Dragon Quest IX exclusive to DS

[UPDATE] Square Enix announces next installment of series will be strictly portable on Nintendo's handheld; game is subtitled Guard of the Starry Night.

The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.
The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.

Though not exactly a household name for gamers here in the United States, the Dragon Quest series is one of the most popular gaming franchises in Japan. The release of Dragon Quest VIII in Japan was met with the same frenzy that typically accompanies the release of the latest edition of another Square Enix franchise, Final Fantasy.

Square Enix released Dragon Quest VIII on the PlayStation 2, which was a great boon for Sony. However, it appears as though the benefactor of Dragon Quest IX will be one of Sony's rivals. Forbes reports that Dragon Quest IX has been announced as an exclusive for the Nintendo DS.

Some analysts think this could be a big blow against Sony because the Dragon Quest franchise is considered a top-tier franchise and has sold more than 41 million copies worldwide. Hiroshi Kamide, analyst at KBC Securities, said the decision to put Dragon Quest IX exclusively on the DS "was rather unexpected, so it's not a huge vote of confidence for the PlayStation 3," reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Another look at the lead character's backside.
Another look at the lead character's backside.

Square is also preparing a Dragon Quest game for the Wii, due early next year, and recently released Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, a series spin-off, for the DS.

[UPDATE] Square Enix has confirmed that the DS Dragon Quest is in development, and that it is tentatively called Dragon Quest IX: Guard of the Starry Night. The game will be more action-oriented than previous Dragon Quest games, and battles will "take place on the field." There will also be support for four-player multiplayer, presumably through the DS's Wi-Fi capabilities. DQIX is currently scheduled for release in Japan in 2007; no US release window was given.

Square Enix also reconfirmed that the Dragon Quest Wii title, Dragon Quest Swords: Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, will be released in spring 2007.

But that's not the last of Dragon Quest news. Another DQ game, Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road, is headed to Japanese arcades and is a "card-battle game where players battle monsters in a coliseum to win real-life cards with monster data imprinted on them."

Whats kind of bad is RPGs on a handheld. Its hard on the eyes to read text. Since its one of their main games they should of put it on a console not a handheld. If it was an spinoff it wouldn't really matter.

I think I could see why they chose to develop for the Wii and DS instead of the PS3. After all, development costs are insane for the PS3 and the DS happens to have the largest market based on hardware sales. Minimize the costs of production and maximize potential for sales. Marketing for dummies.

Why would you play all 8 but not want to play the 9th because it's on a portable? I couldn't forget about my favorite game. And by the way, vanhalendlrband, it's on TWO tiny screens. :)

The only suprising thing is that it's being made a handheld game as all the others have been console games. The series has always migrated consoles and the PS2 has only had what, 2 of the franchaises 8 titles to date? And only one of those two released here as far as I can remember? The only thing that would be a real vote of no confidence is completely striping them of all their franchises. Otherwise this is just buisness as usual.

"I'm hopeful for the 360, because to be honest, 600 dollars is still too much just to play FFXIII." 600 is too much for any one game. Including Halo 3, Zelda, GTA, anything. But you don't buy a 600 console for just one game. There are other games you get for it that add up. People keep quoting that '600 is too high for one game' line as if all you can do on PS3 is play one game. Gears of War is good, but 400 is too much for one game. Halo 3 will be good, but 400 is too much for that game. I think you get the point. By the time FF13 comes out, I doubt the PS3 will still be selling for 600. And if it is, you could always get the 500 model which has everything the 600 has except a SD/Flash card reader, which you don't need (none of the 360 models have this), and built in Wi-Fi (none of the 360 models have this either), which you also don't need.

I'm really happy that SE decided to make a new DQ on DS console;) If DQ IX would be as good as the DQ VIII on Ps2 it ll be great. Though screens doesn't seem to be rly good xD. But let's remember that gameplay > graphics ;). I hope that DQ will be the best RPG game on Nintendo DS=D

I think the graphics look great. To everyone who's not sure of those graphics, just remember that Wind Waker did that once upon a time, and the community had the same negative reaction. Then the game sold strong, hit everyone upside the head, and showed us how good it really was....even if it reminded me of WaterWorld. :P

