Driveclub's Long-Awaited Free PS Plus Version Now Out [Update 2]

Try out a chunk of Driveclub now.

Update 2: The Driveclub Twitter account has posted a message saying, "Store update today with the Driveclub PS+ Edition was premature. The servers aren't ready yet, so it's been removed while we get them ready." There's still no ETA for exactly when it will return.

Update: It appears the Plus Edition went live earlier than intended, as the PlayStation Store page has been taken down. We'll keep an eye on its status and update you with anything more we learn.

Original Story: Following what feels like countless delays, the free PlayStation Plus Edition of PS4 racing game Driveclub is now available on the PlayStation Store.

Driveclub: PlayStation Plus Edition offers a mix of single- and multiplayer content. According to the PSN listing, it offers "every Driveclub feature," including "online multiplayer matches and challenges, to offline solo racing, Tour events, customization, replays, Photo Mode, and more." It also contains all 13 of India's tracks, 15 cars, and 27 trophies, including the Platinum.

As the name suggests, you'll need a PlayStation Plus subscription in order to download and play this free version of the game. Upgrading to the full version gets you 40+ additional cars and five other locations (comprising 65 total tracks).

Driveclub and its accompanying Plus Edition were originally slated to be out alongside the PS4 back in 2013. They ended up being pushed back almost a full year, to October 2014. When the full game launched with serious issues, the Plus Edition's release was delayed indefinitely.

Despite the extended wait, Sony repeatedly insisted that this version hadn't been canceled. When developer Evolution Studios was hit with layoffs in March, Sony claimed it would "now focus on Driveclub as a service going forward, in particular, the important launch of the PS Plus Edition." Earlier this month, director Paul Rustchynsky said the Plus Edition was "in the final stages of development."

Provided you have a Plus subscription, you can download Driveclub here.

Man i will just wait for the NFS game in Novemeber, this is BS, they won't even give you the whole version after all this waiting ? What a waste of space. Booooo !

@Supasang: What did you expect from a demo?

Avatar image for dante9006

@gokartmozart89: Demos don't let you get Trophies. It's just the full game with only 10% unlocked.

Avatar image for gokartmozart89

@dante9006: I think you need to play more demos or try googling. This isn't the first to offer achievements/trophies.

And what do you think a demo is? It's a fraction of the game, regardless of trophies being offered. You can't unlock all the trophies without the full game. Trophies are just another aspect that you're only getting a fraction of. Demos predate trophies.

At this point I would agree with the assessment that the full game should be made available for free, and the Season Pass could still be bought separately for whoever wanted it.

For myself, I enjoy the game quite a bit.

So by "edition" they mean "fancy demo"? I was hoping for a full game and not some silly trial.

LOL.

They should just make full Driveclub free game of the month for Christmas (if not earlier) and completely skip this crippled version, after all the crap they have fed customers with.

With that being said... for those who haven't played game yet, it is quite nice, actually. Rough start, but has been really sweet for some time now. I'm finding it quite enjoyable, even if I prefer more sim-tistic games like GT and Forza. I'm still playing it parallel to Project Cars - they are different enough not to compete with each other, really.

I just wonder...if the PS4 was slightly inferior to the X1...would it still sell that great with their games line up?

Performance alone doesn't seem to be deciding factor when it comes to consoles. I think it would sell good - maybe not this good but still good - if it was cheaper, regardless inferiority.

As in PS1 vs. N64

or PS2 vs. Xbox

Or Wii vs. both X360 and PS3

When it comes to consoles, it looks like price sells better than performance potential. Good games don't hurt either... but I don't think that PS4 lineup is worst than XBO. They are each dominant in some genres and inferior in others. It's really down to personal taste.

Avatar image for MigGui

@sladakrobot: it wouldn't, and if nothing changes, soon it won't. amazingly, MS is killing sony in the games department right now, which is a first in a decade and half of rivalry

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@sladakrobot: Hell no. If they keep up with this lack of games many people will be getting Xbox One's for Christmas, me included.

Just look at Xbox 360. It was the weaker console hardware wise, but it was cheaper and the game line up was better for years. Then Microsoft got lazy and even though the 360 was still cheaper than the PS3 people started buying PS3s for the better exclusives later on and eventually overtook 360 at the last moment.

Games dictate sales. Other factors make a difference but it is ultimately games that drive people. I mean take my brothers they basically sit and play Fifa year in year out, they have had one console the entire last generation and haven't upgraded yet because Fifa is the only game they need and it is on both.

