Doctor Who video game materialising

The popular sci-fi BBC TV show will be getting a video game in time for the holiday season.

Some 43 years after it premiered on television, the popular series Doctor Who will beam onto the PC, PlayStation 2, DS, and mobile phones this holiday season. Very little is known so far about the game, which is currently being advertised inside the new Doctor Who card pack of the popular Top Trumps card game.

Eidos will be publishing the game, which is being developed by its Ironstone Partners studio. Eidos would not reveal any further details on the title, except to say it would be "extremely loyal to the Top Trumps brand."

There is a huge variety of Top Trumps card games with pop-culture themes, including WWE, Manchester United Football Stars, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. In each, cards feature characters or vehicles with scores for attributes such as speed and stamina. The starting player chooses a category and uses his or her top-scoring card, and all other players must try to beat it with one of their cards. The winner then collects cards from all other players, and the ultimate winner is the person who ends up with the whole pack of cards.

Doctor Who is a British science-fiction TV series which has been running since 1963. The star of the series is the mysterious character The Doctor, who is the last surviving member of an alien race called the Timelords. A variety of actors have played the role of The Doctor since the start of the series, as Timelords have the ability to regenerate into a different form instead of dying. Actors who have played the role include Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Colin Baker, and the current star, David Tennant. The show has become a cultural touchstone in the UK, with such foes as the Cybermen and the Daleks becoming icons amongst the sci-fi set.

Doctor Who is a great show to be enjoyed by all who like sci-fi but the freedom in the show is what i like best about it and i think a game will take that away with fixed time period to travels, simple gameplay e.g. levels 1-16 and crap boss fights (level 7 fight cybermen) just keep it a show.

The most recent iterations of Doctor Who have sucked hard, so color me unexcited about this news.

This will most likely be terrible, but if by some miracle, it isn't this could be an awesome game.

FANTASTIC! I'm hoping for the best. I'm a huge fan of the show, and I'll end up buying it regardless. (unless it's Superman bad. I'm a huge Superman fan as well, and you couldn't give me that last video game for free)

@ F4II3_1 I too am disappointed. The possibilities for an IP like this could result in one of the greatest games ever created. Still, I'm just glad its finally going to surface in any game form. Like I said, action/RPG would be the best.

And so yet another deserving license will be defaced and poorly used. You can tell this is going to happen simply because the game is supposed to come around the holidays yet we're just now hearing about it. Anything that is going to be worth it usually shows up well before its release.

Its about time, no pun intended. I've been a loyal fan of this, my favorite program, for the past 27 years-since I was 8. My collection is absolute, as I am current with the show (thanks to bit torrents). I can understand why they'd be putting it on PS2 (I'll be playing it on PS3), since that install base will maximize sales of a show not very well known my a large chunk of the gaming demographic, but this should be an Action/RPG, not a card game. Still, hats off to Eidos for realizing the potential in this IP, and giving it a chance. Eidos, you have just become one of my favorite developers (I already liked you for Laura & Kain).

It looks like theyve picked the systems with the cheapest development costs and the most mass appeal - this is going to be very bad...

The only problem I see with this is that there's a good chance the game is going to be bad. But at the same time, it could end up being a good game, we'll just have to wait and see.

I've watched Dr.Who since Tom Baker was the doctor, IMO he was the best Dr.Who. Sci-Fi shows it, and I think BBC America does too. The only way to do it justice is to have it half puzzle solving on the Mensa level, with a bit of exploration and a causation branching story. It could be good if done right. Good luck!

Ironstone Partners already have one Top Trumps in development ( a card based game called 'Top Trumps: Dogs and Dinosaurs') Expect this to be very similar, but with a Doctor Who theme. There was another Doctor Who game that came in 1992 for the Amiga called Dalek Attack, so this isn't a new licence. Let's hope it does the series justice.

"Why waste resources on PS2 game development ?" might have something to do with some 120 million (roughly) ps2 that are hanging around world wide maybe.

Great, PC version will be butt ugly because they are dumb enough to make it for PS2 and not next generation consoles. LAME.

It's funny that this isn't really shown in the US, so it's bound to get lame jokes on this page from them.

Fail. Dr.Who series is ACE but the game is bound to fail. How many crappy video game spin offs do we need before someone finally realises?!

This is a show you either liked it a lot or absolutely can't stand it. I hated it so I would never buy this game, as would most gamers that I know.

DR WHO IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV RIGHT NOW, HEROES AND LOST ARE SCARED, SILLY LITTLE KITTENS NEXT TO THE INCREDIBLE NEW WHO. TORCHWOOD IS ALSO VERY GOOD AND BETTER THAN HEROES OR LOST, EASILY. SEEK THEM OUT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A BROWNCOAT OR WHEDONHEAD. -TK
