Dragon Age News Coming Soon, BioWare Teases

"We're excited to continue its legacy."

The Dragon Age franchise has been quiet since 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition, but that's set to change soon. BioWare's Casey Hudson says that the company is preparing to say more about its plans for the series sometime in December.

"If you've been following these blogs, or myself and Mark Darrah on Twitter, you know we're also working on some secret Dragon Age stuff," Hudson said on the BioWare blog recently. "Dragon Age is an incredibly important franchise in our studio, and we're excited to continue its legacy. Look for more on this in the coming month (though I won't tell you where to look…)"

The reference to the coming month is December, during which the biggest game event is the annual Game Awards. That also happens to house a lot of debuts and announcements alongside the accolades, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the impending Dragon Age announcement show up there. Inquisition won the top honor of Game of the Year at 2014's Game Awards.

Dragon Age was one of two major franchises that BioWare was alternating between in the last generation, the other being Mass Effect. Mass Effect made the journey to the new generation of consoles with Mass Effect: Andromeda, but Dragon Age has not had a new game created exclusively for this generation.

Hudson has previously acknowledged a new Dragon Age in development, responding to concerns about EA's push for live content. In August he teased secret projects in the works across their franchises. BioWare has also made clear that it's still pursuing the future of Mass Effect too.

Currently BioWare's next major release is Anthem, which is coming in February 2019. It will be accompanied by a demo.

Holy **** at the comments. You'd think people would be excited for a new Dragon Age, but with the way things are nowadays in the industry I'm not surprised people aren't looking forward to this. It will probably be some mmo/gaas type garbage.

@DarknessR18: Totally agreed with you. My interest with Dragon Age died after I played Inquisition. Till today I haven't managed to finish Inquisition. Mass Effect... such a sad story, I did not even purchase Andromeda and my friends who are hard core ME fans told me to stay away from it. IMO they should really keep things simple, focus on their strength of producing quality single player RPGs like they used to. Not some MMO/Online transaction with all the lag times and etc, really kills the experience. When I bought ME3 collector's edition, it was a total let down as well. They really need to go back to the roots, just like Capcom finally realised that simplicity is genius, they have gone back to produce a refreshed Resident Evil 2 that fans would like, not some silly arcade style 2 player bash em up zombie game.

Hire somone else to design the characters. Bioware, you are doing a terrible job. For once, listen to your customers.

As I always say, I feel sorry for the talented background/FX artists. They build beautiful worlds only to have it filled with... well... garbage.

I have a feeling this will be another franchise destroyed by these publishers. Just seems like a downward slope for gaming.

ABout time, They have been getting yelled at for years by DA fans for more DLC and a continuation of the epic story line (DA1=>DA2=>DA3). I want a standalone game for the PS4. I like playing offline. They will ruin it by making it an online only game.

I wonder if the rumor at a convention had anything with getting them off their butts? It was: That some people in Europe were getting serious about going beyond just Mods for the PC version of DA3(Inquisition) and crowdsourcing for enough money to develop a new DLC for it if Bioware did not do something and fast.

@raclapp: I seriously doubt that. Partly because fan made projects like that almost never come to fruition, and partly because BioWare could shut it down with one cease and desist letter. Anthem is a few months from launch, it's about time to let people know BioWare has other irons in the fire to keep all their teams working.

@Defender1978: I'll bet not. They've got SWTOR already (which is appearently still getting serious development), and they've got Anthem about to come out. Dragon Age Online would compete directly with both of those. It'll be a service game, but it wont be an MMO or largely designed around multiplayer.

As important as the Mass Effect series was to them? I sure hope they're not going to ruin that franchise in the same way, but at this point I really wouldn't be surprised anymore if they did.

"Look for more on this in the coming month (though I won't tell you where to look…)"

If you're using the same character generator that you used for Mass Effect Andromeda, I suppose the most appropriate place to start looking would be the Sims 3 Create-a-Sim character editor, but that seems like a foolish place to start looking for Dragon Age news.

