Last week, Sony announced God of War III Remastered, a 1080p/60fps PlayStation 4 version of the 2010 PlayStation 3 action game. Some wondered if Sony might also be planning to re-release other God of War games for PS4. But that's not in the cards, according to Sony.

No Caption Provided

"No plans for others in the franchise to bring over," Sony Santa Monica's Aaron Kaufman said on the PlayStation Blog in response to a fan who wondered if God of War 1 or 2 might be next.

Kaufman, a senior community strategist for Sony Santa Monica, also explained the general thought process behind bringing God of War III to Sony's new console.

"Remasters often help us open the door to new players who perhaps did not play God of War 3 5 years ago, but who we can bring it to on the PlayStation 4," he said. "People often forget, the more players we can bring into a franchise, the better for everyone. At Santa Monica Studio, we'd like as many PlayStation fans to experience our games as possible, form generation to generation."

In addition to God of War III Remastered, Sony Santa Monica is working on a brand new, unannounced PS4 game. God of War II director Cory Barlog is working on this title, described so far only as "freaking huge."

God of War III Remastered launches July 14. It will be available at physical retailers and through the PlayStation Store for $40. For more on the upcoming game, check out some images in the gallery below.

I totally again with you. It took me a whole month to decide whether to buy XBox One or PS4. Finaly I decided to go with PS4 and the main reason for this because GOW III remastered was released for PS4. One of the top notch games ever. I was really disappointed they did not remaster 1 and 2. Till now, I played GOW 3 like tons of times and I still keep it, and won't sell it. Other games after I finish with them, I resell them to Game Stop. I want to own the whole sequel of GOW. I read yesterday that GOW 4 is ganna be released in 2017. I can't wait for it. Still though, Sonny should respect the fans of GOW and they should remaster 1 and 2 ASAP. I'm willing to buy one game for $40, even if their story is old, but it's never ending entertainment.

God of War 1 and 2 may come to the PS4 by way of PS2 support through a firmware update. Either from PSN or PS Now. Just check out playstationlifestyle .net.

If they want more people to get into the franchise the smart thing to do would be to release the entire series on PS4.

<< LINK REMOVED >> LOL most of the remastered games out there are by 3rd parties. So far Sony has the fewest Remastered exclusive titles.

BTW newsflash for you -- buying games is completely optional. It's opt in or opt out.

Given MS did the whole makeover for Halo, I was pretty disappointed Sony didn't follow suit with Kratos. I would have 1 upped Microsoft and remastered the whole series in the God of War III engine (ported to PS4) and stitched each title together into one long game called God of War: Epoch. :)

I believe God of War HD, God of War II HD, and God of War: Ascension are all on Sony's PS Now streaming service. You wouldn't want to have them detract from that gaming lineup and knock a few points for subscribing to it, would you?

Personally, I don't mind remasters. However, if you're going to remaster for "current gen" hardware, give people the opportunity to have it all inclusive - all the titles in the series from prior hardware generations. Not just one. Either way, they'll do what they do.

You have no evidence to support your claim, there are far more new titles on the next gen systems then their are remakes. Sony should remaster any great game from the PS3 era, they are picking up a great deal of previous Xbox players that never got a chance to play them.

That is because we had a lot of really great games on the PS3 but the graphics had limitations, especially the 3d party multiplats. Just like great movies and classic albums, when new hardware comes along, it allows you to experience the media in superb high quality. Remasters enable that process.

Game graphics age rapidly, but gameplay lives on forever. Remasters allow the game to achieve immortality and still be fun to play in the future. It's all optional, so no need to go on a moral crusade over it. The new games are still being made.

Like i know right, many hated Ascencion but to me it was actually good and pretty underrated! I had more fun playing through it's single player adventure than i did when playing through that of III (not kidding here)!!

Ascension was shorter and the story didn't seem to be nearly as strong as God of War III. I like them both but 3 definitely takes the cake IMHO.

You know. More games need to the "PREVIOUSLY ON" type loading screens.

Absolutely gorgeous game on the PS3, can hardly wait to see what it will look like on the PS4. The studio did a superb, amazing job. Smart move by sony, as the design and aesthetics of the original God of War will most likely show by now. Definite Pre-Order.

Such B.S.

All PS3 exclusives need remasters as the PS3 cannot be emulated and likely will never be for at least another decade.

I'm not torn up about any God of War prior to 3 not being remastered on the PS4 as the PS2 can be emulated pretty well and we can already play those games at native 1080p/60 or higher thanks to PS2 emulation on PC.

The 720p + 30 FPS limitations of the PS3 holds back its exclusives too much and emulation won't be able to lift those restrictions for a loooong time. So Ascension is going to be stuck as the worst looking God of War game out of the entire franchise thanks to the PS3's crappy hardware holding it back.

I would prefer to play God of War 1, 2 (and PSP games) on the God of War III engine for PS4 rather than using an up-scaler emulator.

PS3 crappy hardware? LOL Most of us don't require 1080p/60fps to play console games. We wouldn't have been console gamers from the previous generation if we had aritificial resolution and frame rate quotas. Good games can be made outside of 60fps. Think outside the PC Elitist box for once. The fact that console gaming survives and thrives is evidence that 60fps isn't a necessity to entertain people.

Can PC people speak of their opinions without disguising them as facts?

No excuse to not have it and Ascension together as they're both PS3 era installments. Ascension should have been a PS4 launch title anyway. That game was POINTLESS on PS3 though it shouldn't have existed in the first place. The Remaster for GOW3 would make more sense if Ascension was a launch title as well.

Ascension was the vehicle to deliver the online mode that they were considering with God of War III. It was quite a bit of work they put into it but wasn't ready for prime time when GOW3 shipped. A new director moved in and worked it up into a full game release. I enjoyed Ascension but not quite as much as GOW3, the online was fairly unique and fun to play with groups.

God of War 1 & 2 were wrapped into a PS2 emulator and upscaled for PS3. Remaster it is not.

That's a bit pointless then if it's just God of War III. A "God of War Trilogy" on PS4 at least with the three main games (1, 2 & 3) in one bundle would be a better idea. I don't know about anyone else but a trilogy isn't something I would start at the end.

You are completely omitting that PS2 was the game console of choice in that generation. There are likely plenty of Xbox 360 players that played God of War 1 & 2 but fewer that played God of War 3. So in that respect this makes sense.

A lot of people did go from PS2 to Xbox 360 yes. Both games did well on PS2 but there are always people who didn't play them back then for whichever reason but are interested now. That's why I would have preferred a full trilogy remaster.

I guess if they're trying to reach a new audience for the next installment then remastering every games and waiting for new players to finish those games before getting IV would take forever.

I still think $40 is to much for this. It really seams like a cash grab. You could get the game for $5 on the PS3, and the only thing different is the Res.

It won't stay at $40 forever. My crystal ball says the price will drop a month after release and soon after will end up free on the Playstation Plus service. Sony is remastering this game to reach a new audience and feed their PP service to help us wait for bigger upcoming game.

New AAA games now take forever to reach market so we need to have something in the meantime.

Or whenever they decide it's time to announce a new GoW they'll toss in GoW 3 remastered for free on PS Plus to drum up interest again. Like how they conveniently gave out Ground Zeroes for free three months before Phantom Pain is released.
