Dishonored 2 Director Comments on PC Issues

"There were certain combinations of things that we just didn't expect."

Dishonored 2 received strong reviews, but the game's release earlier this month had a hiccup in that the PC version faced a series of issues. Many of these have been fixed with subsequent patches, including the latest, 1.2, which had more than 100 fixes in it, according to director Harvey Smith.

No Caption Provided

In a wide-ranging interview with Glixel, Smith discussed the PC launch issues, which he said cropped up despite "extensive" testing.

"There were certain combinations of things that we just didn't expect, despite extensively testing the game; very high-end CPUs with low-end GPUs, and older drivers, things like that," Smith said. "I'm a PC gamer. There is nothing like running on a super high-end PC. But it's also the most varied platform to support. It's way, way more complicated than consoles."

Some of Dishonored 2's PC issues included things ranging from low or unstable framerates to blurry graphics to mouse sensitivity issues.

Also in the Glixel interview, Smith was asked if Dishonored 2's Meagan Foster could become a playable character in upcoming DLC. Smith didn't confirm or deny anything, but acknowledged that "Meagan's a popular character."

"In terms of representation, a number of people have told me, 'I'm so happy you have a character who is lesbian or bi'--more accurately, bi, I think, but mostly lesbian," Smith added. "And just a character who is a person of color. It's very meaningful that people can look into games and see characters in leadership positions who are handled well, who are interesting people first and foremost."

The full Glixel interview is incredibly fascinating and in-depth; read it here.

Bethesda recently revealed that Dishonored 2 will receive a content update next month to introduce a New Game + mode. For more on Dishonored 2, check out GameSpot's review.

It's a great game but the performance issues were inexcusable. I bought the game even after hearing about the issues because it sounded too good to pass up. I was right but the framedrops from 80+ fps to 45fps were more than a little rediculous.

The framerate is far more stable now, thankfully, but this guy is lying through his teeth to say that this never came up during testing. I have a pretty beefy system (i7 4770k oc'd to 4.5ghz, 16gb RAM and a gtx1080) and should get far better(or at least smoother) performance from what I was getting(maxed out @1440p with scaling off).

@shiel44: I'm having this same problem with skyrim remastered and I have a gtx 1080 founders and an i7 6700k. The game is literally unplayable and the frame drops from 90 to 10 every 30 seconds especially if any menus come up. Half of these devs and publishers are fraudulent crooks now.

@Techtroll: Do you use Gsync? I haven't played it in a while but upon release the forced Vsync didn't play well with my Gsync monitor and caused some unreal amounts of stuttering. I had also fixed the drops although for the life of me I can't remember what the hell I did lol.

"There were certain combinations of things that we just didn't expect, despite extensively testing the game; very high-end CPUs with low-end GPUs, and older drivers, things like that"

:< CAN I TRUST THIS STATEMENT. TONS of people would of had rigs you guys were using. Its varied, but there is a middle common ground that most or many people have. Like 8Gb ram, a middle of the road GPU, a certain majority CPU. There are analytics that can be used to find out this information. Even STEAM Hardware stats have a massive majority hardware statistic. Like its massive. It goes from like a few percent with low end hardware or high end, to like 80% have this or that type of hardware. If the majority of people are having issues, they must of seen it before lauch day. I reckon game developers know, before release day. They just don't get any repercussions or are ever EVER held accountable. EVER. If they were held accountable in a court, i think that statement, would CHANGE real quick. Like Sean Murray just got away with literally lying about multiplayer in a game that millions purchased. The question i have is, should game developers be able to get away with this? If i bought a bag of chips that didnt have the correct flavour in them, you send them back and the chip making company sometimes gives you boxes and boxes of chips for free, To say sorry. This HUGE multibillion dollar industry should be held to a higher standard. Games arent exactly cheap as far as entertainment goes, nor are they cheap and easy to make. If you are willing to make a game over 3 years, what's another 6 months (yes its money, but they just took 3 years and spent MILLIONS, might aswell get it right) just to iron out all the issues?

The next one :>

'I'm so happy you have a character who is lesbian or bi'--more accurately, bi, I think, but mostly lesbian," Smith added. "And just a character who is a person of color"

:< REALLY? I don't give a sht , does it serve the STORY and universe you are creating. Same problem I have with Ghostbusters. The creators had a gender swapping mission, it has nothing to do with creative integrity or artistic value. If its in there just for the sake of "Oh its so awesome you have gays and lesbians in your game" get F%&@!*!!!!!

Sure PC has multiple configurations but an engine based on ID Tech 5 was surly asking for trouble, Doom runs amazing on ID Tech 6.

