Now Playing: Baldur's Gate 3 Possibly Coming From Divinity Original Sin Dev - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Larian Studios, the developer behind Divinity: Original Sin and Original Sin 2, has dropped what appears to be a teaser for a new Baldur's Gate.

The official site has updated with a "III" logo, though the stylized lettering isn't quite unique enough to necessarily identify it as belonging to Baldur's Gate. As some savvy Twitter users have pointed out, though, the metadata refers to the image as "BaldursGate_logo_III_retouched." It's possible this wasn't meant to be seen and is something of an inside joke, but it could also mean the studio is bringing Baldur's Gate back. The timing of this tease could suggest that the studio is preparing a reveal at E3 2019.

The series has been relatively quiet recently. An Enhanced Edition port of the original Baldur's Gate was released in 2013, and a new expansion was released in 2016, under Atari and the Canadian publisher Beamdog. The last numbered Baldur's Gate game released in 2000, developed by BioWare.

The Divinity games have gained critical acclaim of their own. GameSpot's review of Original Sin 2 awarded it a 10/10, which would make the studio a good fit for reviving the classic series.

"From lonely farmhouses through pitched battles with gods in far-flung dimensions, Divinity: Original Sin II is one of the most captivating role-playing games ever made in both its original and Definitive incarnations, with the latter proving that even the most complicated role-players can be ported successfully to gamepad-limited consoles," Brett Todd wrote. "This immaculately conceived and emotion-wrought fantasy world, topped by brilliant tactical combat, make it one of the finest games of recent years, and it remains an instant classic in the pantheon of RPG greats."

Welp, here's how this plays out. Larian Studios either makes the god-of-all-gods of isometric RPGs and slap the label Baldur's Gate 3 on it, or they crash and burn under the immense weight of gamer expectation and anticipation. Good luck with that.

@jsprunk they allready have an insanely good engine running, what they get with the BG license is the ruleset from AD&D and the heavy lore and beastery from forgotten realms, what they basicly need to do is to write one hell of a good story for that setting and they will be golden. Th thrill of meeting Elminster and Drizzt d'urden in BG1 was amazing for all of us that played the tabletop versions and read into the lore.

@ormgaard: Baldur's Gate was phenomenal at release, not least of which was due to it being a superior game to almost anything on the market at the time. Releasing a sequel to that series in 2019/2020 as a differently skinned version of the Divinity: OS series is nowhere even close to matching the innovation that brought about the original series in 1998.

If Larian makes a BG3, this thing better be better than anything out, or it's just going to end being a lukewarm sequel that no one really needed. I want to see "Half Life 2"-level of quality and innovation, where the game is still mind-blowing to play 10 years later.

Hmm, I'm more on the boat for Original Sin III.

But Baldur Gate fans have been waiting long enough I suppose. And Larian Studios will clearly make it the best in that series. Extremely talented team, D:OSII is one of the greatest games I've ever played.

@metin3191: You must be young. If you seriously are more hyped for Divinity 3 over Baldur's Gate 3 just because Baldur's Gate is an "old" game, then you need to rethink your priorities. I guess Nintendo should stop making Mario sequels, too?

@Neo_Sarevok:

Probably why modern gaming is a little shit in comparison to back in the day. Kids love their rinse and repeat games, just continuous reskins of other games.

@metin3191: It's a classic with a dedicated following. And the CRPG genre Baldur's Gate popularized has had a resurgence lately. D:OS probably wouldn't exist if not for BG. If Larian actually has the opportunity to make a Baldur's Gate game, I'm sure they'd go for it.

@Sound_Demon: Not everything is a insult on your damn intelligence. If you took a handful of 100 readers of this site, I doubt half of them could tell you the name of studio that made divinity. Its gamespot.com, not CRPGenthusiasts.com. They want to make a headline that will catch the interest of as many people as possible. This is logical.

@robbehG: Yes not everything, but I'd expect the average gamer even half witted to remember the name of the studio that makes one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Everyone is ready to suckle on CDPR but you're telling me these same people don't know Larian studios? If they don't so what, this article wouldn't be for them. Don't compromise with easy to read/digest click baity titles.

