Doom Designer's New FPS Crowdfunding Campaign on Hold for Now, Here's Why

Crowdfunding will begin again when Night Work Games has a demo ready to show.

Just days after the Kickstarter campaign began for Doom co-creator John Romero's new FPS Blackroom, it's now been pulled down--but only temporarily. In an update to backers (via NeoGAF), the developers at Night Work Games explained that fans wanted to see actual gameplay instead of teaser art alone. As such, funding is being paused until the development team can get a gameplay demo ready to showcase.

"The team is at work on a demo which demonstrates the kind of gameplay, look and innovative, cool features that make Blackroom truly unique--the things we've waited years to put into an FPS and which make us incredibly excited about this game," the team said.

To create a worthy demo would take more time than what was left in the campaign, so it was decided to cancel the current crowdfunding effort and launch a new one when the gameplay demo is done.

"Thanks to the community feedback, we know we should have included it at launch," the developer said.

At the time of cancellation today, the Blackroom campaign had amassed $131,052 in funding (of its $700,000 goal) from 2,287 backers. Since the campaign was canceled, supporters won't be charged. However, people who pledged the first time around will be specially rewarded.

"We will, of course, honor backer achievements in the next campaign," the studio said. "Well add an extra something for those of you who continue to support us and we will be in touch to collect your information to reward your support in the next campaign."

Blackroom is set for release on PC and Mac in winter 2018, though it's unclear if this new development will impact the final release date. For lots more on Blackroom, check out GameSpot's interview with Romero.
