Drake Impressions

We take a quick look at Majesco's new comic-book-style action shooter.

Majesco gave us a look at its new comic-book-style action game Drake today. The game is being developed for the Xbox and PC, and it features an undead antihero named Drake who's out for revenge. The game's developer describes Drake as a Batman-style comic book adventure influenced by the John Woo oeuvre and married to elements of The Matrix. Based on what we saw, this is a pretty apt description.

The John Woo aspect of Drake comes from the fact that your character is constantly wielding two weapons. You can switch weapons for each hand independently--for instance, you might have an MP5 in your right hand and a shotgun in your left. You can auto-aim and fire your two weapons independently, too. In a nod to The Matrix, you can slow the action down so you can more easily pull off snazzy moves while the bullets are flying. Furthermore, you can also run horizontally across walls and even jump from wall to wall if you're dexterous enough.

It looks like Drake is shaping up to be a pretty solid and stylish action game. The graphics use a technique that is similar to cel shading but is more reactive to the environment, and this further enhances the comic book feel. An actual comic book will also be released alongside the game. Stay tuned for more on Drake.
