You have until May 26 to download Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for free.

With Memorial Day swiftly approaching, Square Enix is giving away the Starter Edition of Final Fantasy 14 Online: A Realm Reborn for free on PlayStation 4.

The Starter Edition, which includes a 30-day free trial to the subscription-based MMORPG, normally retails for $20 on the PlayStation Store. However, until Tuesday, May 26, you can download the game and keep it--even after the date lapses. In addition to the 30-day trial, the Final Fantasy 14 Starter Edition packages the full A Realm Reborn experience and lets you level "all the way through to level 50."

If you are not sure you want to download the full game, which requires at least 40 GB of hard drive space to install, the PS Store also has a free demo available to check out. And you do not need active PlayStation Plus membership to play Final Fantasy 14.

While the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused patches for Final Fantasy 14 to be delayed, Square Enix has confirmed that the upcoming 5.3 update will revamp questing to help onboard new players more effectively. Final Fantasy 14's 5.3 update is slated to arrive sometime this summer.

A game should either charge for the base game or do a monthly fee, not both. This may be an attempt to snag new players but I don't see me being one.

@quinnd6: It's cheap marketing speak. Yes, technically you can download the demo for free and keep it. No, you don't ACTUALLY get to keep the live game. To continue playing it beyond the free trial period everyone else gets, you have to pay for a sub.

So what's the point of doing this now if the next patch, which is gonna make making playing through the base game smoother, is still far off?
