E3 06: Nintendo reveals Wii classic controller

Nintendo gives the Wii a "classic" gamepad for virtual console games.

Nintendo included an image of a new Wii controller hidden within a package of hardware screenshots available for download on the Nintendo press site. The image titled "Wii_classic_0501" shows a gamepad-shaped controller with a Wii logo front and center.

The "classic" file name suggests that the controller will be used for classic Nintendo games that use a traditional gamepad interface.

The controller is reminiscent of a Super Nintendo gamepad with its oval shape, D pad, and x, y, a, and b buttons set in a familiar diamond formation. The controller also features what appear to be four buttons along the top of the controller. The classic controller face also has two analog sticks, which are necessary to maintain GameCube compatibility.

For everyone complaining about the cord, it would seem to me that this controller is plugged into the expansion port at the bottom on the "Wiimote", just like the analog stick attachment.

I can't say that I don't love Nintendo cuz i do but i don't see how the controller could be used for N64 games gust look at it no C buttons come on Nintendo. On the other hand it look totally awesome you gotta love the I-pod look.

RuminaX, I think the guy above was referring to the fact that the N64 pad came before the PS analog variety... Which is true as it was the first console with analog control. So he is right, Sony followed Nintendo's lead in that respect.

Good greif everyone complains about Sony ripping off Nintendo's motion sensors but the button placement on this thing is like a dualshock controller. They just ditched the handle grips. At anyrate I don't care because I like both companies I just can't stand how people can be so biast and hypocritical. One person above even goes so far as to say "Sony ripped off Nintendo's analog stick" when Nintendo didn't even make the thing in the first place. People should really do some research into the origins of some things before they start making stupid claims for their precious company. Just face it people, neither company is ripping eachother off they are just taking the logical steps forward in advancing our gaming experience. I happen to slightly prefer Sony but even if Nintendo went ahead and made a dualshock replica and a ripoff of Sony's most popular games I wouldn't care because in the end all that does is raise the bar and we win because of it. So next time you see something as a ripoff just remember, your favorite company is going to try that much harder to keep your loyalty because of it.

grnidbandit, Try playing a FPS game using the dual shock and then make that statement. It a truly horrible controller for FPSs and Racers. Microsoft have the right idea with their offset analog sticks. I can't believe Sony have messed up again. They could have at least ergonomically tweaked the dual shock design by indenting the sticks so your thumbs don't slip off. Oh, and this looks like a nice design, other than the stick placement.... It sure is purdy to look at though!

It's paddle is absurdly large but nonetheless it's a nice alternative to the magic stick thing.

I wonder what's going to actually be packed in the box, though. Will it just be the remote, or is Nintendo going to include the nunchaku and the classic controller as well? And how many? Here's my dream: two complete controller sets AND Super Mario Galaxy packed in with the Wii. Now THAT would be old school!

Wish those analogs were further apart -- that's a main problem I have with the parallel analogs on the dual-shock. Anyway, SNES had the best controller ever, so they're working off the best.

"Sony ripped off the Wiimote blah blah blah But look now! They are ripping of the dual shock 2 blah blah blah" Ummmm. How are they ripping off the PS@, is Sony was ripping off of Nintendo's idea of the analog stick in the first place.

Nice, clean-looking controller. Probably shaped nicely too, knowing Nintendo, so that it can be held for hours without fatigue unlike the flat SNES controller [here's hoping, anyway] :) WTG, Nintendo!

This controller probably is your shell. Even for new games, if the developer doesn't want to use the new remote, they can probably just use this. The big question...will 1 or 2 come in the box?! I would love to see a game company get back to providing what you need in 1 package. Especially if this is for the "whole family" give us all the controllers at the start for the "whole family".

Guess my SNES style GC pad is gonna become obsolete. Also, I wouldn't exactly say its copying the PS2's Dual Shock as all it is is 2 joysticks placed closer to each other. This is understandable, I mean have you ever tried to play 2D games using the GC's D-pad, it was murder for the thumb. Also, if your gonna say Nintendo has copied Sony, then its no different to saying that Sony copied Panasonic in making wide-screen TVs, or that Creative copied Apple in making portable Hard drive music players, or ATI copied nVidia in making certain types of Graphics Cards. In addition, I don't feel that the PS3's tilt-motion controller is a copy of the the Wii controller, as I used a Microsoft joypad with the same tilt sensor built in back before the PS3, Wii & XBOX 360 were even announced. Companies will always come out with new ideas and their rivals will always try to counter them. Sometimes a company comes up with an idea thats so good, the other has no choice but to utilise the same idea. Its called progress and its what advances the consumer market.

Like the controller. At least it isn't a remote, but the attachments for it make up for it of course.

heh, abelmaestro, consider it pay back for everything Sony has copied from Nintendo. Aside from the analog stick placement the thing is basically a SNES controller.

Dig the retro look. Unlike Sony throwing things together at the last minute it is nice to see that Nintendo has really thought this through.

It's hilarious that people are saying it looks like a dual shock... It's basically a SNES controller in a new colour with two analog sticks...the concave/convex buttons are even back!!