This is just code for we want Steam users to beta test our custom engine for PCs

How does this guy keep getting work? After the travesty that was DX: Invisible War, this clown should never have been allowed to work on PC games again.

You only have to look as far as the masterpiece, Witcher 3, to know that PC games can be better than consoles if you have talent.

@Barighm: It was incredibly fun, but it did have some issues. People forget about the issues once all the patches are in, which is why devs can get away with it so easily.

It was definitely a masterpiece tho.

lol going with the "It's so HARD!" WB Batman excuse huh. See, this is why competent companies develop games on PC, THEN port to consoles, not the other way around. You guys are getting what you deserved. You are lying to our faces with your "extensive testing" nonsense. You tested consoles first, just like WB did with Batman, and the PC was an afterthought.

"Dishonored 2 received strong reviews"

By game journos? Because I see it has horrible user ratings on metacritic and more importantly, Steam.

@sellingthings: Yep. Devs have actually said it's not the fault of consoles, but low tier PC's. Dunno why PC gamers always assume everyone is rocking 1080's and 6700k's. It has always been lowest common denominator and that hasn't changed on PC.

It's not that complicated Arkane , just take a look at Gears of War 4 , game runs smooth like a butter , a game that is exclusive to win store and it's not even on steam , better don't rush it next time - Yeah I'm talking about Prey -

extensive testing my ass.. they clearly didn't test at all just light batman arkham knight... and now its easier to ask for forgiveness... this is becoming too much the norm for PC ports.. and people should seriously stop supporting shitty ass ports like these.

@twerkloak: I usually wait at LEAST three months before I purchase a single player game on my PC because situations like these are far too common. I don't have any sympathy for people who pre-order games and then find out the game doesn't work properly at launch. How many times does this need to happen before people clue in?

My biggest complaint for this game, even on consoles, is it isn't at 60fps. It's a first person title and those play and feel terrible at 30 fps. It's also quite dark, poorly lit, and a bit blurry throughout (even on the Pro), and considering how much emphasis is put into finding items and exploring nooks and crannies, it's really ruining the experience for me.

I don't think I'll be finishing it...

I can only imagine the disappointment for those who bought it on PC hoping for 30 fps and it's still unachievable.

@John_Read: They used the shitty idtech 5 engine (the turd that powered games like The Evil Within and Rage) for this game instead of Unreal Engine 4 or idtech 6 (DOOM engine).

@dirthurts: They did use a new engine (developed in-house I believe), but for the life of me I can't figure out WHY. Seems they could have just used Unreal 3 again, I mean even Arkham Knight uses that and it looks gorgeous, and whatever they're using in D2 doesn't look leagues better than D1 anyhow. It's also not like they needed a new engine to support some newer game mechanics because it plays just like D1 (which is not a bad thing imo!).

I just don't know what reasoning was used for developing an entirely new engine (that feels very similar to Unreal 3 which was used in D1) and then releasing the game before the kinks were worked out of it.

@nl_skipper: It's some variation/ modification of the Doom engine (the id logo shows up upon boot). But, like you mentioned, I don't see why. Maybe it was some financial reason? I don't know.

I've always been happy with Unreal games as they seem to (generally) run quite well and developers seem to know how to use it.

There were a lot of bad decisions made here.

@dirthurts: Ah yes, that's right, it's a modified ID Tech 6 or something like that. The only sensible guess I can come up with is that Bethesda/Zenimax is now trying to use that one engine in as many games as possible, similar to EA and Frostbite. I assume this makes things run a lot smoother when handling multiple projects... but it can also bite you in the ass if that ONE engine isn't the right one, or it's unstable, or new to developers, etc. etc...

Probably several of these issues combined is what lead to this games performance I would bet.... I say this without any insider knowledge what-so-ever lol, but it'd make sense!

So long as they can fix those issues. I really want to get Dishonored 2, but I figure I should wait until Arkane has patched it up.

@Mogan: Agreed. Sadly this is the state of gaming in general but more on PC. I kind of wish there were only 3 tiers of graphics cards like 1060, 1070 and 1080 and then devs could develop with just those three in minds. And of course AMD equivelants. These days it is more beneficial to wait 6 months for a game. Get it patched, for cheaper and with dlc.

@xcreep1ngdeath: I feel like any frugal gaming fan at this point has caught on to the fact buying new games and top end hardware is a waste of money and often a test of patience! Buy mid range hardware and wait for games to go on sale and I think we'll all delay our grey hair...

@sellingthings: People with high end rigs with the most recent drivers are still experiencing poor performance. Especially with its erratic frame rate.
