Now Playing: GS News Update: Dragon Quest 11 Release Date Announced For PS4, PC; Switch Much Later

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Dragon Quest XI finally has a release date on PC and PlayStation 4, but not all the news is rosy if you prefer your RPGs on Nintendo systems. Square Enix has indicated that the Switch version may take quite a while to arrive in the West, and the 3DS version simply isn't coming at all.

In a statement shared with GameSpot, the company indicated that the Switch version is still in development for North America and Europe, but that the developer still has "a long way to go until its release." A representative suggested a Switch version isn't coming in 2018, and that it could be much later. The company states that "development is expected to take a long time from a technological standpoint."

The 3DS version is even worse off. The ambitious idea was a standalone version developed alongside the PS4, with pixel art to complement the 3D models. Rather than a delay, that version isn't coming at all.

"Our aim with Dragon Quest XI and the Dragon Quest brand is to grow the audience in the West. From a business point of view, it made strategic sense to release the 3DS version in Japan in 2017," the statement read. "For the West in 2018, it made the most sense to focus on the PlayStation 4 and PC (Steam) platforms."

The PC and PlayStation 4 versions will be coming on September 4. It has been available in Japan since last year, but the extra time and effort is going in to some tweaks to make the US version friendly to western audiences. Changes include an English voiceover, an overhauled menu and UI, a dash function, and a harder Draconian Quest mode. DQXI also introduces a first-person camera mode to check out the landscapes in greater detail.

I can understand why this series is less successful in the west. It's fairly simplistic JRPG fare with generally weak stories. And each numbered DQ game brings little to the table that hasn't been reheated from previous titles.

Maybe just release these games digital only if they're not selling as well in the US? Seriously, there'd be next to no chance of loss if they did. It can't be too expensive to translate a finished game that likely has very little voice acting.

no more 3ds then why did spend so much money on it now I am pissed Nintendo owes it's fans more than this

@slick1227: It's seven years old... If you haven't gotten enough out of it with seven years of releases, then it just wasn't the system for you in the first place. Besides, this has nothing to do with Nintendo and is completely Square Enix's decision

I'm gonna back in school by then, so I guess that means I'm gonna have to wait to play this and RDR2... :S

Why do so many people here seem to care about the 3DS version anyway? I would have thought that all Nintendo fanboys would already own a Switch. Is it the love for the outdated hardware and tiny dual screens?

Avatar image for srfilk86

@Atzenkiller: I think it's because they could see the 8 bit version next to the "Modern" version on the two screens. Which is pretty cool.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@srfilk86: Yeah, I've seen the game as it is on the 3DS now. And I really can't see what the point of the 2D retro version on the second screen is because from what I've seen you're still playing the game on the upper screen. That's the world you interact with and where you move your character around.

But aside from that the 3D version on the 3DS is hardly modern as the graphics come closest to PS2 hardware. So it's a pretty big step down if they developed the main version for current gen consoles.

It makes strategic sense to not release a product some people have been waiting for?

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@lostn: "Some people" often isn't enough to warrant it. I'd assume there've been more people waiting for a western release of PSO2 than for this game's 3DS version. Yet Sega doesn't care to this day, even though they've released the game for multiple platforms by now, including PS4 and PS Vita, and it's doing quite well in Japan. So this really isn't surprising for a Japanese dev and things used to be a lot worse.

Avatar image for Ovirew

@Atzenkiller: I immediately thought of pso2 when I read this.

I guess with the way DQ10 and 11 have been taking so long to come Westward, I kind of expected some part of that deal to give. I wouldn't be surprised if DQ11 just releases on pc and PS4, no DQ10 and no Switch release at all.

That is one thing about many Japanese devs, they either skip glibal releases or else the game goes into absolute development MIA.

No 3DS version... meh. Awesome games for Nintendo going forward should be for Switch only. I'm as big a Nintendo fan as there is, and the 3DS WAS awesome, but it has served it's purpose and Nintendo needs to kill it with fire. Hearing that awesome games are coming to 3DS instead of Switch is a headache I hope goes away very soon ie: Detective Pikachu and GCN Luigi's Mansion etc.

Avatar image for lostn

@dr_vancouver: There's no harm in it coming to both.

