Does Battlefield 2042 Have Cross-Play And Cross-Progression?

The shooter will be an enormous all-multiplayer Battlefield game, but will you be able to play with friends on all platforms?

Battlefield 2042 is ditching a single-player campaign and will focus exclusively on multiplayer this time around, and developer DICE is even allowing for 128-player matches in certain modes. With that many players, however, will Battlefield 2042 have cross-play so you can enjoy the game with those on other systems, or will you be stuck only playing with those on the same one you own? Unlike some other games, the answer isn't so simple.

Yes, Battlefield 2042 will have cross-play support, but it's going to look a little bit different than it does with some other games, like Call of Duty: Vanguard or Halo Infinite. Because only PC and current-gen systems support 128-player games, cross-play will be split into two groups. PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S players will all be able to play together, while Xbox One and PS4 players will also be able to play together. The two groups will not be able to play with each other.

For those who prefer to disable it, they can also turn off cross-play and only play against those on their own platform. This will be more of a viable option for current-gen players who don't want to be at a disadvantage against PC players.

Does Battlefield 2042 have cross-progression?

Yes, Battlefield 2042 will have cross-progression, meaning all the experience and gear you unlock during your time on one platform will carry over to another, should you choose to switch.

Additionally, the game has what EA calls "cross-commerce," which essentially means anything you buy on one platform--like DLC or cosmetics--will also go with you to new platforms. Of course, you will have to buy the actual game again if you want to play it on a second platform.

Battlefield 2042 releases on November 19 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Those who bought either the Ultimate or Gold editions can begin playing one week earlier.
