Don't Expect A Rocksteady Superman Game At The Game Awards (Or In General)

You might have time to digitally remove a mustache or two before we get a new Superman game.

Rumors have circulated for some time now that Rocksteady Games, the developer of the core Batman Arkham series, was at work on a new Superman game. With The Game Awards coming up tonight and promising 10 new game announcements, there had been some speculation that such a project could be announced during the show. In fact, Rocksteady won't announce a new game at the show, nor is its in-development project a Superman game, according to the studio.

Rocksteady game director Sefton Hill tempered expectations on Twitter recently, stating, "Looking forward to #TheGameAwards this year! We're still hard at work in our development bunker so don't expect an announcement from @Rocksteadygames. When it's ready to show, you'll be the first to know. Spoiler: it's not Superman."

That doesn't necessarily rule out Superman being present in the studio's next game--some have their fingers crossed for a wide-ranging Justice League game--but it seems clear that it won't be a dedicated Superman game. He could of course be trying to throw fans off the scent, but that doesn't appear to be the case. You can watch The Game Awards live here on GameSpot tonight.

Rocksteady job listings from earlier this year revealed the studio is working on what it's deemed a triple-A game, as you'd expect. But what was more notable was the mention of it coming to "next generation platforms," which would suggest it's potentially years away from release.

While Rocksteady is known for its partnership with DC, rival Marvel has a new Avengers game coming from Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. Avengers 4 directors Joe and Anthony Russo were recently confirmed to be coming to The Game Awards, and while they're officially only there in the capacity of presenters, it still has fans hoping for some kind of news regarding the as-yet untitled Avengers project or the impending Avengers 4 trailer.

I am really curious to what they are working on. Loved AA, but the following games were good, but not as good in my opinion. AC had its moments, but ended really abruptly. The last one was technicaly good, but I lost interest by the end and felt a grind

Does it really matter what devs or publishers tell the press anymore? How many times have they denied the existence of something vehemently to the press only to turn around a week later just to go “AHA we are putting out this item, bet you’re surprised!”

I don't know how it's possible to make an interesting Superman game without giving him some stupid weakness, like every baddie he encounters being decked out in kryptonite, at which point you may as well just be playing as a regular non-super powered superhero.

@dzimm: I think the best option would be to develop a mix. For a lot of the game with general crime and enemies it becomes more about success where you can't be beaten and are overpowered so it is more about protecting and saving people to win. Kind of more goal oriented rather than survival oriented. Then you balance that with certain points in the game where you are up against bigger villians actually capable of hurting him at which point health management becomes a thing.

Cryatal Dynamics is doing Avengers?!! There goes that wasted opportunity. A game like that should be done by a much more capable studio. While I definitely think it should be a 3rd party game, I feel only Sony studios have what it takes to make a game like that.

Superman is my all-time favourite superhero. I'm greatly disappointed the character has yet to get one good game. Batman got several. Spidey got some really good ones, including the latest which is arguably the best ever (yes, I've played Spider-Man 2).

But Superman deserves that same love and attention to his own solo game like Batman and Spider-Man.

@RedWave247: I am so disappointed that they are not working on Superman. They were my best hope for a good Superman game in my lifetime.

A good Superman game would be cool I guess, but I don't really want them to make that. It'd be cool if it was a Judge Dredd game, but that's Rebellion.

@NTM23: Nvr thought of a Judge Dredd game. Now that you mentioned it, Cyberpunk 2077 shud've been a Judge Dredd game. I guess what I'm saying is that someone ought to make a Judge Dredd game in the vein of Cyberpunk 2077.

I would love it to be TMNT. I'm hoping WB, after Injustice 2, just has the full license now. I have no idea though. For so long I remember people wanting Rocksteady to do a TMNT game. We thought we struck gold when Platinum games got the license, but they botched it hardcore. If WB doesn't have the license to make a full TMNT game, I would love for Team Ninja to make one.

@crimsonllama: and there were a bunch of easter eggs leading to the conclusion too so it is a little disheartening to hear, but lets hope it is just a ploy lol

This could suggest that they are in fact the ones working on that Harry Potter game.

We need a game based Superman 3 - the most underrated out of all of them.

@dorog1995: They could put rings from Krypton to Earth, where the player has to navigate baby Kal's spaceship through 27.1 light years of space. And that's just the tutorial.
