Dragon Quest IX exclusive to DS

[UPDATE] Square Enix announces next installment of series will be strictly portable on Nintendo's handheld; game is subtitled Guard of the Starry Night.

The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.
The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.

Though not exactly a household name for gamers here in the United States, the Dragon Quest series is one of the most popular gaming franchises in Japan. The release of Dragon Quest VIII in Japan was met with the same frenzy that typically accompanies the release of the latest edition of another Square Enix franchise, Final Fantasy.

Square Enix released Dragon Quest VIII on the PlayStation 2, which was a great boon for Sony. However, it appears as though the benefactor of Dragon Quest IX will be one of Sony's rivals. Forbes reports that Dragon Quest IX has been announced as an exclusive for the Nintendo DS.

Some analysts think this could be a big blow against Sony because the Dragon Quest franchise is considered a top-tier franchise and has sold more than 41 million copies worldwide. Hiroshi Kamide, analyst at KBC Securities, said the decision to put Dragon Quest IX exclusively on the DS "was rather unexpected, so it's not a huge vote of confidence for the PlayStation 3," reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Another look at the lead character's backside.
Another look at the lead character's backside.

Square is also preparing a Dragon Quest game for the Wii, due early next year, and recently released Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, a series spin-off, for the DS.

[UPDATE] Square Enix has confirmed that the DS Dragon Quest is in development, and that it is tentatively called Dragon Quest IX: Guard of the Starry Night. The game will be more action-oriented than previous Dragon Quest games, and battles will "take place on the field." There will also be support for four-player multiplayer, presumably through the DS's Wi-Fi capabilities. DQIX is currently scheduled for release in Japan in 2007; no US release window was given.

Square Enix also reconfirmed that the Dragon Quest Wii title, Dragon Quest Swords: Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, will be released in spring 2007.

But that's not the last of Dragon Quest news. Another DQ game, Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road, is headed to Japanese arcades and is a "card-battle game where players battle monsters in a coliseum to win real-life cards with monster data imprinted on them."

In addition to the UMD Advent Children (which is a great movie, it's just better on DVD and a TV screen) there is a FFVII prequel on the PSP (either Crisis Core or Before Crisis, the one not on PSP is on cell phones.) Even there, though, the DS one-ups the PSP with the remake of Final Fantasy III, which was huge in Japan and a success here too.

And KOSMOSEngineer/GTCzeero: Since when has the DS not had any "real" games that "serious gamers" would be interested in? Whatever happened to games like Metroid Prime: Hunters, Final Fantasy III, Rock Man ZX, or even New Super Mario Bros.? I don't like Animal Crossing and Brain Age, either, but I still love my DS.

zytokiskid: He was referring to Crisis Core. It's a PSP-exclusive prequel to FFVII. We don't know much about it yet, except that it's an action RPG where you play as Zack.

That's what I thought, DS has too many games just for toying around. At least it has a real game now.

KOSMOSEngineer You do realize that a Final Fantasy VII entry is on PSP, right? FF7 fans are gonna buy that even if they dont' have a PSP jsut to look at the box. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Are you talking about the movie Advent Children? Because Square Enix has not said that they are remaking the FFVII. Besides this is Dragon Quest we are talking about, not Final Fantasy. While Final Fantasy is big worldwide, Dragon Quest is huge in Japan. This may hurt Sony in the long run over there.

How can a DS game possibly live up to the graphics, scale and brilliance of Dragon Quest 8? The only good thing is that this means there's finally a DS game which appeals to serious gamers rather than people who don't play games.

Dragon Quest IX belongs to Square Enix, not Level-5, and Square Enix made the decision to bring DQIX to DS. Rogue Galaxy and White Knight, on the other hand, are original properties by Level-5 being published by Sony, and they're both great-looking games. Level-5 has a good relationship with Sony and Square Enix, but there's some serious bad blood between them and MS over True Fantasy Online. They have said they will never work with MS again.

So Level Five will not release Dragon Quest IX on the ps3 but they will release Rogue Galaxy on the PS2 and White Knight Story on the PS3. New intelligent properties from Level Five are better than their work on Dragon Quest XIII.

I wonder how it will work? Anyways, any RPG of the name "Dragon Quest" that is not altered too much from its original concept, is a good addition for me.

When you think about it, this move makes sense, although I had this game pegged as a Wii game. Think about it: the DS is the only sure thing going among the new generation consoles, and it's the only globally successful new system right now. The 360 has stalled dead in Japan, a couple hundred thousand will buy it for Blue Dragon and that's it. And recent reports suggest the 360 isn't really doing very well in the US either, even as overhyped as Gears of War is. It hasn't sold even as much as the Xbox did at this time in its life cycle, let alone what the PS2 had sold at that point. The PS3 has potential, but the high development costs are making developers nervous, since they feel that every PS3 game has to be a platinum game or they'll eat the losses, and the sticker prices and limited availability are going to cut into its sales. The PSP is struggling bad and losing to the DS in every territory now. MGS: Portable Ops won't save it, and the PSP is giving more bad press to Sony. The Wii has great potential to be a hit in every territory, but it's still pretty new, and doesn't have the horsepower of its competitors. That said, the Wii would have allowed for DQIX to look better than DQVIII since it is still several times more powerful than PS2. I think the Wii will win out in Japan. So that leaves the DS. Its a huge hit everywhere, especially in Japan where three-quarters of Dragon Quest's fanbase is and where DQ is probably the strongest piece of intellectual property there is, and it's very strong in the US as well. Since I can't find a Wii, I'm dividing my time between FFIII DS and FFXII. Dragon Quest IX on the DS will sell 4 million in Japan easily, and probably respectable sales in the US as well.

