Don't Expect All PlayStation Exclusives To Come To PC, Says Sony

Despite announcing Horizon Zero Dawn for PC, Sony says it won't be the rule.

With news that PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to PC, and previous news that Death Stranding is making the jump too in June, head of Sony Worldwide Studios Herman Hulst has cautioned fans from assuming all Sony exclusives will follow the same pattern.

In a Q&A posted to the PlayStation Blog, Hulst explains that bringing Sony exclusives to PC allows the company to reach new audiences not possible previously. He, however, stressed that Sony is still focused on dedicated hardware that will support exclusive software.

"I think it’s important that we stay open to new ideas of how to introduce more people to PlayStation, and show people maybe what they’ve been missing out on," Hulst explained. "And to maybe put a few minds at ease, releasing one first-party AAA title to PC doesn’t necessarily mean that every game now will come to PC. In my mind, Horizon Zero Dawn was just a great fit in this particular instance. We don’t have plans for day and date [PC releases], and we remain 100% committed to dedicated hardware."

Horizon Zero Dawn will be published on PC by Sony, while Death Stranding's publishing is being handled by 505 Games. As a comparison, Microsoft publishes all of its exclusives to Xbox One and PC on the same day, and have been doing so for years.

There's not a single intelligent gamer who wants exclusivity to end, only entitled hobbyists who care nothing about gaming. Exclusives are incredibly important for the industry and consumers. Just because you consider yourself a gamer that doesn't give to the right to access whatever software license you want, that's asinine. Exclusivity drives competition, not services or features. If it didn't, the Switch wouldn't have overtaken the Xbox One in lifetime sales in less than half the time. Sony isn't stupid, taking a previously exclusive game and adding another platform is a good move because it drives interest. What Microsoft is doing (as they have zero exclusives) is going 3rd party because they failed not once, not twice, but three times in a row.

If you seriously think exclusivity (1st party, not that 3rd party garbage) needs to end, then you need to drop gaming today before you ruin it for the true gaming community.

@reznik00: Once upon a time what you said might have been true, but the PS2, Wii, and PS3 all showed systems can compete based on features. PS2 was functioned as a DVD player right out of the box, Wii had motion controls, PS3 was a more affordable Blue ray player right out of the box as well. If exclusives died off, we'd likely see them work on making systems that don't have issues like RROD, YLOD, Joycon drift, etc.

Good, silly exclusives should be a thing of the past. All 3 consoles should just run off PC's with HDMI to TV and a personal GUI/APP and it is a win/win for everyone. And they can recommend best PC hardware for their games.

The first one of those 3 companies to make a tablet/gamepad that runs PC games along with their library will dominate the market...end of story!

@spectrexr1:Ummmm dude, the consoles are PC's regardless if you want them to be or not. If someone wanted to strictly use a PC as console with PSN or XB UI then they can do that and it should all be transparent. It is the software/ops that makes the console on a x86 architecture & Nintendo can run on x86 and have tons more power to spare compared to their existing unit. I vote for the big 3 companies to put out a good specked PC & that be the console that you hookup to the TV and for others they can use alt PC's that will simply lower the res on your game. With this unit you play PS, MS, Steam & Nint games...all games! This way they can also concentrate on adding peripherals to the experience, such as tablets, light guns...etc.

@spectrexr1: And likewise, if everyone wanted to game on modern consoles, PC gaming wouldn't be a thing. That's why exclusivity needs to die off. We shouldn't have to choose between playing on platforms that don't appeal to us or missing out on games because they're not released on our preferred platform.

@Jinzo_111887: not likewise . Without console gaming there would be no pc gaming like it is today . Every big game on PC cod battlefield gears horizon..are console games. Pc games ..dota world of Warcraft would be all we have. And compared to console gaming ..people playing AAA quality games it's no comparison. And u can see that in sales . Red dead 2 selling 20 million copies don't come from PC. Without diff platforms and hardware gaming would be very boring and unhealthy. We need all platforms and each platform needs they own specific content to bring to the table. And us gamers benefit from that. Wouldn't be a halo if there was no xbox . No uncharted without PlayStation

@spectrexr1: I didn't say anything about consoles not needing to exist. On the contrary, they can offer different features to compete. What needs to die off is exclusives. Halo, Uncharted, Zelda, etc. can release on all platforms with each offering its own features. Example, Switch being portable. Also, Halo didn't start as an Xbox exclusive. I think the first two were on PC back in the day.

