DS goes old school with Atari Retro Classics
Pong, Missile Command, Asteroids, and other coin-op classics are getting a new life and a new look on Nintendo's portable.
Nintendo's hi-tech handheld features touch-screen capability, wireless support, and a revolutionary dual-screen system. Add a touch of time travel to that list as Atari has announced that Atari Retro Classics, a compilation of some of the best-known coin-op classics from the days of arcades, is coming to the DS.
The title is being developed by Los Angeles-based Taniko and is scheduled for release on March 15.
Though the games will all be playable in their original low-tech graphics, each title is getting made over in a "tagged" mode. This updated take on nostalgic classics will feature new graphics from some of the most popular graffiti artists in the country, including REAS, Delta, and Obey Giant.
The old-school classics will also get a taste of the new school by incorporating many of the DS's features: Gamers will use the touch screen, play with up to three other wirelessly, and even play head-to-head with a friend on the same DS.
The lineup of games is as follows: Pong, Missile Command, Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Tempest, Warlords, Gravitar, Lunar Lander, and Sprint.
GameSpot will have more on the title as information becomes available.
