Dragon Age: Inquisition sees return of multiple player races

Third Dragon Age game will allow player to pick their race, as well as introduce mounts to the series for the first time.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will allow players to create characters from multiple races, developer BioWare has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

The developer spoke about the next entry of the fantasy RPG series in the latest issue of Game Informer, saying that the studio was addressing fan criticism of the second game for the sequel.

The original Dragon Age: Origins allowed players to create a character from a range of races. Its sequel, Dragon Age II, forced players into the role of a human named Hawke.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will also introduce mounts into the series, and reintroduce customisable armour.

In the game, the player will take the role as the head of the Inquisition, an organisation formed to confront evil and corruption in the land of Thedas.

"As the game begins, the Inquisition has plenty to investigate. War, scheming, and political strife have left the major power groups in the Dragon Age universe unable to operate effectively, which is a problem when a hole opens in the sky and demons begin pouring out. Players must fight back against the demonic threat while exploring a vast world and consolidating power for the growing Inquisition," said Game Informer's report.

"Large and varied environments, customisable armor, and the return of multiple player races are just a few of the ways BioWare is addressing feedback from previous titles in order to shape a new future for the franchise."

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2014.

Great news to hear. Here's hoping to see something similar to Origins in the final product.

Does DA3 have the same silent protagonist as in DA:O? cuz the one thing I REALLY hated was how restrictive dialog options were in DA2 compared to the 1st one.

It just felt a lot like Mass Effect and that was a VERY bad thing considering the many options you could choose in Origins. From what I remember some companions in the original had more conversation lines than most of the main cast of DA2 put together...

@MegaX- They pretty much confirmed a voiced protagonist and dialogue wheel. The lead writer justified this on the forums to the point where I actually agreed with him on the matter. But it was a lot of words and paragraphs so I barely remember now (it was months ago)

They are apparently trying hard to avoid the mistakes Mass Effect made with it, like using opinionated auto-dialogue (like in ME3 where Shepard would just go off calling a counciler blind even if his words made sense to the player), any of that would just be neutral prgressionary stuff. And they are trying to make the paraphrases as close to the actual line a spossible, to avoid saying things you didn't want to.

He also said they are doing a few things with it that they weren't ready to talk about yet, so look out for that.

@MegaX- I dunno, at this point in my life I just can't go back to silent protagonists. It just kills me every time an npc talks to my character, while all it does is stare into the distance and/or randomly make weird facial expressions. Unless they can cleverly write around it, I hope they stick to the current formula.

now we have racial/gender choices, the chances are it' back to silent protag. That's just the way it has to be.

@shingui5 @Pro-Aktivity Well they could always stick to one voice, it's not like say, Varick talked any different despite being a dwarf. Or they could do the saints row thing, and add three different fully voiced options.

If we have racial choices, the chances are highly in favour of silent protag. Voicing every single race/gender choice would be a massive resource drain.

@MegaX- I would prefer it if NPCs actually reacted to what you were saying. Especially if you ask the same damn question over and over, why would they keep giving the same answer.

I want to see an NPC get mad because you keep picking stupid and unrelated dialogs options and even be frustrated if I keep asking the same question rather than what we currently have in.... well just about any RPG with a dialog system

Sounding good so far, after hearing that they've been listening to the fans and taking notes why DA2 sucked, I have a bit more faith in DA:I being a good game.

@KamuiFei This might actually be the first time when a games company says "we have been listening to the fans," they might not be lieing? Would be quite the feat.

I hope that this time they will try to not make this a mass effect wannabe. I really liked DA:O, but DA 2 killed my interest in this franchise. Hope they will show some good content soon.

@Yamakoichi @Picia000123 Yep yep, why try to do something different, when you can do it copy & paste style! Just rename Shepard as Hawke, force to choose only one race, make the same dialogue system and instead of DA:O combat just do hack'n'slash combat!Less effort, same amount of income, unsatissfied customer, PERFECT! Oh wait....

@Picia000123 Pro Tip: The Rabbit Hole does go deeper.

I have found that anyone who calls DA2 a hack and slash never played on the harder difficulties, infact I can guarantee that they never played it above normal.

You will not get through the insane difficulties without learning how to effectively build classes and use very advanced tactics.

They have some very big posts dedicated to mastering it on the bioware social forums.

One thing about which I am really happy is that they are introducing totally different control mechanism for PC version , made specifically for Mouse and Keyboard .

@Cloud_imperium They consolized the shit out of the controls for DA2. Out of all the problems the game had, that oddly enough was my biggest complaint.

@Auriken @Cloud_imperium True but it still got more score on PC than on consoles because of better tactical top down camera , AI and better Textures . However Dragon Age Origins was true PC game .

idk, this the surest sign of lack of direction. Especially after they were adamant about a human protag a few months ago.

don't get me wrong, i'm happy about this, but it does nothing to alleviate my worry's about the series.

@shingui5 ...okay let me get this straight. People complained about the lack of environment variety in DA2, Bioware fixes that by making the game more open world, people complained about the rushed development of DA2, Bioware literally doubles the development time for DA3, people complained that you could only be a human in DA2, Bioware adds multiple races back into the game, and people STILL complain.

Every single thing they have announced so far has been a fix for almost every problem DA2 had, but people are still finding reasons to give them crap. All I've seen so far is that they listened to their fans and actually made changes to avoid those same mistakes again.

But somehow you're still worried about the series...because of lack of direction. That kind of hurts my head.

@Auriken @shingui5

Then you don't know how much i hate DA2 >_>

anyway, should we really be fawning over Bioware right not, just for saying a few things we want to hear?
Especially after the things we are hearing now, contradict with their earlier, rather adamant stances.

I will always be more in favour of developers creating the game they want, rather than bending to the fan's wishes. And if they are seeming to compromise what they originally planned, then that worries me greatly.

@corrus @Yamakoichi @Auriken @shingui5 It had annoyances (companions customisation, lazy level designs, reused levels from origins, bad customisation in character creator, preset end boss battles that ignored choices)
However, even with that, I still very much enjoyed the game. Infact I have replayed DA2 more than games like Half life 2 which only got a single run

Sounds good, let's hope they don't **** it up.

Stupid nitpicking, but I wonder if we have to purchase a mounth for each party member, or if the traveling is gonna be "Dragon Quest VIII-esq" quere you only see the main character.

@Dudersaper Actually that is interesting. I remember a lot of times some party characters who were not under haste because they went down in combat would get stuck or lost..... How annoying if only my main has a horse and the rest of the party cannot keep up and just stop trying to follow like a few bugs in DA2...........

@Deftones73 @Pro-Aktivity @Dudersaper @Yamakoichi Yeah, there was a bit of mounted combat, you could strike to whatever side, but it was super clunky and many times my horse would die for me not hitting the damn enemies on time.

Didn't they say a while back that you could only be a human again? I guess they changed their minds. Good job, Bioware! That was such a huge complaint people had with the second game. So lets check the DA2 hatelist.

DA2: Too many repeated environments/DAI: Open world enough to need a horse.

DA2: Could only be a human/DAI: Reintroduced multiple races.

DA2: No toolset/DAI: No announcement on that one I think. Would be really stupid to make that mistake twice.

DA2: Rushed development/DAI: Doubled the development time for DAI.

So far that's all we know about the game. Bioware is doing a fantastic job of keeping things quiet.