@KOSMOSEngineer "You do realize that a Final Fantasy VII entry is on PSP, right? FF7 fans are gonna buy that even if they dont' have a PSP jsut to look at the box." That's remind me of myself in junior high. I didn't even have PS1 console when I bought FF7. I bought PS 1 a few months later though. but I don't think I will do the same with this new FF7 for PSP. By looking at number of SE's games for both systems, I'm pretty sure that PSP will end up like Gamegear (or could be a bit better). << LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>

densetsukenshin: "Personally, I would rather see this game on either the PS3 or the Wii. Why? As of now, this game looks like DQVIII all over again, just with a fraction of the graphics. Not that you can really judge from two whole screenshots, but still. Personally, on the DS, I'd rather Square Enix do what they've already done with FFIII: make 3D updates of the old Dragon "Warrior" games. " Amen, brudda! Right now this game is looking like a disappointment. Oh sure, I'll still buy it because it's DQ and doesn't need to look good, but still it would be nice to see at least one Dragon Quest done in a nice graphical style. I personally liked the voice acting and other minor touches that likely won't make it to the Nintendo DS game (namely Jessica's jiggling boobies :P ) However, I am semi-opposed to recreating the rest of the DQ games in 3-D style. I think it would take too much away from the game. In addition DQ 5 and 6 are at least twice as long in gameplay than FF 3, so I would wonder if they could fit it all on the DS card. However, no matter what way they make them, I would still be interested in an official translation to see how it stacks up against the DeJap roms that I have been playing. Furthermore, given the success of DQ 8, why isn't Square releasing their PS2 remakes of 4 and 5 for the PS2 here? That would keep both Sony and the fans happy until DQ9 comes out

heh, history repeats itself. but this time...square enix is coming back to nintendo! :D heh, well...if things keep going like they have, the ps3 will be in third place this generation. it will release a ps4. and that's where things will get sticky. but...so far....wow. can't believe nintendo is finally back to its full glory. now...we just need rare back and it'll be like the good ol' days :P

I hope they make it for the PS2 as well, otherwise I'm going to have to get a DS. It will eventually come to the U.S. DW8 did very well here in the U.S., so there's no reason why DQIX won't be released here. I just hate having to wait 6-10months after the Japan release to get it. DQX will most likely be released on the PS3.

Not that good for Sony but I can sorta understand the reasoning. When you consider that Square Enix is relying on Level 5 for the Dragon Quest series these days, they are already doing White Knight Story for the PS3, that would mean they'd have to spread resources across two big games on a platform that isn't cheap to develop for. Can't blame Square on this one imo

what do you guys love DQ so much. its just a very typical old fashion RPG. Attack, Magic, Items.. blabla.. very traditional if thats what you guys really like. i played DQ8 halfway, i get bored and quited. not very interactive .. well, you obviously didnt grow up in the late 80's when RPG's on the NES were a big thing and new for the genre. I'm glad to have played those old classic games, DQ 8 was also fun on my PS2, now i'm gonna get a DS lite just for this game alone!

I wish they put it on the wii at least.... Putting on a handheld is nice I guess... Anyways Level 5 is one busy developer. They've made jeanne D'arc for the psp and Rogue Galaxy for ps2 just this year. Now they're working on 2 dragon quests games and white Knight for ps3. sheesh how many developers do they got? Lets hope all games turn out well.

search google news and you can find gameplay footage. it looks like it's not traditional DQ, but ACTION-rpg. densetsukenshin: hopefully DQIX is successful on DS and then we can see some ports of games like Dragon Warrior 5 & 6 that america is still waiting for. ALSO - there are a lot of reasons people love DQ. partly because it is traditional. if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Ooh, this might actually make me play this game. I've been buying up all the RPGs for the DS and GBA to play on my DS. I actually like it because I can play it anywhere instead of just my game room, which is in the cold basement. Plus, the graphics are not really important on a good RPG, if you think about it. FFXII could have been made just fine and have been just as fun using graphics from the FFVII era. The cutscenes may have been watered down, but who cares about those? I just hope the music does not suffer, that's the most important part of an RPG, imo.

KOSMOSEngineer That's what I thought, DS has too many games just for toying around. At least it has a real game now. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's what I was thinking too. We need a good hardcore RPG for the DS, and I think an original DQ title for the system would be the best thing to happen to handheld RPGs since Golden Sun. It also makes sense from SquareEnix's position too, considering the DS is the top system right now. They have a much larger audience they can reach with that than with the 360, PS3, Wii, or PSP. I'm not really surprised it's not for Sony's systems at all, despite the shock the article seems to express. Dragon Quest has always been about fun first and foremost, so it only makes sense it'll be on the game system that puts playability as it's top priority.