Avatar image for putaspongeon
PutASpongeOn

@Dannystaples14: Actually the ps3 had weaker games at first sincec the hardware was hard to develop for, ps3 had some quality hidden gems from the gate like folklore and stuff, developers got used to the architecture though of the ps3 and so it showed it's superior power to the xbox 360 and that was one of the deciding factors.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@putaspongeon: What? What has hardware got to do with a good game? The PS1 was about 1% the power of the PS3 and it had awesome games.

Being harder to make doesn't make the stories and the games they make somehow worse. The only difference between PS3 and 360 at the start of the gen was the PS3 didn't perform quite as smoothly.

The fact the initial exclusive games were sh*t was all on the developers.

Avatar image for putaspongeon
PutASpongeOn

@Dannystaples14: Games running better on xbox 360 means xbox 360 sold more consoles because ps3 was foreign architecture and didn't look as good in the beginning, you're literally just bitching to avoid the facts.

There was a HUGE difference between the ps3 and xbox 360 at release.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@putaspongeon: Except people didn't buy 360s because the frames were slightly better! I mean come on the performance difference wasn't that huge. It basically amounted to PS3 having some texture pop-in and a few frame rate drops on certain badly optimised games. It wasn't like every game had massive issues.

People bought Xbox's for games like Gears and Halo. I mean the extra year probably didn't help that. People bought 360s, realised that PS3 had very little to offer at the start and so just stayed with 360 for the multiplatform games as well.

It took a long time for people to start filtering back over to Sony as a result.

An exclusive at a time Sony eventually managed to sell more than Microsoft but only in the last year or so of the gen did they finally manage it.

Considering what a monster PS2 was there is zero excuse for why Sony didn't wipe the floor with Microsoft yet again. But they didn't. They floundered and fish tailed the entire gen and then pipped them at the photo finish.

That's because no one knew what to do with CELL SPEs, so early PS3 games boiled down to single CPU core and inferior GPU... compared to 3 CPU cores and more advanced GPU on X360 side.

It is not to say that PS3 didn't have good games, but really only exclusives were pushing hardware in right direction, at least in the first few years.

Thinking of my favorite early exclusives - Resistance: Fall of Man, Ridge Racer 7, MotorStorm, Formula One Championship Edition, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Rachet & Klank: Tools of Destruction... all released before the end of 2007... were great for that time.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@nikon133: Those games were shit even for that time. Which is why Xbox 360 was selling more.

The first Uncharted put me off the series it was so shit. Just one massive murder simulator. The FIRST thing you do in the game the first time you get control of Drake is pick up a handgun and start slaughtering pirates and then proceed down one long and dreary path slaughtering several thousand more. I think I killed more people in that linear game than I killed in total in GTA V.

It wasn't until the end that the games started actually being good. Both in performance and in quality of the games themselves. Hell I only got a PS3 last year and I still don't think it was worth the cost of the console.

The CELL was bad but nothing excuses how sh*t the games were on top of it. Nothing.

Avatar image for nikon133

@Dannystaples14: That's just your opinion, man. I doubt you have actually played them all, but even if you did. I enjoyed all of them, they were among the best games on any platform I have played at their respective time.

First level of Uncharted was tutorial to introduce gamers to game mechanics - taking cover, using gun, melee. Rest of the game, true - it had a lot of shooting... but so did Gears, Halo... make your pick. At least Uncharted was breaking shooting sprees with platforming levels, some puzzles and interesting story for people who like Indy Jones movies.

Your problem might be that you only got PS3 last year and you were comparing old games to what was available last year. I guess they wouldn't look too flashy judging by 2014 standards... Have you played those games back in 2007, you'd probably have different impressions.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@nikon133: Yeah first level of Uncharted was tutorial but the rest of the game played out in EXACTLY the same way only in a different location. Just a long series of killboxes with cut scenes in between.

Halo and Gears were SUPPOSED to have loads of shooting. Drake is SUPPOSED to be a treasure hunter. Yet for 90% of the game he is unloading clips into mercenaries. Insultingly easy puzzles, tedious platforming levels and mindless killing in painfully easy to see kill boxes.

At least in Halo and Gears you were supposed to be killing aliens left right and centre that was the main focus of the game. Fight the Locust, fight the Covenant and Flood. They are science fiction games. Uncharted isn't, it is supposed to be set in a realistic setting.

I mean at one point in Drake's Fortune you are walking along and you can see in the distance a series of walls placed parallel to one another and a machine gun at one end. "Ohhh I wonder what is going to happen next?!" sure enough you cross the invisible line on the floor and all the mercenaries start crawling out of the woodwork again. It was so stupid.

One of the tests of a great game as opposed to merely a good game is if it stands the test of time. I played most PS3 exclusives last year and they were pretty dreadful. Except for TLOU, Beyond Two Souls, Heavy Rain, Demon Souls. Two of which were released very near the end of last gen.

