in starwars again, even in the midst of episode 1 and two. After seeing what they did with the dialogue system for MassEffect, I have been waiting for the day they would announce a real KOTOR sequal. I remain hopeful that that day will soon come.

Agree with the anti-MMO people. KOTOR was great. RPG's should have a plot line. Why couldn't they develop a single player game to finish the trilogy??? KOTOR left everyone hanging with the fate of Revan and foreshadowing of a closer to the series. So much for this franchise.

I'm sure a Bioware rep reads these blogs - if I was running their business I would do so. There seems to be a lot of discontent about KOTOR becoming and MMO and it's understandable; most of us play such RPGs for their story value rather than hours of incoherent walking, killing, resource gathering, spaghetti story. Also, I think it's a bad idea to charge $$ for a game and $$ for a subscription; something like this only happens when a company changes to a serious profit gathering strategy. I also won't pay $20/month to play a game, there are tons of games out there already that don't require a fee to play other than the sticker price.
