Doom II, Green Day demo lead XBL releases

Xbox Live Update: Release slate also includes Voodoo Dice, Games on Demand launches for Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, Battlestations: Midway.

This week's Xbox Live Marketplace update is striking a rather combative tone, spearheaded by military-minded Games on Demand entries and the Xbox Live Arcade release of Doom II.

Starting with the Games on Demand lineup, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is now available in all regions except the United Kingdom and Japan for $39.99. Microsoft is also now selling Battlestations: Midway in all regions except India and Japan, with the Eidos-developed naval action, real-time tactical game available for $19.99. Rounding out Microsoft's Games on Demand releases this week is last year's Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, which is now available in Europe, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The game was already selling in North America for $19.99.

Doom II on the PC was more fun than a barrel full of cacodemons.
Doom II on the PC was more fun than a barrel full of cacodemons.

Microsoft hasn't announced a price point for Doom II, but the XBLA rerelease will feature all of the original game's levels, as well as an all-new chapter created by the development team at Nerve Software. The game will also feature online and offline multiplayer in deathmatch and co-op flavors for up to four players.

The week's other Live Arcade addition is Voodoo Dice, an 800 MSP ($10) puzzle-solving title with 60 single-player levels, 20 multiplayer levels, and four multiplayer modes. The game is developed by Exkee, creator of Colorz for WiiWare and the physic-based PC title I-Fluid.

Harmonix and MTV Games' Green Day: Rock Band demo provides a first look and hands-on opportunity for music game enthusiasts two weeks ahead of the finalized product's June 8 release. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Welcome to Paradise" are playable in the trial, which features three-part harmonies, a game mechanic first seen in last year's The Beatles: Rock Band.

Can't get enough of the old classics, will probably buy Doom 2 just for the new chapter. also COD4 and 5 on 360 are dead, theres like 3000 on COD5 with only 1 person on HCS&D and 30 in HCTD last time i checked. seriously if people really did hate MW2 these two games wouldn't be under 7000 players combined.

Oh man it finally got released! I've been waiting for Doom II for 4 years! Sweet co-op option on and offline! We need more offline co-op like Borderlands and Doom 2!

Wow, Doom II. I played that for many an hour on my old 486 PC. Good times. Too bad I don't own a 360.

Doom II, takes me back, I remember how back then I thought it was so cool they added the double barrel shotgun... anyhow, looking forward to playing this, I forgot how to get to the Wolfenstein 3D levels, but looking forward to playing through those once more.

cod 4 is not worth 40 anymore. this is why digital games will never work. the devs are to greedy. they cut out the middle man and we dont get a hard copy yet we still pay full price...

i cant believe CoD 4 is gonna be on there for $40. its been out for how long and its still not even a platinum hit. street fighter 4 and fallout 3 were released long after CoD 4 and they are both platinum hits. what the hell makes a game platinum?

@ MiniST You've got a point. It's not like Doom II requires any demanding hardware, basically any computer released in the past decade will run Doom II perfectly. I really don't see why anyone would wait out for an XBL version of Doom II when it's been available for such a long time.

@Flint247 The Games On Demand feature is not important for what it does now. MS is just getting users acclimated to the idea and getting the infrastructure in place to eventually deliver most content digitally. Eventually, digital distribution will be the norm and MS will be ready when it is.

Can't wait to get doom II. Been waiting way too long for this. The original game alone is worth the money, but with an all new chapter it's just gonna be awsome.

Doom II with new levels is awesome, but $40 for Call of Duty? That's bit steep. I had to buy Civilization Revolution through games on demand because I couldn't find it in any local stores. That's a purchase I haven't regretted. :)

Well the prices are certainly ridiculous for last gen games. But for those of you talking about space. My physical collection is taking a lot more space than my digital one I can tell you that. I rather have the game just on my HDD taking up no real space.

I realize that downloading a game on a hard drive is a lot of space, but I honestly think games on demand is retarded. It takes like a whole day or two to download, and then you can't download anything else on your hard drive because the 1 game takes too much space up. Thanks Microsoft, but I think i'll buy my games at the local game retailer... and not worry about space

That is way to much for CoD4 and Battlefield. So far I've only got 1 game on demand and that's Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise, but only because I couldn't find it anywhere in stores lol. Might also buy GTA:SA just because that game is to badass. But Doom II will be good fun.

i cannot understand anyone paying these sort of prices for games on demand, also i don't know any xbox 360 owners who will even consider buying a game on demand due to the high price. why pay the over inflated price when retail and online shops are selling them for half the price. why can't microsoft make the games on demand same low price as shops, surely they would sell more and then would make more profit.
