E3 06: The Darkness Preshow Report

It's a game about a mob hitman who's possessed by demons and has all kinds of freaky special powers, what else do you need to know?

The Darkness is a game that has a lot going for it. Based on a dark and stylish comic book series that has been around for 10 years, and developed by Starbreeze, the team that brought us The Chronicles of Riddick, The Darkness is a game to keep an eye on.

The game is based on the comic book as well as the upcoming film, and it tells the story of Jackie Estacado, a mob hitman. But Jackie isn't your average, everyday mob hitman; he's also possessed by a demon that gives him special powers. Specific details of the story haven't been revealed, but if the game follows the comic book, then you can expect a violent story of betrayal and revenge.

Because The Darkness is a first-person shooter, you'll spend a lot of time exploring dark, dangerous environments and basically killing anything that moves. After all, a large portion of the game takes place in the slums of New York City, which is a pretty scary place. You'll also be able to explore the Otherworld, which is an alternate universe inhabited by demons. Using a combination of those powers and some good, old-fashioned firepower, Jackie wages war against everyone from police officers to mobsters. The screenshots that we've seen so far indicate that Jackie will be able to use both guns and his dark powers at the same time. In several shots, Jackie is impaling an enemy with elongated, sharp, black arms while using his normal human arms to fire weapons.

The Darkness is scheduled to appear on 2K Games' roster at E3 this year, so hopefully we'll get to see more of the game during the show. It's currently scheduled to appear on both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 later this year, so check back often for more updates.
