E3 06: Nintendo reveals Wii classic controller

Nintendo gives the Wii a "classic" gamepad for virtual console games.

Nintendo included an image of a new Wii controller hidden within a package of hardware screenshots available for download on the Nintendo press site. The image titled "Wii_classic_0501" shows a gamepad-shaped controller with a Wii logo front and center.

The "classic" file name suggests that the controller will be used for classic Nintendo games that use a traditional gamepad interface.

The controller is reminiscent of a Super Nintendo gamepad with its oval shape, D pad, and x, y, a, and b buttons set in a familiar diamond formation. The controller also features what appear to be four buttons along the top of the controller. The classic controller face also has two analog sticks, which are necessary to maintain GameCube compatibility.

mgsseries4life yeah like always, Nintendo is so old school man. but wtv if u like it just go for it. but why did they copy the PS2's controller? R and L PS2s Posted May 12, 2006 7:42 pm PT bottons are in the same exact place. ohh maybe they want to get Sony back. My god shut up, all of your facts are wrong. Nintendo had a L and R button the the Snes controller, way before sony, I'm not saying they had the first L or R buttons, that I'm not sure of, but they did beat sony, stop being a raving fanboy for a second and research something.

Just hope it's still about the same size as the snes controller but maybe a little heavier as I always found the snes controller too light.

I'm a analog fan, so I'm disappointed a bit that it uses a d-pad as the main. I know it will be better than the 360's because that d-pad is a d-pancake. Moving one direction means you have to shift the whole disk. However, what makes this BETTER than the DS1-3 is that the joysticks have niches which means you know EXACTLY where up, down, left, right are, instead of guessing with the DS1-3 controllers. And for the c-buttons, you use the joystick, obviously. It's great Nintendo gives us a choice to play games, but I wonder if this will be bundled with the unit or if it must be purchased. I find it interesting how strong an emotion one picture brings when it's not even about gameplay.

We should be able to plug a Gamecube controller in if we want, right? This is great for NES/SNES, but a no-go for N64/Cube. Let's run down an N64 controller: D-Pad: Check A-Stick: Check L & R: Check A & B: Check C buttons: Uh-oh, none! Z Button: None Like I said, great for S/NES, not so much for N64. Of course, the Cube controller is no good for N64 either. There must be another controller/shell in the works. It could be that L2 & R2 can act as Z, and the second stick as C (as with the Gamecube). Before you flame, I'm not hating on it, I'm just saying it's not the whole solution. 2 out of 4 ain't bad, though.

First, who cares if one console "owns" another? That's not what consoles are about. If they are about that to you, then you need a life. You should feel lucky you even own a console. Second, why doesn't the controller look more like the cube controller? That's why they have it anyway is to be backward compatible with the cube to start with, right? Nintendo is otherwize looking really good at E3. To bad they're still serious about that name. That's going to hold them back otherwize.

james_n says: ummm I might be mistaken but didn't Sega Saturn have analogue first with that controller for Nights? It was round with two little handles at the bottom. _____________________________________________________________ I'm not quite sure on this, but I am almost certain that Saturn analog pad came after N64 was realised. One thing I remember is that Saturn analog came out a few months later than NiGHTS.

Oxygen- Oxygen- Everyone makes a big deal when Sony copies the Wiimote but no one makes a big deal when Nintendo copies Xbox's Home button _____________________________________________________________ Yeah! And a worthless home button and tilting/montion sensivity are so much alike! On a separate note: maybe they kinda ripped off Sony with the dual analog esque, but for the Dual Shock that analog placement is just stupid... or it's just me that feels that the analog should be in the MAIN position? For the Wii, it might work having the D-Pad for the main position, since we'd play mostly SNes and Genesis games with this controller anyway

mickeyuk- I for one had no problems playing a FPS or racing game on the Ps2 so i dont know what your talking about. People usually prefer to play their FPS on a PC and people would say the best way to play a racer is to play with a steering wheel. Second the new ps3 controller is still a prototype and not the final so maybe sony will incorperate something on the analog sticks where your thumbs or finger wont be slipping off

Nintendo should probably add 2 more buttons for the emulated sega games. Some might require 6 instead of 4......unless they are tweaked for the virtual console?

Pretty pretty. Should play every 8/16/32-bit system they're re-releasing titles for. Reckon they'll make us pony up for another controller for N64 and Cube? Adapter plugs would be nice. But seriously I can't see wanting to play RE4 or Mario Sunshine on the Wii when I've already got a GC/Wavebird. Rather save disk space for last-last(-last) generation titles.

"Who cares ??? PS3 will own Nintendo........ " Yeah right! Things just keep getting better and better for Nintendo. They certainlly have learned from the mistakes of the GameCube. I'm excited to play all the games that I missed and all of my favorites from the past. Why pay $600 for a PS3 that plays the same games the $300 XBOX plays?? The NIntendo will be even cheaper! I can't wait!

I also don't see how it'll play N64. And will it be enjoyable to use that controller for NES, SNES ,and GC? We'll see what happens.

The classic controller is, basicly, the PS3 controller, but with rumble and motion sensetivity, as well as tilt sensetivity. And it looks like a SNES controller. Which is cool.

The shoulder buttons in the middle may look hard to reach but think about the size of the controller (it's tiny) you can tell because the D-pad looks massive.

I love how fanboys can jsut twist anything into ammo in their system war. I think even Sony would acknowledge that Nintendo are the innovators of the industry (the way Microsoft did), but that Sony knows how to market their items, as of right now, to sell to the masses better. If you look at it though, (slightly entering the fanboy battle), Sony has had a history of copying Nintendo in terms of hardware... the rumble feature the standard use of an analog stick now, the wii controller and most importantly The SNES controller was the frame of the Sony dualshock controller. I can't believe how many people do not see that the original PS controller and the SNES controlelr were essentially the same in button layout and design. What Sony did, that any smart compay would do, was took the standard, added needed improvements, in this case...grips, more buttons (on the shoulders).
