Dying Light Reaches 4.5 Million Users, Dev Teases Future Plans

"Obviously, we're also thinking about how to think about the sequel, what should happen there."

Dead Island developer Techland's open-world zombie game Dying Light has now reached 4.5 million unique users, up from 3.2 million back in March. This number isn't the same as sales, however.

Actual sales are "slightly less," Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka told Eurogamer.

No Caption Provided

"Sales [we] count later--we need time to calculate the sales and returns and so on. Unique users means all the unique users we calculated on the server playing the game for significant number of time," he added. "Sales might be slightly less because that includes also secondary sales."

Techland has supported Dying Light with a few pieces of DLC so far, but is a full-blown expansion in the works? "We are thinking about maybe something really of bigger scope," Marchewka teased. Asked if he was referring to an expansion, he said with a smile, "I don't know if I can say that. We'll see, we don't know that yet."

Marchewka also suggested that plans are underway for Dying Light 2.

"Obviously, we're also thinking about how to think about the sequel, what should happen there," he said. "So a lot of talk going on right now."

Also in the interview, Marchewka said Techland's focus on the Dying Light series is why the studio made the decision to put its co-op action game Hellraid on hold. This game is definitely not canceled, however.

"Dying Light--every one of our games--had this problem," Marchewka said. "We always wanted to create something bigger than we should. Then we cut it in half and still it's bigger than it should [be]!"

"It's definitely not dead," he added. "It's just we want to make sure the needs from our Dying Light players are satisfied as quickly as possible and we needed some resources for that."

So how many copies has the game sold? I still want to play this game, but only from a cheap steam sale. for me very few games are actually worth the full 50/60 dollar price on pc.

Dying Light was a lot of fun but the story was lacking.

@edwardnygma: Yeah, I felt the story got in the way more than anything. But the gameplay made up for it, thankfully.

I know they are making another Lords of the Fallen, and I believe that was developed in Poland as well. What I can't seem to figure out is that the developer of that game said that it would be profitable at 200k sold. Doesn't Poland use the Euro as it's currency ? They must have just sailed a tight ship from the get go.

That being said - - I just got around to playing Dying Light, and it is better than I thought it would be. On the console it is the 2nd best looking game imo (Witcher #1), and the story and focus is improved over the Dead Island games. Only gripe I have with it is the characters in the game who have Islamic sounding names (also most westerners as well) have Polish accents. I like in the game how you don't lose XP at night when you die and that gives you incentive to run around in the dark and explore, even when the game is a lot more difficult then. The quest where you escort the survivor who thinks he is infected with lycanthropy is a trip.

@AzureBonds76: Poland doesn't use the Euro, they have their own currency, the " złoty". Anyway, DL didn't have Polish voice-actors. Those accents were supposed to be vaguely Middle-Eastern.

@remoticons: Lolwat. If a bad game has a good story it's still a bad game. If a good game has a good story it's an amazing game. But if a good game has a bad story it's a bad game? Your logic is severely flawed.

@vibroknife@remoticons: His logic is sound. He didn't say the game was bad, just the story, which is accurate. Still a great game technically/mechanically regardless.

Dying Light was definitely a refreshing and pleasant surprise. Why is it that two of the best Next Gen games came from Polish studios?

Keep up the good work and keep EA and Ubisoft away from Poland.

@Tiwill44: they're asking them to start making a sequel, knownig it'll likely be 2-3 years by the time it drops. While everyone loves new ip's....sequels to great games can be just as good

I had an absolute blast with Dying Light. It was definitely a cut above the usual. I kind of hope they play it a little safe with the next one, though. Just give a little more enemy variety, more weapons (plus some gun mods), a bigger map, and more abilities. Oh, and like everyone else says, up the difficulty a bit.

Survivor Mode, please. And lets really up the difficulty and turn down the stupid abilities that make the Dying light from easy to a total joke. Of course, the coop to go with it.

Items, well.. the eye-candy stats scaling could be thrown out. Guns need mods, and make ammo scarce. If items aren't balanced then the game isn't.

Thoughts for a sequel:

Make different playable characters like Dying Light was originally going to have. If you're going to make a game with different outfits, make it so you can actually see your character. There is no possible way to see your character except for occasionally the legs when you do a dive kick, so the only purpose they serve is online play. Make more diverse settings. Having different areas that you could only access later was good, but make them more diverse. Those were both city-ish. Make more areas as well. The total map was big, but there are games with bigger maps so I know you can do it. Don't have stuff break. It's annoying and tedious and doesn't really do any good.

Other than that I don't know. I thought the gameplay was really enjoyable and satisfying and I liked the skill tree system how it was. This is a really fun game and I'm looking forward to a sequel!

Nice! Dying Light was surprisingly fantastic, heck it ended up being one of my favorite games of this year so far let alone one of my fave zombie games.

@Karmazyn: It took me 45 hours to beat, so yeah it's pretty lengthy if you do all the side missions, etc. Fantastic game. Playing Bloodborne now so Witcher 3 will have to wait.

If they do make a sequel, I hope they put more thought into the crafting and inventory. By the back half of that game was scrolling through a massiveass list of junk I would never use and recipes that were way outdated to get to the items/crafting options I wanted.

Also? Make some areas that aren't just more city. A little more diversity in the game world would be nice.

Have they patched out / disabled the narrated loading screens yet? I couldn't stand listening to that guy one more time, so I deleted the game.

AKA, "How to go from beloved voice actor to nails on a chalk board: Do voice-overs for loading screens."

...and don't get me started about multiplayer's utter lack of stability... To be honest, I'm sure they patched that at some point, but after the first two weeks of dropped sessions (while every other game & platform was rock-solid on my network) that was the ACTUAL reason I deleted the game. Maybe I'll reinstall it someday... maybe not. But after the horrifically buggy launches of THREE Techland games (with the first two Dead Islands still quite glitchy), you can certainly bet I'll never preorder anything from them again.

It was pretty good if it didn't run like ass on PC, not sure if they fixed it. I can get Witcher 3 to ultra at stable 30fps, couldn't even hold that with all the shadows turned off from the files and everything at lowest in DL

@Stebsis: Dying Light ran great on PC. All you had to do was turn the Draw Distance slider down to the minimum. It barely made a difference to the visuals, and gave you your frames back. Not even a great GPU could deal with that setting turned up. Running from launch on a GTX 770.

Dying Light was a good game for starting the current-gen only game when launch back in January 2015 with little to no problems at launch and I still play Dying Light from time to time. Dying Light 2 please Techland.

And I doubt Dead Island 2 from Deep Silver will surpassed Dying Light.