Expect shitty graphics. Expect game breaking bugs. Expect EA to monetize everything (now that loot boxes are under fire, EA would like to proudly introduce NEW Dragon Age premium Loot Barrels). Expect half a shitty game at launch and the other half to be delivered on payment via "season pass" DLC. But most importantly of all, it's MODERN Bioware, so expect to be disappointed. Maybe it's cynical, but they've only produced two "good"games in the last 10 years, and even that's debatable to some.

If you're a fan of the series...that's great. I was too. Just understand that all of the talent, creativity and soul that went into producing the games you loved in the past has long since been expunged from the company by EA, and all that's left in it's place is a dry, hollow husk with a small "Hello my name is..." sticker that reads "ELECTRONIC ARTS/bioware."

@jerusaelem: They have produced more than two good games the last decade: Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age:Origins and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Granted, it's been a couple of years and they might be more EA than Bioware now - ME:A was missing both quality story writing and was released as a buggy mess, Anthem is going to be another "let's do this thing 100x to get the loot I want" repetetive boredom-machine like Destiny and Dragon Age 2 can be used as a textbook example of "rushed" and "asset reuse".

@tsunami2311: I thought Inquisition's combat was a lot better than Origins'. The only thing I missed from Origins was the ability to customize the AI's tactics (and really, I missed it from DA2, because Tactics slots weren't tied to skills there).

@Mogan: Plus characters and decisions were better in Origins. Plus I feel it's kinda lazy when the endings have zero choice to them like there were several ways you could tackle the ending in Origins and 2 same boss fight of course but different ways it could go.

I enjoyed DA:I, so if they build on the core and trim the fat a bit I'd be excited.

DA:O was one of the most amazing games I played back when it came out, and they've yet to rival that experience.

@masscrack: step 1) Go to EA Origin Website and pre-order the new Dragon Age videogame (the Ultimate edition for £80, or better still the Collector's edition with blow up dragon and plastic sword and certificate for £179.

2) Wait 9 months until the official release date.

3) Wait 2 more months for a late / delayed release.

4) On release day wait 7 hours to download the game, go to sleep with frustration and wake up.

5) Day after release day play the game and find out that it's buggy, unfinished and low on expected quality.

6) Run to web review sites and see the negative feedback from angry gamers.

7) Panic and raise a support ticket to EA demanding a refund.

8) Wait six days and read the automated response from EA stating that you cannot have a refund because you played the buggy, uncompleted, low quality game.

9) Go on Gamespot.com and vent your anger at being denied of a refund and duped into buying a piece of cr*p !!

10) See me in the Gamespot.com comments section again, gloating at the gullible !!!

@Silverline62: There wasn't anything gamebreaking or even bad there? What broke ME:A was a lack of focus, too little story writing too late, too much filler content and releasing the whole thing as a buggy mess. https://kotaku.com/the-story-behind-mass-effect-andromedas-troubled-five-1795886428 is a nice story of the development there.

@Silverline62: That ain't what ruined Andromeda. They could have made every character white, hot, and straight and it wouldn't have made that game good. Andromeda was under cooked, and terribly written start to finish. : \

@Silverline62: Inquisition already had that problem with the ugly characters. It was a real struggle to make a female character that looked good too which really annoyed Girls I know who like the Dragon Age games and wanted a pretty character.

I recently went back to the original Mass Effect after playing 4 hours of Andromeda, and I almost cried. The original ME probably has the best story I have seen in a video game, and the graphics hold up today (my sister even thought it was a recent game, based on the looks alone). I'd give anything to see what Mass Effect would look like in this generation - a proper ME that is, with competent developers/ writers and without all the SJW garbage.

I hope they make a game like they used to, and not a micro transaction multiplayer grind to the game.

I've bought every Bioware game at launch since BG:1, but after the ME:A mess and Anthem being a "let's grind! Do the same thing 100 times, and the random loot generator might reward you!"-multiplayer Destiny-clone it will be the first Bioware game I'll just ignore since then.

Bioware used to make games to tell great stories with amazing characters.

Now they make the game then try to remember to squeeze in some of that stuff.