The dragon quest franchise is a huge susses in Japan and the nintendo DS IS the console right now in Japan so is natural for square-enix to release big games like this. I think the nintendo DS can be compared to the PS2 in terms of susses not only in japan but too in the rest of the world so they will hearn much more money.

its not a bad idea to make it for the ds, but those who dont have a ds will miss out, Just like a lot of people missing out on metal gear portable ops. But my guess is, they didnt want to go with ps3 and psp sales are down the drain, so makes sense. They've probably been working on this game for a while so its too late to be complaining.

I have no problem with the series moving from the PS2/3 but why a handheld? They finally brought DQ to full 3-d with some superb graphics with DQ8. It had some quality voice acting & an epic story (took me just a bit over 100 to finish). I don't see the same happening if they bring it to the DS. Outside of being able to do alil screen touching, the graphics will be dummied down, doubt there will be alot of voice acting in it & it won't be so epic (that's debatebable). I'd rather see it moved to the 360 or Wii to build apon the visuals & expand the nice open area that DQ8 had. IMO, quality RPG's belong on a console first, then remade on the lastest handheld in a few years.

I think moving the main game to a handheld is a bad idea. Spin-offs on handhelds are fine, but a game like DQ9 deserves proper hardware to work on. The audio alone is reason enough. DQ8 was great cuz of the amazing music and voice acting (and graphics and gameplay and story) but the audio for sure cannot be replicated on the DS. The graphics maybe, and the gameplay probably can be succesful on the DS. The length certainly wont be there though, and thus the story will probably suffer. Im not saying it will be a bad game, but it definitely would have been better on a console.

I don't understand the need to make Dragon Quest IX on a portable system, really all it means is that everything you have come to expect from a dragon quest game (and what was delivered in Dragon Quest 8 ) will be cut back and reduced in scale, I'm pretty sure the story is going to suffer because of this, as well as the graphics for sure. It's a shame really seeing as Dragon Quest 9 on the Xbox 360/ PS3 or Wii could have been a truly essential purchase, were as now, on a portable system .... it's a half hearted purchase at best.

Not to be annoying, but I think that unless the franchise starts out on a portable system, it may be a good idea to keep official games of the series on home consoles. Not to say that spin-offs shouldn't be able to venture out into other frontiers, but I would be really pissed off if they decided to put Final Fantasy XIV exclusively on the PSP instead of utilitizing everything the new generation of home systems have to offer. I think that Dragon Quest IX should be on either the PS3 or 360, leaving the Wii and portable systems for other iterations of the series.

I can see the FF core series being released for the MS sometime in the future. After all, I remember the Square Enix president not ruling it out a couple of months ago. However, I doubt those games will ever be released for Nintendo consoles, just because the core FF games always seem to push the envelope when it comes to console resources and face it, next to the Xbox 360 and the PS 3, the Wii's specs don't stand much of a chance. Side stories ala Crystal Chronicles? Sure. But no FF XIII for the Wii anytime soon, probably ever...

So you see, Fony's days are numbered. Lemmings and sheep UNITE! kinda reminds of the Wizard of Oz.....the witch the witch the witch is dead..the evil witch is deeaaad!

Also, with the release of FFXI on the 360, it's debatable how long FFXIII will be PS exclusive.

Just read the report, and it says, DragonQuest XI game will be on DS. Probably they meant DDIX, not DDXI. Anyway, it's not a bad move, but not perfect either. The best move should be release DDIX on PS2 as it has the largest install base. Not only that, PS2 users also has DD's largest fan base (right now). DD8 sold about 7 million (maybe more or less) copies world wide on a 100 million PS2 insatll base, I wonder how many copies DDXI will sell if it's indeed on DS with a 25-30 million install base.

Fraquelli PS3 - Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts ummm there hasnt been any confirmation of Kingdom Hearts staying on the PS3 soo stop with the assumptions. Im glad the DS is getting all the love, cheaper price tags, Good games, Innovative games and fun games, The DS library is growing by the minute. Its like The SNES era on handheld but with more innovative games.

Well, be smart kids, what are the most widespread consoles out right now? It doesn't matter what console it is, developers KNOW that the deciding factor is not the fanboys. its the majority, the most popular. The currently reigning console is the 360, with the wii being second, and growing fast. From a consumers point of view, I have invested in a DS and in Wii, but I am not sold on a 360 or PS3 yet(still unsure). But at a time when the super special awesome graphics come with a 500$+ price tag, and the games at 69$+, I as a consumer go for the frugality and innovation of the wii and DS. Nintendo may not have a wide base in the hardcore market, but with the DS and Wii, they have increased their market, and their profitability. Besides, I can't wait for No More Heroes.
