Doom 2016 Confirmed For Nintendo Switch, Releases Later This Year

Doom arrives on Switch this holiday.

Doom was a sleeper hit last year, turning out to be a game much, much better than anyone expected. And if you haven't gotten around to playing it yet, you'll soon have a new platform on which you can do so: Nintendo Switch.

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, we got the out-of-nowhere announcement that Doom is headed to Nintendo's console. That's a surprise in part because there hasn't been a ton of Mature-rated content released on the platform to date, a category that Doom comfortably fits into with its gruesome violence.

The Switch version of Doom arrives sometime this holiday, although no further specifics were shared about a release date or content additions. Doom's campaign is the big highlight--and with good reason, as our Doom review notes--but the game also features a substantial multiplayer component that has only grown since release. Some big changes were made to it earlier this year, when Bethesda and developer id Software decided to make its DLC free to all players. We do know that the Switch version includes multiplayer and that it will be offered via a Day One update. It includes all of the content already released for the mode, but there's no word yet on whether there will be any further changes to it.

There's still more news to come, and you can watch the Nintendo Direct live here. You can also check out our roundup of all the news from the Nintendo Direct here.

I played the hell out of Doom 2016 on PC, very well optimize and it's nice to hear this game coming to Switch for giving gamers more options but sadly, playing any FPS game on a console is just downright asking for trouble! KB/M or GTFO!

That's great news. Hell, you can play directly arcade mode and hunt points just to see how fun it is.

Not only it's a great game, but also a proof that fun mature games that you want to play again and again can be done. And it's headed for the console of the naysayers fans that carry that moot point. Enjoy crushing demons, you'll like it, SSB fans.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this. As some others have alluded to, Im sure there will have to be some (hopefully minor) graphical concessions.

But being able to play Doom while on the John is still pretty rad. The Switch is shaping up to be a great system.

Doom eats up alot of space on the PS4, about 100GB now after the arcade mode and various patches.

Bethesda is a rather large 3rd party to have doubling, or (tripling) down on the investment on a Nintendo console.

Looks like Bethesda is doing a Capcom. And is doubling down on Nintendo ports.

@g4m1ngon: I have Doom on PS4 and I'm very satisfied with it. Graphics alone mean nothing. Doom is just plain fun. On a 7 to 9 in screen Ultra graphics are not a concern for me. I also game on PC, But I will never be gaming on my PC while taking a flight half way across the country. i also have a gaming laptop, and a XB1s . I enjoy gaming period. Whenever and wherever I can play I will. If that bothers you, that is your problem not mine.

@g4m1ngon: You are definitely a good troll. Last I head the Switch had a battery life of 5 hrs I think. Even if it was half that , that is what battery packs are for. Do you enjoy your hate and your complete bullsht talking out of your azz like this- "your gaming session will last for 12minutes only, battery will die after, probably explode of overheat". So are you 12 or 13 yrs old?

@Redsyrup: just like on any other console running it. I mean, all benchmark and hardware analysis proves that the claim was true: Switch is BARELY 10% to 15% less powerful than both PS4 and XONE.

@heqteur: No, test on a Tegra X1 put it under half an xb0ne... This is more of a testimate to the game engine that the Switch's power.

@heqteur: I love my Switch, but that is simply not true. I think people just hurt their cases when they focus on non-truths about their preferred hardware to make them sound good, instead of the many things that DO make the platform stand out. The Switch has many pros, including a great launch year library, many many interface options, sophisticated rumble, and of course portability.

The only reason you see, for example, a lot of games running at 60FPS on the Switch is because of developer priorities. Every single game could be 60FPS on the X1 and PS4 - if the devs were willing to prioritize that over resolution or eyecandy. Consequently, such numbers alone are not an objective way of comparing the raw hardware capabilities of the different platforms.

@xantufrog: the original commenter makes a good point. This game looks great on the x1 but still suffers some frame rate drops.

@muppetbabymastr: Actually the digital foundry analysis of all version of the game had the Xbox one and PS4 not dropping frames and instead dropping resolution. The game is silky smooth on all platforms, hopefully it'll be the same on the switch.

@heqteur: The Switch is 1TF @FP16 which is good enough precision for gaming. the Xbox 1 (non S) is 1.3TF @FP32. So apples to apples the Switch is 0.5 TF compared to X1 1.3 TF. Your math is a bit of at 10-15%. The reason why Zelda on Switch and Wiiu has very similar performance is because the Switch is slightly more powerful and has 4GB of memory, so slightly higher resolution textures.

Of course teraflops isn't the be all end all. But it gives you an indication on the approximate performance.

For the DOOM port they will strip it down to fit inside 4 GB of memory; probably 3.5-3 GB of memory because of the OS. It will run at 720p and undocked maybe 30 FPS.

It will be a fun port, I am going to grab it and I love my switch.

@KahnArtizt: While I don't agree with the premise that the Switch is only around 15% less powerful than the Xbox One (more like 50% less powerful, if I had to make an estimation. Maybe a little more), the reason Dragon Quest Heroes runs like ass and looks like the PS3 version is because they ported the PS3 version instead of making optimizations from the PS4 version.

@KahnArtizt: I'm assuming it has more to do with controlling all the individual enemies on the field rather than graphics. I haven't played Doom 2016 yet, but I'm going to assume you won't be fighting 30+ enemies on the screen at one time.
