E3 07 dated, detailed

Newly renamed E3 Media and Business Summit will be held July 11-13 at a Santa Monica venue and a variety of Los Angeles hotel locations.

The Entertainment Software Association today clarified a number of significant details of the new, downsized Electronic Entertainment Expo, now renamed the E3 Media and Business Summit. In July, the ESA said the megasized and circuslike Electronic Entertainment Expo, held in the massive Los Angeles Convention Center, would be "evolving into a more intimate event."

Today, the ESA announced that such intimacy will be found in Barker Hangar, a 40,000-square-foot property located in Santa Monica, California. The organization also confirmed that the event will no longer be held in May and will now run from July 11 to 13. While the total square footage of the hanger is significant, E3 organizers say they will only sell 16,000 square feet of usable space to exhibitors.

No information on the "Big Three" pre-E3 press conferences traditionally staged by Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony--which are not organized by the ESA--was available as of press time, though the July announcement indicated they would continue.

The ESA confirmed the event would be invitation-only and be open to both ESA members and nonmembers. "The new E3 event will be more personal, efficient, and focused, and it will provide the top stakeholders who make games, sell games, and cover games streamlined access to the people and products they most need to see," ESA president Doug Lowenstein said in a statement.

Display areas in the hangar will be limited to between 100 and 400 square feet and be much more modest than the massive booths that dominated E3s of yore. Complementing the Barker Hangar location--"where attendees will be able to casually test drive the featured video games planned for the coming holiday season and beyond," according to the ESA--will be hotel suite and meeting room sessions at a number of additional Santa Monica and Los Angeles locations.

The ESA said there will also be a number of lunchtime panels and executive presentations, as well as a serious games component to the event.

"By combining suite-based meetings with the software showcase in a controlled and business-like environment," Lowenstein said, "we believe we will successfully fulfill our primary objective of giving high-level media the best of all worlds--the chance to engage in highly personal, one-on-one dialogue with leading game company executives, as well as the chance to demo games on their own time."

Bookings for the E3 Media and Business Summit are expected to begin within the next 30 days, according to the ESA.

Jaysonguy, you think M$ dominated E3 06 with its 360 and games? I am not sure if you watched anything at all, but Nintendo dominated E3 06. I also dont think the PS3's poor performance has anything to do with the Downsizing of E3. You know how crazy it would have been if both PS3 and the Wii came strong.

Umm...they should open it to the public, actually, if they wanted to offset the cost, charge like 5 dollars for admission or something. Too bad, oh well.

"E3 was cancelled for 3 simple reasons: 1. Microsoft completely dominated the 2006 E3 with the Xbox 360 and all of the games shown for the Xbox 360. 2. Sony completely disappointed people at the 2006 E3. The Playstation 3 has received nothing but negative publicity ever since the 2006 E3. Sony decided not to attend a future E3 event, because they didn't want to get hurt like that again. 3. EA decided not to attend the next E3, because they make a lot of games for Sony systems. EA thought they would be wasting money to spend a lot of money like that, but avoid Playstation products. EA would have attended if Sony would have attended, but Sony decided not to attended anymore, all because the Playstation 3 did so poorly at the 2006 E3. Bottom Line: The poor performance of the Playstation 3 is the reason why there will be no more E3's like there used to be!" YOu have no idea what you're talking about. I cannot even start to explain how wrong you are for two main reasons. 1. I'd have to type for upwards of an hour 2. The chances you'll understand it are slim

It just won't be the same. The hectic nature of E3 was one of its main appeals. This probably won't be any different than other company showcases - news coming out of those just isn't "E3 news" and therefore less meaningful. Personally I couldn't care less if it makes game journalists work easier. Gamespot did a hell of a job covering the event in the past - I think that was in part the result of the tension of the event and the need to "fight for your news" and to deliver good coverage. I'm very sad about this - it could have been avoided by making modifications to the existing E3 setup. Why they had to outright cancel it is beyond me. Next year it probably would have generated a little less hype anyway because all the systems are out and there are no console launches.

This kind of thing was already happening anyways with meet and greets as well as showing of games in a controlled atmosphere. This is good because devs always have to scramble for an e3 build which always takes a month away from production realistically. Putting it in July allows for the games shown to be in a better place. I will miss E3 though. Glad I went this past year!!

I think this is good. Journalist will get better coverage and footage, i.e. gamespot; and developer can spend that money on developement like they shoulda been doin.

Mmm I just feel that E3 is going the wrong way, I mean the video game industry is expanding rapidly, more people are playing video games, not just teenagers. By making E3 smaller is kinda like shutting out the consumer, I might be wrong, but thats how I feel.

You can tell someone like mike_mgoblue has never been to and possibly never seen true coverage of E3 in his entire life to make a statement like that. As someone who actually HAS been to E3 before I can understand why the ESA wants it this way. E3 is dead, long live E3.

Thank you. This is what the game industry needs! Thou its a shame that smaller developers might have a hard time to "reach out" to the big media now.

Invitation only? That means smaller developers with possibly more talent won't be able to show off their stuff... that sucks.

"E3 Media and Business Summit" hmmm doesn't have the same pop that "E3" had. As long as important gaming news is still delivered this change is fine by me.

Sounds good I can't wait to see how much it really has changed. Plus it will be smaller but that could also be a good thing. That way more things get seen.
