Dragon Quest IX exclusive to DS

[UPDATE] Square Enix announces next installment of series will be strictly portable on Nintendo's handheld; game is subtitled Guard of the Starry Night.

The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.
The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.

Though not exactly a household name for gamers here in the United States, the Dragon Quest series is one of the most popular gaming franchises in Japan. The release of Dragon Quest VIII in Japan was met with the same frenzy that typically accompanies the release of the latest edition of another Square Enix franchise, Final Fantasy.

Square Enix released Dragon Quest VIII on the PlayStation 2, which was a great boon for Sony. However, it appears as though the benefactor of Dragon Quest IX will be one of Sony's rivals. Forbes reports that Dragon Quest IX has been announced as an exclusive for the Nintendo DS.

Some analysts think this could be a big blow against Sony because the Dragon Quest franchise is considered a top-tier franchise and has sold more than 41 million copies worldwide. Hiroshi Kamide, analyst at KBC Securities, said the decision to put Dragon Quest IX exclusively on the DS "was rather unexpected, so it's not a huge vote of confidence for the PlayStation 3," reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Another look at the lead character's backside.
Another look at the lead character's backside.

Square is also preparing a Dragon Quest game for the Wii, due early next year, and recently released Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, a series spin-off, for the DS.

[UPDATE] Square Enix has confirmed that the DS Dragon Quest is in development, and that it is tentatively called Dragon Quest IX: Guard of the Starry Night. The game will be more action-oriented than previous Dragon Quest games, and battles will "take place on the field." There will also be support for four-player multiplayer, presumably through the DS's Wi-Fi capabilities. DQIX is currently scheduled for release in Japan in 2007; no US release window was given.

Square Enix also reconfirmed that the Dragon Quest Wii title, Dragon Quest Swords: Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, will be released in spring 2007.

But that's not the last of Dragon Quest news. Another DQ game, Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road, is headed to Japanese arcades and is a "card-battle game where players battle monsters in a coliseum to win real-life cards with monster data imprinted on them."

"Mobius76 Does anyone see a trend here? I really think that many publishers out there are growing tired of escalating development costs associated with the next-generation consoles. Namco claims that they need to sell 500,000 units of a given game to break even, which is not a small figure. Enter Nintendo. They have a huge success in the DS, with a massive installed user base. The development costs are much lower than a console, of course it's going to be attractive to publishers. They like to release software for systems with the largest user base, and in Japan the DS rules the roost. ... A lot of people attack the Wii as gimmicky, but all one needs to do is look at what the games industry is saying. Publishers are tired of these massive budgets that the HD generation of gaming requires. They aren't seeing the profits they once did, so they're turning to avenues like downloadable content and in-game advertising. That's what makes the DS (and the Wii, which follows the same gaming "formula") such an attractive platform. Low development costs, high user base.. it adds up to more profit. Expect to see more of this kind of thing in the future. " I have nothing more to add to that, but it's so dead on that it needs to be up on this board at least twice. Kudos, man. I'm glad other people are seeing it too.

This makes all the sense in the world, millions ontop of millions of japanese gamers own the DS and millions more each quater buy a DS which means it's going to sell far more copies then if it was released on any other system. Development cost down as far as you can go as well as almost a 100% chance to make your return on investment 50 fold. This is the first really smart choice a developer has made in a long time.

I'm looking forward to DQ 9 on the DS. I am very intrigued by the prospect of multi-player. But the DQ franchise has traditionally been single-player only, so I hope the addition of multi-player doesn't ruin it. It's also unlikely that this announcement means all future installments will be on the DS. I actually fully expect DQ 10 to be on a home console. At any rate, due to the unique features and presentation of the DS, it is unlikely that DQ 9 would be ported to any other system. When DQ 9 hits, the DS will sell even more systems than they are selling right now. Can you say special Japanese collector's edition bundle pack?

Im not surprised at all. SE said they wanted to help out all three consoles. This is a perfect formula, each franchise matches its console and its target pubilc. PS3 - Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 360 - Online RPGs and Shooters Nintendo - Final Fantasy Chronicles and Dragon Quest SE is my favorite developer. With this formula I dont think they'll have a thing to worry about.

Nintendo thought it had a hard time keeping up with public demand for the DS in Japan. Just wait until this game is released.

Lol, the Forbes article said about DQ XI (11) not IX (9). I`m sure it`s a typo, or their inability to distinguish roman numers when read (cause they would`ve known what number the next sequal would be if they were more into gaming, as gs is). Still, the artcile about that is very short and seems a little far-fetched (no quotes, sources,etc.). I think that, for the time, it`s best to consider it as a rumor. But if it`s not a rumor, then I wonder why Square wants to make it a DS exclusive. I mean the main series should have stayed on the consoles (PS3, Wii or even the 360). Having the main title on a handheld discourages me a little on how great it will be (cause of the graphical performance, how big the screen is, how you control the game,etc.). I really hope Square meant to say that it will also appear on the DS, not that it will be exclusive for the DS.

Love this series and a HUGE FAN. LOVED This Series for Years. DQVIII rocked. I love the DS but why is the main title going to a handheld? I would of accepted it going to Wii but a Handheld? either way I will be getting this and can't wait. Oh and . . . IN YOUR FACE SONY HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Square belongs to actual consoles, not portables! I'm rooting for PS3 versions all the way, cuz I can't stand Microsoft and as much as I respect Nintendo, the key gamers for this kind of franchise will be the PlayStation ones. I don't care if the exclusivity is gone, but plz bring a PS3 version and for God's sake enough with big titiles brought to portable systems... it's a waste (ie: Metal Gear Solid Potable Ops)

YES!!! if it has success on DS maybe they'll port V and VI in america too! dragon quest is amazing and i'm glad i won't have to buy a $600 system to play the next one. also, the WII game they are making is Dragon Quest Swords. there's some info about it here on gamespot. it's more like action i think using the wii-mote as your sword. it's great that DQ is back on nintendo where it belongs.

Er.. people talking about it not being on Wii... "Square is also preparing a Dragon Quest game for the Wii, due early next year, and recently released Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, a series spin-off, for the DS." So it kinda is. Sorry PS fanboys. Your reign is slipping. GTA for gameboy advance and xbox. crystal chronicals for GC. Resi 4 designed for GC. Is there nothing sacred on your console any more?

Well dang, no DQ9 even for the Wii? I expected the Dragon Quest series to be released more on the home consoles than the hand helds. Sheesh, one of these days I'm gonna have to grab a DS to replace the Gameboy Advance that I sold so many years ago. Guess DQ9's just another reason to get one.

DS seems like an od choice since new Dragon Quests are usually released on home consoles. I guess in the end what really matters is that the DS is in more homes than any other system. I guess they just wanna make sure the game reaches as many people as possible. Definitely in Japan people will buy a DS just for this game if they haven't bought it already. The DQ series is that powerful.

I guess this article begs the question... What's the point of programming for anything but Nintendo? With the best console, best handheld, easiest programming, cheapest game manufacturing, largest software and hardware sales more recently.... I think Microsoft is gonna turn into the first party developer Nintendo once was while Sony sinks deeper and deeper into the Abyss. I love you Sony....stop screwing up.

Awesome, go DS. Poor Sony, developers must not recognize the potential, or they may consider the PS3 too risky.
