Disney's Newest Movie Will Lose $100 Million In Theaters, Report Says

Disney's Strange World bombed at the box office, was one of Disney's worst starts for any movie in recent times.

Disney's newest movie, the animated film Strange World, was a box office disappointment and could lose $100 million during its theatrical run.

Variety reports that the movie made $11.9 million over the weekend in the US and $18.6 million for the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period--this missed expectations of up to $40 million.

With a three-day start of $11.9 million, Strange World had one of the worst starts domestically for any Disney film in recent times. It did pace ahead, however, of West Side Story ($10.5 million), though that film debuted during the earlier days of the pandemic.

Last year, Disney released Encanto during the Thanksgiving weekend, and it earned $27.2 million for the three-day weekend and $40 million for the extended five-day period.

Sources told Variety that Strange World will lose at least $100 million from its theatrical run. Sources said the film needs to make $360 million to break even to cover the $180 million production costs and millions in marketing and distribution fees. The film will eventually no doubt come to Disney+ and other at-home video-on-demand services, but Variety's sources said Strange World will have a difficult time turning a profit.

Disney is going to be just fine. Not every film the company releases will be a success. And don't worry too much about Disney. The company's 2022 films have collectively earned more than $3 billion at the box office already this year, and Avatar: The Way of Water's release is still coming up.

Strange World features the voices of Jake Gyllenhaal, Gabrielle Union, Lucy Liu, Dennis Quaid, and Alan Tudyk.