@Sound_Demon: Yeah but the quality of the game doesn't always translate into recognition. Also I'm sure many people played the game but didn't pay full attention to who made it. Its such a non-issue, its unnecessary to take offense to it.

**I didn't like Baldur's Gate 2**

back around the year 2000 I almost lost my live in GF(now my wife of 20 years next month)

*I had 2 giant bed-sheets tac'd to the roof for a giant ANTI-GLARE square around my computer desk

for Baldur's Gate 1 & Icewind Dale 1..

I took my 2 week vacation and never returned..

I came within a pube of not caring if my trophy GF bounced the F out...

truth is it was Baldur's Gate 2 that brought me back to my reality/senses and not my caring for her or whatevs…

(if anyone wans to hear more of this story from a funny pov then ask me)

**Baldur's Gate 2 made the char two OP and the enemies we're STR8 ^ bullet sponges..

All Bioware did was jack the enemies health and resistances...

This was clearly why I wento into KOTOR1 = 'in Bioware I blindly trust'

How ironic that Bioware Is now a company I wont even rent a game from on launch day, let alone pre order..

~So the good news is it's not Bioware making this game..

the other bad news for me is I need isometric to look similar in style to POE/Diablo3 for it to be enjoyed.

But that's an IMO for sure...

*I wasn't alone in Baldur's Gate 2 opinon at that time..

1 friend in my nerd click swore by it and the 3 of us we're annoyed at how it dragged on and mad ethe story go from a typical villain to a powerful supernatural all powerful dude & you chase said dude to hell..

I made it about 85% of the way before I took Girlfriend on a corny lame-@dd trip to Disney MagicKingdom...

*Why didn't I t I use Aluminum foil on the South Florida windows instead of a sheet tac'd to the ceiling?

Cause GF wasn't having It & it was only a 1-bedroom apt..

10/10 gaming in the early 2000's...

Please, let this be true... Please. Larian, inxile and Obsidian are the only competent devs nowadays when it comes to western RPG's and Larian is certainly the best out of them. This is a match made in heaven.

@Berserk8989 Inxile maybe, Larian definitely, Obsidian... no way: If I wanted a well written but bug ridden, poorly designed RPG I would go to Obsidian.

@twogirlsonecub: Their last few outings haven't really been bug ridden at all. This seems like an opinion ripped from 2011. And I'm sure with the massive resources of Microsoft behind them, this trend should continue.

@robbehG You're probably right, that's about the time when I just couldn't take their games anymore and anything with Obsidian on the box was poison to me. I did buy Pillars of Eternity for PS4 when it came out but that was purely as support for western RPGs on consoles, I haven't even touched it yet.

@Berserk8989: Obviously not compared with super mainstream AAA studios.

Check out...

Iron Tower (Age of Decadence/Dungeon Rats/upcoming Colony Ship game)

Owlcat games (Pathfinder Kingmaker)

Stygian Software (UnderRail)

Logic Artists (Expeditions Conquistador/Viking)

Harebrained Schemes (Shadowrun games)

Heroic Fantasy Games (Knights of the Chalice 1/2)

Golden Era Games (Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar)

Numantian Games (Lords of Xulima)

Whalenought Studios (Serpent in the Staglands/Copper Dreams)

There's also some upcoming ones from first time devs that look promising...

ZA/UM studio (Disco Elysium)

Ceres Games (Realms Beyond)

Legendworks (Call of Saregnar)

Silver Lemur Games (Legend of Amberland)

And that's not all, as there's more I could add to both lists.

I need to get cracking again on D:OS2 again...I took a break and haven't gone back to it in months. It is one of my favorite games of all time. Hope 3 is on the way...

BG was great as well...I vaguely remember trying multiplayer on BG2 with my buddy and I seem to remember it not working well...this was obviously a lifetime ago (on dialup before :gasp: broadband)..but it was still a great game.

@gotrekfabian: 4e’s my favorite, and I think it’d convert to a BG style video game the best.

But I’m sure WotC will want to use the version they’re currently selling.
