Dying Light Brings Back Its Left 4 Dead 2 Crossover Mode

Dying Light developer Techland is bringing back its Left 4 Dead crossover event for Halloween this year. Dying Light x Left 4 Dead 2 is available to play now until October 29 on PC for all Dying Light owners. Console owners will need to wait a few weeks longer for the DLC to hit PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The natural marriage between the two zombie-slaying games first appeared a year ago when Techland revived Valve's dormant series for a special crossover event. Now it's back, giving you another chance to play the limited time Viral Rush event and don the beret of Left 4 Dead 2's William "Bill" Overbeck.

The wily fan-favourite Vietnam vet can wield a double-barreled shotgun and has access to incendiary ammo if you prefer your zombie's extra crispy. Gnome Chompsky also makes an appearance as a two-handed melee weapon, ensuring that the iconic garden gnome is more useful here than he ever was in Left 4 Dead 2.

The Viral Rush event brings a tinge of Left 4 Dead's gameplay experience to Dying Light, tasking you with mowing down a never-ending horde of the living dead on the fictional city streets of Harran. The challenging game mode simply asks that you survive for as long as you can.

Techland continues to support Dying Light seven years after it launched. Earlier this year, the studio revived one of its old titles as DLC with the Hellraid add-on, and new content like this Left 4 Dead crossover are keeping the game alive.

The status of Dying Light 2 is still up in the air, however, as the sequel currently has no release date. Originally scheduled for release sometime in Spring 2020, the game was delayed indefinitely earlier this year, with Techland writing, "We need more development time to fulfill our vision." Since then, Techland has cut ties with freelance writer Chris Avellone after he was accused of sexual assault and harassment by multiple women.

As for Left 4 Dead 2, Valve's popular game has seen a resurgence over the past few weeks. The company released The Last Stand in September, a community-created update for the 11-year-old game that resulted in the co-op shooter amassing over 60,000 concurrent players on Steam. It's not too surprising either considering the scale of the update, adding 26 new maps, four new scavenge arenas, new melee weapons, 30 new achievements, and a new ending for the campaign.
