Square Enix's critically acclaimed Dragon Quest XI is coming to Xbox, the publisher announced ahead of today's Xbox Showcase event. The game will launch on Xbox One, Windows 10 PC, and Xbox Game Pass on December 4, and will be playable on Xbox Series X.

The latest entry in the beloved JRPG series, Dragon Quest XI casts players in the role of the Luminary, the reincarnation of a legendary hero who is fated to save the kingdom of Erdrea from the forces of darkness. The Xbox version is based on Switch's Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition, which featured re-recorded music, the option to play the adventure in 2D, and other enhancements.

This is the first time the Dragon Quest series has made its way to Xbox.

In addition to Xbox, Square Enix has confirmed it is bringing Dragon Quest XI S to PS4 and Steam as well. The original version of the game was previously released for both platforms, but this marks the first time the Definitive Edition will be available on them. However, because it is a port of the Switch version, it will be released as its own separate game--so if you already own the original Dragon Quest XI on either platform, you won't simply be able to upgrade that to the Definitive Edition.

Dragon Quest XI originally released on PS4 back in 2017, with the aforementioned Switch version following in 2019. We awarded the game a 9/10 in our original Dragon Quest XI review. Critic Heidi Kemps wrote, "Dragon Quest XI is one of the best modern examples of this; its beautiful presentation, both visual- and story-wise, combines with a tried-and-true gameplay formula for a journey that's full of heart and soul. Once you find yourself sucked into the world of Dragon Quest XI, it's going to be hard to put down until you reach the grand finale."

Microsoft's Xbox Showcase featured lots of Xbox Series X games, including a look at Halo Infinite and several previously unannounced first-party titles like Obsidian's Avowed and a new Fable. You can catch up on all the biggest news from the broadcast in our Xbox Showcase recap.