I could still play Halo 1 - 4 today or Gears 1 - 3 today because they are grounded and actually feel like you are doing what the game wanted you to do in the first place. Drake murders tonnes of people in the gameplay and then sits having a joke in the cut scenes like it never happened.

Avatar image for nikon133
nikon133

I don't really care what games are supposed to be. I care what they are. I approach every game with open mind and what eventually maters is am I enjoying it or not. I like genre-benders, mixing of different sub-elements and what not... as long as I find results fun.

Gears, enjoyable as it was, was just a shooter. Uncharted brought in some refreshment with puzzles and platforming beside shooting, and I liked it for that. The story also gave me something I was missing from 1st and 3rd Indy flick - an adventure loosely based on real history and myth. Look, there isn't a game that will please everyone. If you found Uncharted non-shooting elements boring, that's fine. I enjoyed them.

I wouldn't say that Drake was supposed to be realistic. Yes it happens on present Earth, but you have Maya curse and zombies in first game, Shambala and immortal blue supperhumans in 2nd one, and place called Atlantis of the sands in 3rd one... hardly a reality. It is not science, but fiction surely it is.

Speaking of which, I see Gears as fiction, but not necessarily as science. Aliens and futuristic setup do not guarantee "science" in any game/story/movie. I'm a bit of an old school here, but SF, in my mind, is term reserved for something that came from minds of likes of Arthur Clark and Isaac Asimov... not from Star Wars or Gears. I see all the games we are mentioning here as different sub-genres of Fiction, but not Science Fiction. Which is good. Game based on Space Odyssey or Rendezvous With Rama would be a bore-fest, likely.

Rest is, as I said, matter of personal preference. I played 1st Gears and first two Halos, but was not really motivated to continue with either. I did play all 3 Uncharted and am craving for 4th one. God of War, for example, I got bored mid-way through the last one, never finished it, and not really looking for the next release. Also I bought Heavy Rain but never really got into it. Just... wasn't... my... thing.

Out of curiosity: why did you get PS3 so late in it's life?

@Dannystaples14:

Develope a game for the PS3 was more difficult than develope it for the 360 for the cell architecture, thats why multiplatform games were programmed for the 360 first and then ported to the PS3, thats why, again, 360 versions look better and run smoother than PS3 versions.

But the PS3 was more powerful, first party developers dedicated more time to program on it taking advantage of that power, thats why PS3 exclusivities were incredible, seeing MGS4 and GOW 3 its proof of that, but the rest of companies decide took the easy way (and cheaper also) and took the 360 as their native platform, thats all.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@KiriharaZro: I'm not talking about them running smoother, I'm talking about the games being shit just by themselves.

CELL was bad but that wasn't an excuse for the terrible story telling from Playstation exclusives at the start. Man they produced some garbage.

PS3 exclusives were incredible at the end of the generation sure. They sure as hell weren't at the start though, which is the point. The shitty game line up on PS3 at the start was why 360 was spanking it all over the high streets of the world for about three years.

They were f*cking dreadful at the start. I mean Resistance Fall of Man? Jesus I don't think I've ever played a more generic boring ass shooter in my life and I've played plenty of shooters. Even the first Uncharted wasn't that great.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@KiriharaZro: Perfect Dark was a launch title. Launch titles are always crap, that is pretty much a given. PS3 was still producing launch quality games a few years after launch as well.

Avatar image for KiriharaZro
KiriharaZro

@Dannystaples14:

Curious, Resistance Fall of Man was also a launch game but you dont care because you're a fanboy thats all. For you the 360 is god, thats fine, but in exclusive games PS3 was better.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@KiriharaZro: No its because it was a launch title so it is pretty much a given that it sucks. I mean the launch games this gen sucked as well. It is always the same. Just a bunch of rushed out trash to make people buy a console sooner.

I don't think 360 is god, I just don't like PS3. There is a difference. I think it was a half arsed console.

What with the CELL, shitty PSN, the terrible controller, the games that didn't show up till several years in, the clunky as f*ck store and user interface, the fact I think it was the ugliest console to ever be created and it was really expensive on top of all that, there aren't many redeeming qualities for me. Cheap Blu-ray player is one good thing that springs to mind.

I looked into buying a PS3 many times last gen and every time decided I didn't want it.

Not something I can say about the PS4 by the way. That is a great console but I think Sony missed the train on PS3 and took a knock to the head running after it. Sony is starting to recover now but that doesn't excuse it for the PS3. The whole of Sony has been having problems for years, PS3 was just a victim of their incompetence.