Those who have both systems can buy for whichever they prefer. Those who have 3DS but not Switch have to miss out.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@lostn: You mean aside from the fact that the 3DS is way less powerful and so bringing a game to both would mean developing a game for 2 generations of consoles/handhelds. Hence why they used Pixel graphics to replace some 3D models. Not exactly a common thing.

Not that it matters much here since they've already created that version. But if I had to guess it's the worst version performance wise and that might be the main reason why they chose not to release it here, aside from the significantly larger install base of consoles over handhelds in the west.

Wonder how they will handle the switch ver. If the switch uses the ps4 assets there will be massive downgrade. Hope for a custom ver or 3ds ver that is ported but with voice acting.

Avatar image for lostn

@sakaixx: won't be that massive a downgrade. It's not exactly pushing the PS4 to its limits.

But it might run in 720p/30 fps as opposed to 1080p/60 or 4K.

Avatar image for sakaixx
sakaiXx

@lostn: judging on how games got released on switch it will. I mean it can achieve 720p or even 1080p but those details gonna have to be downgraded. I mean yeah u play for gameplay but those graphics and details does help to flesh out the world.

Dunno I am just skeptical after doom released. Sure they can have doom on switch but its 600p 20-30fps compared to 1080p/60fps on other console.

@cboy95: Why waste to development money when the last RPG they released on Xbox got out sold on PS4 by about 6 to 1. The western audience for this even lower with around 9 copies selling in Japan to every 1 in NA. The majority of the Xbox user base is in NA so.... ya, no port for you.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@cboy95: MS made absolutely no effort this gen to get Japanese partners, and even spurned Square when they reached out to get FFXIV on Xbox One. Last gen they did an amazing job, enough to get FF to go multiplatform, Mistwalker games, an exclusive Katamari game, Cave shooters, Sega exclusives...

MS dropped the ball there IMO, they need to rebuild bridges

Avatar image for timothyss10

@girlusocrazy: much more that the Japanese consumer did not buy the xbox360 at all despite very apparent effort to make new games and IP more in japans direction of gaming. those early "jrpg" on the 360 where amazing games. i just recently replayed blue dragon. Americans don't buy dragon quest, and japan did not buy mass effect and red dead. we here, on a game review website probably are a but more hard gamer then the masses in the market.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@timothyss10: Here's the thing, Japanese gamers aren't the only ones who love Japanese games, just like Americans aren't the only ones who play American developed games, and people in Europe aren't the only ones who play European games, etc. Games are universal.

I wish MS had made more of an effort to get all of them. Last gen I got a 360 for the games I mentioned above. This gen my One is collecting dust. I'd use it for BC if games like Outrun, Panzer Dragoon, Otogi, Deathsmiles, Beautiful Katamari, Donpachi, Silpheed, Akai Katana, etc were supported but they don't even have BC for those.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@timothyss10: Western games are popular in Japan as well as far as I'm aware. But yeah, it seems like MS has just given up on the Japanese market for now. For good reason, since the first Xbox the Japanese have been completely ignoring it and nothing seems to have changed about that so far. They've already wasted more than enough money on trying to make it work there I assume.

As for DQ in the west, wasn't DQ8 rather successful? The pretty much only one that they released for a current gen console with nice graphics and everything? Weren't all or most DQ games after that released for Nintendo's handheld and maybe even their consoles? You're not gonna sell too many units of a niche title in the west if you focus mainly on handhelds.

The Monster Hunter series is a pretty good example for that. The hardcore fans sure liked to mention how the games were only as successful as they were because they were confined to Nintendo handhelds. And the series was only really successful in Japan until recently. But then MHW comes out for consoles and turns into a big success worldwide. Who would have thought?

Avatar image for soliaired50

@cboy95: Is it really that surprising? I mean granted FFXV and KHIII are also on XB1 but compared to them, I'd say DQ is more niche in the west.

Sounds like a bunch of hooey - the 3DS version already exists, no? How much work can it really take to port it to the West besides translation?

Well then PS4 it is. I'm not going to beat around the bush waiting for the Switch version where it will very likely be inferior to the others. I wouldn't have bought the 3DS version if it had been released anyways...
