Dragon Quest IX exclusive to DS

[UPDATE] Square Enix announces next installment of series will be strictly portable on Nintendo's handheld; game is subtitled Guard of the Starry Night.

The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.

Though not exactly a household name for gamers here in the United States, the Dragon Quest series is one of the most popular gaming franchises in Japan. The release of Dragon Quest VIII in Japan was met with the same frenzy that typically accompanies the release of the latest edition of another Square Enix franchise, Final Fantasy.

Square Enix released Dragon Quest VIII on the PlayStation 2, which was a great boon for Sony. However, it appears as though the benefactor of Dragon Quest IX will be one of Sony's rivals. Forbes reports that Dragon Quest IX has been announced as an exclusive for the Nintendo DS.

Some analysts think this could be a big blow against Sony because the Dragon Quest franchise is considered a top-tier franchise and has sold more than 41 million copies worldwide. Hiroshi Kamide, analyst at KBC Securities, said the decision to put Dragon Quest IX exclusively on the DS "was rather unexpected, so it's not a huge vote of confidence for the PlayStation 3," reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Another look at the lead character's backside.

Square is also preparing a Dragon Quest game for the Wii, due early next year, and recently released Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, a series spin-off, for the DS.

[UPDATE] Square Enix has confirmed that the DS Dragon Quest is in development, and that it is tentatively called Dragon Quest IX: Guard of the Starry Night. The game will be more action-oriented than previous Dragon Quest games, and battles will "take place on the field." There will also be support for four-player multiplayer, presumably through the DS's Wi-Fi capabilities. DQIX is currently scheduled for release in Japan in 2007; no US release window was given.

Square Enix also reconfirmed that the Dragon Quest Wii title, Dragon Quest Swords: Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, will be released in spring 2007.

But that's not the last of Dragon Quest news. Another DQ game, Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road, is headed to Japanese arcades and is a "card-battle game where players battle monsters in a coliseum to win real-life cards with monster data imprinted on them."

@ ShiroRX... It's the analysts' jobs to keep tabs on the industry and offer their opinions as so-called "experts." it's part of my job to report on what they say, so I included it. Considering how many DS's per household there are n Japan its not that surprising. (I think it was like 3!) Besides the FF franchise is staying on for Sony and thats what I like to hear.

the dragon quest games have always been very simple, with little complexity. This is the exact opposite of the Ps3 and PsP. This boring series fits better on boring consoles, like nintendo. playstation still has FFXIII, and any smart person knows the final fantasies are muchhhhh better than the dragon quests (which is for lil kids).

Sony has plenty of excellent rpgs slated w/o needing a Dragon Quest. Again, its pretty ignorant to say SE is moving away from sony with the future of Final Fantasy is exclusive to the 3. Expect to see XIV and XV on the 3 too.

PS3 is getting FF XIII and varients. DS and Wii are getting Dragon Quest games. And SE has said they want to see all the new home consoles succeed, so what franchise will Xbox 360 get, and will the runaway success of Blue Dragon have an impact on that decision?

It really isnt the fact that it is coming to a Nintendo platform, it is the fact that Sony lost another key franchise. Of course I am more excited than ever at the thought of a wifi DQ game that is traditional

Lack of confidence in ps3? Why even print that crap Mr. Surette? That statement holds absolutely no ground considering Square Enix has stated they had no plans to put all their heavy hitters on one system, in addition to developing a totally new engine for their flagship Final Fantasy which appears EXCLUSIVELY on the 3 with two games slated already.

FFXII Revinant Wings, Dragon Quest IX, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, Heroes of Mana... Seems the DS is the place to be for SQE RPGs this generation. Oh, and Dragon Quest has never been known for it's graphcal strength...Even DQV remix on PS2 looked like a PS1 game.

Dang, Dragon Quest 8 was one of the best RPG's I had ever played and couldn't wait for the next one. But I'm not shelling out a couple hundred for a mediocre portable system just to play the next installment. Bad decision on their part.

I really don't care which company gets the game, but why DS? Why not the Wii? Oh and that Wii game is that crappy looking first person arcade game, like the awful one on PlayStation, I wouldn't exactly get excited for it.

Dragon Quest IX was NEVER a PS3 game... It was originally intended for the PS2. The DS actually makes more sense for SE. Wait and see what they do with DQX.

Crazy...I never suspected this one to happen. Hopefully they will keep the series sense of style and incorporate DS functionality that is worthwhile. It has potential to be an awesome game. And a Wii game?! Bonus.
