Dragon Age: Inquisition sees return of multiple player races

Third Dragon Age game will allow player to pick their race, as well as introduce mounts to the series for the first time.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will allow players to create characters from multiple races, developer BioWare has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

The developer spoke about the next entry of the fantasy RPG series in the latest issue of Game Informer, saying that the studio was addressing fan criticism of the second game for the sequel.

The original Dragon Age: Origins allowed players to create a character from a range of races. Its sequel, Dragon Age II, forced players into the role of a human named Hawke.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will also introduce mounts into the series, and reintroduce customisable armour.

In the game, the player will take the role as the head of the Inquisition, an organisation formed to confront evil and corruption in the land of Thedas.

"As the game begins, the Inquisition has plenty to investigate. War, scheming, and political strife have left the major power groups in the Dragon Age universe unable to operate effectively, which is a problem when a hole opens in the sky and demons begin pouring out. Players must fight back against the demonic threat while exploring a vast world and consolidating power for the growing Inquisition," said Game Informer's report.

"Large and varied environments, customisable armor, and the return of multiple player races are just a few of the ways BioWare is addressing feedback from previous titles in order to shape a new future for the franchise."

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2014.

@Fernin-Ker @javalino Actually, as far as I've seen on some of the other big sites, the answer is (surprisingly) yes. We'll be able to play as Qunari (of the race itself), according to GI.

Well now, that should be quite nice. Here's hoping for the option to play as a renegade Qunari mage. I neglected making a mage in DAO or DAII so it's bout time to give one a shot.

Yes but how is the combat. X-com already proved how amazing turn based combat can be, let's hope it's at least similar to Origins and far far away from the action crap that was in DA2.

This one single news has put this game back on the map for me after not giving a rat's *** about it since DA2 :). I will now be pre-ordering it.

Although Dragon Age II wasn't better than Origins, I still enjoyed it. Hopefully Inquisition will address the issues that the sequel had.

Technically anyone can be "Qunari", and infact I for one HOPE for that as a background option. As for being one of the race itself, I kinda doubt it since they tower over everyone else and thus would need all kinda of custom rigging and scripting that would lengthen development more than the publisher is probably willing to allow.

"Large and varied environments" - normally I would read that as marketing fluff, but after the copy+paste fiasco that was DA2, DA3 could really use them.

I would find these games much more compelling if they had a coop factor in them. I know they are made to be epic solo player storylines, but squad based games like these would be much more fun when playing with friends.

@RELeon It would be kinda interesting, I guess. But why would they do that? That would be much more suited to a future ME game (I hear a fourth is in the works). I guess I could see it, running around with your friends, getting into disputes during dialogue and whatnot, but it seems like it would take away from the experience.

I'm still cautiously optimistic they'll make something out of this. I think they got a lot of pretty consistent feedback on DA2. A number of systems I thought were really improved, but the incredibly short development time forced so many ugly shortcuts. Hopefully they'll turn this one around. Multiple player races and returning armor customization seem like small but positive signs to me.

Wow, this is actually some pretty good news. Not that it will stop a lot of people knee-jerking at the sound of "Dragon Age" nor responding with the words "NEVER!" at the concept of a Bioware me culpa. Still good news.

I guess this was theme of mass effect series as well as DA:O. Bioware has lost originality.

@vaibhavp No they tried something new in DA2 to make a city your home and save it from crumbling from within. But too much "oohh that plot sucked" hence we will go back to the save world from bad guy theme you play in every game.

@neroist @vaibhavp I wish they had done it better because I think that would have been a nice departure. Liked the concept, can't applaud the execution, plot-wise.

Oh how I dream for a PC exclusive Bioware RPG once again.

I know that it is impossible for companies to earn any cash if they only do PC and that I am a stupid naive computer hugger, but I will still dream dammit.

@Kronblom71 And what will that accomplish?

Neither ME 1,2,3, nor DA:O were PC exclusives and those were by no means hindered by having console versions.

I'm hoping they mean each race will have its own beginning story line; I.e. Dragon Age: Origins. That was something that made Origins awesome. You got connected to your character. I played all of the origin stories in Origins, and generally ended up replaying most of the game with each character. The different races generally had different strengths. I believe Dragon Age: Origins is one of the most underrated games of recent memory.

@alexg223 How is one of the most critically acclaimed (over 90% metacritic, and most gaming outlets) and most awarded games of this generation "underrated"?

Everyone loved it, and it's the closest I've ever seen to the magnificent level of my all time favorite game Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn.

Great game? You bet.
Underrated? Nope, not even a little, not even at all.

I think by under rated he means not as well known as it should be. After all look at Planescape Torment, quite possibly the single best RPG ever made, and its critic reviews reflect this fact. But only maybe one in twenty gamers even knows it exists, if even that many. Dragon Age suffers from the same thing.

Hmmmmmm, to be honest i hoped to have the hero from the first game as the protagonist.

I hope even the "origin chapters" will be back, but for some reason i doubt it will happen.

Anyway i really hope this game to be great :)

@MalakTawus Well they said that Grey wardens story has ended, but i still think that they'll put something from origins character in, since Morrigan is in the game. And as in my case my warden went with her thru the mirror. And also there's the godchild..

It only took them three games to finally get mounts. Better late than never is what I say. Although I don't really see how it could have been implied in the first one. I could see it in the second one, well when you're outside the city.

@tightwad34 Both games implied that horses and other riding animals exist in the universe. We can assume that they were used when traveling across Ferelden (or around Kirkwall), which is quite large, according to books and it still takes plenty of time to get from Denerim for Mage Tower, for example. We just never saw the actual animals in game (outside the camp, tied outside the city, tied outside the location, whatever).

Fact: Dragon Age Inquisition has been cancelled. The extant cutscene footage will now air exclusively in an 11-minute music video by dubstep sensation Klung entitled "W00t Says Bass"

I don't think three races is big enough to refer to as a "range."

for me, a big part of the 'dragon age' experience was being able to have a large power of customization over my character. Also, it felt like it had its own story, I felt like I had some choice in that story. The differences between the races and male/female storylines made the game much more interesting. This was a large part of what made the game more enjoyable for me. Glad to have it back.

Meh. I never cared about dwarves or elves. Now if they got a bit more creative and ended up including races I hadn't seen recycled so many times, I would actually find this piece of news interesting.
