E3 07 dated, detailed

Newly renamed E3 Media and Business Summit will be held July 11-13 at a Santa Monica venue and a variety of Los Angeles hotel locations.

The Entertainment Software Association today clarified a number of significant details of the new, downsized Electronic Entertainment Expo, now renamed the E3 Media and Business Summit. In July, the ESA said the megasized and circuslike Electronic Entertainment Expo, held in the massive Los Angeles Convention Center, would be "evolving into a more intimate event."

Today, the ESA announced that such intimacy will be found in Barker Hangar, a 40,000-square-foot property located in Santa Monica, California. The organization also confirmed that the event will no longer be held in May and will now run from July 11 to 13. While the total square footage of the hanger is significant, E3 organizers say they will only sell 16,000 square feet of usable space to exhibitors.

No information on the "Big Three" pre-E3 press conferences traditionally staged by Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony--which are not organized by the ESA--was available as of press time, though the July announcement indicated they would continue.

The ESA confirmed the event would be invitation-only and be open to both ESA members and nonmembers. "The new E3 event will be more personal, efficient, and focused, and it will provide the top stakeholders who make games, sell games, and cover games streamlined access to the people and products they most need to see," ESA president Doug Lowenstein said in a statement.

Display areas in the hangar will be limited to between 100 and 400 square feet and be much more modest than the massive booths that dominated E3s of yore. Complementing the Barker Hangar location--"where attendees will be able to casually test drive the featured video games planned for the coming holiday season and beyond," according to the ESA--will be hotel suite and meeting room sessions at a number of additional Santa Monica and Los Angeles locations.

The ESA said there will also be a number of lunchtime panels and executive presentations, as well as a serious games component to the event.

"By combining suite-based meetings with the software showcase in a controlled and business-like environment," Lowenstein said, "we believe we will successfully fulfill our primary objective of giving high-level media the best of all worlds--the chance to engage in highly personal, one-on-one dialogue with leading game company executives, as well as the chance to demo games on their own time."

Bookings for the E3 Media and Business Summit are expected to begin within the next 30 days, according to the ESA.

Damn, and I was so looking forward to going down to L.A. next year to attend E3 and maybe rub elbows with GameSpot employees.

"The only thing wrong with the downsize is that the "little guy" won't be able to show off their product." Really, they couldn't without a big publisher backing them at old E3 either.

I hate the ESA. It seems here they are sacrificing making money for their number one goal: preventing people from having fun. Lunchtime panels, executive presentations, and meeting room sessions? What the hell is that all about?!? This is about freaking video games. They'll probably envoke a dress code next. Thanks again ESA, you bunch of tight wad ninny fun haters!

I think it sounds like a great idea. If only they had both the party like E3 & the E3 Media and Business Summit. Here hoping GS/EB Managers are still invited.

i agree with expertgamer3. E3 was fine the way t was, and im nto rly into this "invitation only" BS. of course, i live in VA, and will probably never go to E3 until im out of college, but still, the people in Los Angeles shouldnt have to put up with this.

Looks interesting, let's just wait and see exactly how this event will hold to the downsize. If they just focus on whats important (the games for this matter) I'm all for it... Besides, the show has never been open to the general public, so I can't argue about the changes to an event that I can't attent to.

they've should have just kept the old E3 but with new rules more limited maximum space allowed limited sound/lights limit not allowed to give away free stuff like pens t-shirts and such no booth babes anyone whom would break the rules would have to pay a fine and be ported from next year all this would limit the amount of idiots that werent supposed to be at E3 anyway!

is disappointing. It makes it sound like it's going to be a gameshow for the mega-companies, and the media outlets that those companies frequently advertise with are going to pay attention them mostly, rather than the smaller game developers that don't have as much cash to bring in those kinds of favors. Really is a shame.

Exactly...E3 is acting more like a trade show, which is what it's always been. The past few years have seen E3 turn into a circus of non-trade related crap, thanks in big part to the media attention that's been given to it. I like it better this way, personally...I want to know about what's coming out or what's being worked on, and I have no interest in seeing idiot celebrities there giving their take on stuff, nor do I care about booth babes or anything like that. It'd be the same thing if Gamespot started doing hollywood gossip or started flashing (even more) ads on here when we're all trying to get info on games or hardware we're interested in...this site is about games, just like E3 is about the gaming trade. It's amazing how many of you don't see that, and you're all bummed because it's tailored more to the "big bad businesses" now. "Awww man, they sux, stoopid noobs are make it totally lame now, blah blah." Were you all naive enough to think you'd actually get into the show in the first place???? And really, if you need booth babes that badly, you're just a few clicks away from infinite amounts of free porn online where chicks actually take their clothes off...check that out instead.

E3 2007 won't happen like previous E3's, all because Sony got their butt whipped and decided not to attended another E3. After that, EA, the worlds largest third-party videogame publisher decided not to attend another E3, because they released more games for PS2 than any other system. So, we can thank Sony for their poor showing at the 2006 E3.

I think what most of us are failing to realize is that E3 always was, and always will be, primarily a -trade event-. It's not meant for the regular consumer, it was supposed to be a way for the industry to inform itself and the press of what each company was up to. The splurging on massive booths, booth babes, etc., etc. was actually detracting from the fundamental purpose of the show. Not to mention marginalizing smaller developers and publishers that couldn't afford to keep up with the glitz factor of the big name companies. The smaller event is a return to the form of what E3 was supposed to be.

E3 was great, now it's gone downhill. It doesn't even seem fun anymore, since it's all 'down to business' now.

Not sure why the majority of us even care. I mean, it's not like we'd ever get to go so it really doesn't matter whether it's the same or not. The "event would be invitation-only " Means that pretty much only the media types (magazines and websites) will get invited, along with the "My girlfriend's brother is a janitor for Microsoft" types. If I, and most other gamers on the outside of the industry, had a realistic chance of going, then maybe we'd care.

It doesn't sound too bad. As long as we get good game coverage from sites like GS and IGN, I'll be cool with the new setup.

I sure hope the game turns out good, albeit all this hype over it. This is one of the most hyped games ever. Even DRIV3R didn't have this much attention over it.

E3 *was* a perfect representation of what gaming was all about -0 having fun and going ga-ga over the latest and greatest. If stiff executives got upset that no one was paying attention to their sequel rehashes or unimaginative games, then its their own fault. The old E3 will repappear, it'll just be called something else and probably won't be as big.....but very soon it'll be more important to gamers.....the ones who AREN'T executives.

Wow... these guys are retarded. They took the largest event known to gamers and made it into a small tea party for stuck up executives... When they said more focused I thought they would make it more about the games instead of the girls, not make it into this.... this... travesty...
