Dishonored 2 Review Roundup

So far, the critical reception is very positive.

Dishonored 2 released late last week, and the critics have started delivering their verdicts on the stealth-action romp.

Arkane's followup to 2012's Dishonored picks up many years after the events of the first game. Players can choose to control Corvo or Emily Kaldwin, who both employ unique powers. Corvo's more closely stick to what he was capable of in the first game, while Emily introduces a bunch of new powers such as Domino, which allows her to link enemies so they all share the same fate.

GameSpot -- 8/10

"If you use your powers creatively and judiciously, you can be in complete control. It feels exceptionally empowering, especially since when you mess up, you realize your enemies really are smart and powerful enough to kill you quickly. Dishonored 2 might lack challenge in its later levels, but the basic tools are a joy to play with regardless. And with two characters and two basic play styles to choose from--both of which noticeably impact the story and the world as you go--there's a lot of longevity to be wrung from the campaign. It's an incredible shame you can't restart the campaign with all your powers intact once you beat the game, but you can, at least, bring up old saves, adjust the difficulty, and see what unfolds." -- Scott Butterworth [full review]

NZGamer -- 9.4/10

"In the end, I love this game. While it's a slow starter plot-wise, Dishonored 2 builds up wonderfully to a satisfying conclusion, with plenty of memorable challenges along the way. But more than anything else, it's fun. It's a gorgeous, deep, enjoyable piece of work, and I highly recommend it if you like stealth, exploration, or cool steampunk Portugal. See you in the Void." -- Brian McDonald [full review]

IGN -- 9.3/10

"With two unique sets of skills to play with across 10 themed chapters that keep things interesting and a gorgeous, evocative world that feels alive, Dishonored 2 is a remarkable experience. Though I would have liked a little bit more originality in its central story, which again revolves around a usurper to the throne, it's the stories that I've created on my own using its many creativity-enabling powers that I'll remember, every graceful, fumbling, and hilarious one of them. I'm compelled to create many more in the months to come." -- Lucy O'Brien [full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 4.5/5

"In the end, any criticisms of Dishonored 2 feel like nitpicks of a thoroughly entertaining, mechanically complex, impressively realized world, just like the first. My primary playthrough as a stealthy, non-violent Emily clocked in at over 15 hours--and though I sometimes found myself wishing for more character development in the overcrowded story, I was never for a moment bored with the otherworldly abilities of my agile assassin. With the potent possibilities inherent to its gameplay, ample replay value, and mesmerizing environments, Dishonored 2 certainly feels like more of the same--and that's a very good thing indeed." -- Lucas Sullivan [full review]

Twinfinite -- 4.5/5

"Dishonored 2 is the bigger, badder, and bolder version of the original game, thanks to its densely packed world and wonderfully enjoyable mechanics. Even though the experience only has nine main missions, the amount of replayability and exploration offered allows this title to always feel exciting. This is only enhanced by the interesting characters and story that string each level together, which makes Dishonored 2 a more than worthy sequel to the first title. Even with a few technical hiccups and lack of new powers for Corvo, this trip to Karnaca is one worth taking again and again--just make sure to steer clear of Bloodflies." -- Collin MacGregor [full review]

CGMagOnline -- 8/10

"While Dishonored 2 takes multiple strides to improve off of the original I'm left feeling only half of them hit the mark. The gameplay and the world hooked me in exactly as before, and I had high hopes for the story, but the decisive part Arkane Studios wasn't able to execute on was the choice between playing as one of two characters. Since they have to experience the exact same missions, Corvo and Emily's monotone dialogue and lack of diverse endings only resulted in them feeling merely like different ability sets when I reached the credits for a second time. I believe Dishonored 2 will still be loved by fans of the original who have been craving for more since the game's reveal at E3, just don't expect an Assassin's Creed II jump in quality." -- Cole Watson [full review]

I reckon this is gonna be one of those kinds of games that most gamers wait to hit the bargain bin before buying, am I right?

Here's to hoping games will now be released fully polished and not running at 25 fps in cities without rushed patches.

I look forward to not playing this game like the rest of other awesome games I bought but never had time to play: Fallout 4, Witcher 3+Season Pass, Dying Light The Following, Far Cry 4, Bloodborne + DLC...the list is too big and makes me wanna cry just thinking about it.

@HisDudeness28: Well I'm still in school (again) so I've had a lot of time and I have beaten everything from your list except Dying Light because it looked pretty average to me and I can assure you that The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne are two of the greatest games I have ever played, but Fallout 4 and Far Cry 4 are just above average. I did not rush through The Witcher 3, so to do almost all of the quests and sidequests (not including horse races, gwent, and some of the treasure hunts) I got the whole game and the two expansions done in about 96 hours. I did not skip any of the cutscenes as well so that should give you a rough estimate about its length (think I played on the second highest difficulty). Bloodborne + DLC takes about 75 hours give or take. Very well done both of them.

Fallout and Far Cry are great games for like $20 on sale if you can get them that low (Far Cry should be anyway), but funny enough, they are both similar to each other. Fallout 4 has devolved to the level of having little to no RPG elements in it like 3 and NV had so your choices mean nothing. It becomes an open world kill everything kind of game and Far Cry has always been like that too so yeah...The story sucks in both games but they are both fun enough to play, just not masterpieces like TW3 and Bloodborne.

Long rant, I know. I'm in a writing kind of mood right now.

@HisDudeness28: I got about 10 hours into the Fallout 4 wasteland and haven't gotten back to it yet. Skyrim SE is still in it wrapper. Got stuck into Deus Ex for a couple of weeks, but still many hours left in that game. Almost knocked over the Titanfall 2 campaign.

Dishonoured 2 is a definite maybe to pick up.

@HisDudeness28: Dude, I'm right there with you lol. Fallout 4 + season pass, Witcher 3 + season pass, Dying Light, Far Cry 4 and Bloodline... all exactly the same, I'd add Batman Arkham Knight to that list for me as well. I've just started continuing my play through of the Witcher, I'd say I was 50% complete. But that'll go on hold when I pick up Dishonored 2 and Watch Dogs 2 tomorrow. lol. The cycle of life continues.

lol....the Reviewers are on it, nobody worry :P The first one I found a marginal game, so I would have to be pretty bored to line this one up....even Bethesda messes up sometimes it appears.

@Daelusca: You're in the minority though, the first one was already very well received and this one seems to have topped it. Don't doubt some will not like it, but apparently very few...

@livedreamplay: lol...in the minority? Reviews are meaningless as they are, in one way or another, always paid for...the # of games that received high "critic" ratings but were absolute balls is limitless (MGSV by chance?). The first game sold, what,a few million copies, if that; and this game sold, in it's first week, 40% less than the original in the UK (the only info we have so far).....but I'm in the minority? lol

@Daelusca: You're in the minority because both critics and fans loved the game. As opposed to games like Watch Dogs where the critics scored it higher and fans bashed it into the ground, this one received praise all around. The "reviews are paid" thing can only drag it so much. And you shouldn't drag sales into this, we all know games like Watch Dogs sold 10 million copies or Call of Duty breaking records yearly, just because it sells doesn't mean it's well received and vice versa.

So yeah... minority...

@livedreamplay: So, your standard for a game's worth is if the "fans" loved it.....I will give you a moment to ponder that. Look if a game does not sell particularly well, the "majority" does not see its worth, irrespective if "fans" love it....lmao

Just deserved. Dishonored 2 is really an awsm stealth action game with a rich and beautifully crafted world filled with tons of details. This is a trilogy in the making.
