E3 07 dated, detailed

Newly renamed E3 Media and Business Summit will be held July 11-13 at a Santa Monica venue and a variety of Los Angeles hotel locations.

The Entertainment Software Association today clarified a number of significant details of the new, downsized Electronic Entertainment Expo, now renamed the E3 Media and Business Summit. In July, the ESA said the megasized and circuslike Electronic Entertainment Expo, held in the massive Los Angeles Convention Center, would be "evolving into a more intimate event."

Today, the ESA announced that such intimacy will be found in Barker Hangar, a 40,000-square-foot property located in Santa Monica, California. The organization also confirmed that the event will no longer be held in May and will now run from July 11 to 13. While the total square footage of the hanger is significant, E3 organizers say they will only sell 16,000 square feet of usable space to exhibitors.

No information on the "Big Three" pre-E3 press conferences traditionally staged by Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony--which are not organized by the ESA--was available as of press time, though the July announcement indicated they would continue.

The ESA confirmed the event would be invitation-only and be open to both ESA members and nonmembers. "The new E3 event will be more personal, efficient, and focused, and it will provide the top stakeholders who make games, sell games, and cover games streamlined access to the people and products they most need to see," ESA president Doug Lowenstein said in a statement.

Display areas in the hangar will be limited to between 100 and 400 square feet and be much more modest than the massive booths that dominated E3s of yore. Complementing the Barker Hangar location--"where attendees will be able to casually test drive the featured video games planned for the coming holiday season and beyond," according to the ESA--will be hotel suite and meeting room sessions at a number of additional Santa Monica and Los Angeles locations.

The ESA said there will also be a number of lunchtime panels and executive presentations, as well as a serious games component to the event.

"By combining suite-based meetings with the software showcase in a controlled and business-like environment," Lowenstein said, "we believe we will successfully fulfill our primary objective of giving high-level media the best of all worlds--the chance to engage in highly personal, one-on-one dialogue with leading game company executives, as well as the chance to demo games on their own time."

Bookings for the E3 Media and Business Summit are expected to begin within the next 30 days, according to the ESA.

It remains to be seen if this new "evolution" is a good change for the industry but I will miss the spontaneous nature and pure wackyness of the old E3. The new format, while possibly more efficient, will be a sterile presentation of each developer's/publisher's offerings. The same thing that happens all year round. Who knows, it may be for the best but it certainly won't be as entertaining for us gamers when we are used to being blown away by some games and underwhelmed by companies presentations.

Booooo! I know I would never be able to go. But, E3 was a spectacle. That was what was so cool about it.

Since I never thought I would be able to go anyways.....this seems no different other than the fact this will give developers 2 more months to polish their demos....

People, you don't understand. E3 is a closed industry event, "gamers" are not actually welcome!!

Thank God for Live. I can see the movies and play the demos from my own home. I would have liked to have gone 8 years ago but I'll settle for my living room. It's funny that all the other explos seem to want to be bigger and E3 just wants to give it up. Still calling it E3 leaves a bitter taste in my mouth though.

They need to drop the 3rd E, E3 is no longer an exposition by definition. "Exposition:" a large-scale public exhibition or show, as of art or manufactured products. E2, the **** show.

I still think it needs to be held in a convention centre, not a bunch of hotels, even if its only for people in the industry

It's unfortunate that therer is no longer a large game expo, such as was E3. Before, it was possible to go there and see the sites. Gamers would be like kids in a candy store, but no longer. It's just a sad, sad site. E3, we salute you.

e3 was always meant to be for "industry" people anyways, it just got out of hand. I think it sucks that joe blow can't go, but I think we will get better coverage of the games comming to us. The attention of the convention will be focused on the people who diseminate information to the masses, instead of the fat guy who's gonna bring back key chains for his jelous friends.

This is disgraceful. After all that E3's been through and now it's turning out like the beatles and just about every other band. Taking a stupid solo career(ish).

At least there will still be a showroom floor. The new restrictions could be a good thing. Having meetings in suites will be a pain, though.

A shame that it's been downsized. July is much better for E3 anyways. Games will be further along in development for holiday releases, etc.

E3 was always about creating hype for games and systems about to be launched. The way that this is sounding we'd be better of just reading magazines and looking at websites to get our news. There will really be no point for the "fans" to try to sneak in. Hopefully we can get a show that is like TGS...But with limited tickets availible to give the people who make this industry a chance to see all the goodness.

At least I schmoozed my way into both shows that were here in Atlanta. Even though now it seems lame reminiscing about playing unreleased PS one and N64 games.

Let's just hope this actually gives smaller developers a chance to really show their games to the right people, and puts them on equal ground with the big companies who just put out the same grand theft auto clones and movie based games all the time. (I'm looking at you EA and Activision). I can deal with no public and only being let in by invitation if it becomes more like the Game Developers Conference where real ideas are brought to the table and not overshadowed by money grubbing whores. /em raises his glass to independent devs

I kinda understand why they had to do this: A: It was becoming far too expensive for some of the smaller developers and publishers to pull of an E3 presentation. B: It ensures all things that are featured at E3 get equal attention. The month of May will not be the same anymore...

post an article stating that E3 returns back to its old format and I'll be ecstatic..... at the moment I'm still bitter that the consumer has been taken out of the equation at E3. It just wont ever be the same.

Well, this improve the issue a bit. Sure, it won't be as crazy and exciting for me staying home from school JUST to catch E3 in May, but I think this is relaxing for the media, and now I won't have to ditch school.