@spectrexr1: Wrong. The Wii U had lots of exclusives. They didn't do the system much good when you look at how it did sales wise. Likewise, we've seen systems that sold based on features. Example, the appeal of the Switch is you can take it on the go.

@Jinzo_111887: at the end of the Wii u life it had some exclusive but. If u had a Wii u you know it went 6 7 8 months with exclusive released . And without 3rd party u basically had nothing to play that's why it failed . Think if every game on the switch was on Xbox and PS4 and PC almost no one would buy a switch . And that will be one less unique experience in the gsming world . And we need as many diff experience as we can. That's what's healthy for gaming . Because in the end if it was no exclusive only thing left would be PC and that's whack

@spectrexr1: I do have a Wii U and know a bit about the exclusives. Xenoblade X, Super Mario 3D World, and Hyrule Warriors were great. But the Wii U shows that exclusives don't matter. Also, I can imagine Switch versions of games would sell pretty well. Think about it. The Switch is providing the portable experience. You can take it with you on a train or bus. It's the PlayStation where I'm unsure about. I mean, the Xbox has an adaptive controller could turn games into a fitness routine, thus giving us a new way to look at esports, but what unique features could Sony offer is a good question. Overall, I think we'd be better off if exclusives die off so that everyone can experience all the same games regardless of platform. The platform won't determine what games you play, but how you experience them.

@spectrexr1: why is it so hard for people to just buy a 400 dollar console I don't understand why people act like if a game is on one platform they can't just buy the platform . U want a big Mac u go to McDonald's. U want a hemi engine u buy a dodge . No one says dodge should make hemi engine for all card or big Mac should be at all burget places . Only it gaming people cry about things that make business move in ever other business on Earth

@Jinzo_111887: because unlike PC Ms or Sony or Nintendo have to pay for separate servers for they games to be played on. That stops the hacking and keeps it more secure . U when Sony had free online on PS3 how terrible it was . There was no extra income coming in to help maintain the servers . They played for it out of pocket . It sucks u have to pay for online but it's a closed environment not open like PC

@spectrexr1: Wrong. It's the developers paying for servers. Tim Sweeney said it himself. He also mentioned that their 30% cut from game sales should cover it several times over.

I tell you something Sony, spear those precious games i never buy them, i know all PS4 exclusives from various gameplays put on Youtube/Twitch and while some are fun i never was not even close to go buy PS4 for them, sorry, it was something like "oh only PS4, oh well move on to waaay bigger PC exclusives library" that is waay more attractive for me than those 90% third party open world cookie cutter games.

On pc there are various startegy games, total war warhammer to name one that steal so much of my time i simply dont even want to spend on those PS4 exclusives.

An obvious reaction to M$'s play for the PC market and a way to hedge against tough years during a new console release.

As a PC player first, this is always welcome. It's one more step towards consoles becoming irrelevant, which is long overdue.

Probably going to be their strategy now of boosting sales for games/studios that need it and in attempt to get more 3rd party exclusives like Nioh and Godfall.

@reznik00: Not coming to Xbox though that's my point they are probably looking to boost the number of PC/PS4 only launches. Babylon's Fall is another one.

Even though I own both a gaming pc and PS4, I think the real winners here are the ones who don't believing in the idea of missing out on any game because they don't own the system to play on it. My life would not be any worse if I never played any of the Naughty dog games, or any game for that matter.

Part of the PC audience they did have access to before deciding to charge for online play. It's partially their own fault for making the PC audience as big as it is.

Every console game winds upon PC eventually. Either legally via Steam, or via grey methods like Emulation.
