Did Bungie tease 'Destiny' in Halo 3: ODST?

Former Bungie developer suggests studio embedded teaser artwork in 2009 shooter.

Just this week, Bungie released the first piece of concept art for its new game, believed to be called Destiny. However, it appears the studio embedded a Destiny teaser more than three years ago in Halo 3: ODST and none caught on until yesterday.

No Caption Provided

A Twitter user sent former Bungie developer Vic DeLeon (who now continues to work on Halo at 343 Industries) an image from Halo 3: ODST (at right) that bears a resemblance to the leaked artwork from Bungie (below) and contains the line "Destiny Awaits." DeLeon responded with, "It's finally been found!"

Notably, the same Earth-like planet is shown in both images, with a smaller white globe not far away.

Along with a range of images, the leaked Destiny document describes Bungie's new game as "fun and accessible" with a "deep, tangible and relatable" universe that is compared to the Star Wars franchise. The game is also described as "social at its core."

According to the document, Destiny's plot revolves around an alien ship bent on destroying Earth and the "knights" tasked with defending what's left of humanity.

But, but, but you have to play over 20 hours to get a "new" experience....

Keep going, you'll get there.

@pharoe777 @Ripper_TV That much to beat the game. I don't find it interesting or engaging to replay the same content OVER and OVER again, like they want you to.

"Social at its core!?" I hope Destiny won't end up or play like many of the iOS/Android games where you have to recruit, invite, swap, or trade with your friends in order to progress, or an MMO. I would rather Destiny be another Halo-like awesome game and enjoy its story and gameplay solo!

Pretty sure that the white sphere/ moon is going to be the alien ship. Funny how it kind of reminds me of the sphere in Halo 4 though, rofl for spheres

Sounds basically like the Halo series but instead of the 300 Spartans you've got Knights, sounds like it will be pretty bad arse though

Well, if that's true, I wonder if Microsoft would sue. Technically Bungie is advertising their own game using their franchise . Technically, I believe gave up rights to Halo around the time Ensemble studios made Halo Wars if not far before.

There's nothing unlawful about putting easter eggs in a game, unless the egg material requires license (the reverse situation of your statement). No one playing ODST is going to be urged to buy Destiny because they glance upon a vague poster :D

@ShimmeringSword Try telling that to a court judge. Whether people get urged to buy Destiny or not, Easter eggs can be classified as advertisement. Putting a hint of an upcoming game in a game they don't own a license to can make a plausible case. It can be any scenario or vice-versa for both the game and it's content.

People have sued over far worse than this, so I wouldn't put this out of the realm of possibility.

@deon99 @Baelath No, hes right. It sounds basically like Halo all over again, that doesn't mean its a bad thing, **** man gamers go and get all defense now and days and think they have to try and explain everything. It sounds like Halo, thers no denying that, but it also sounds pretty bad ass, I'm excite

Halo has Halos, spartans in power armor, space travel. All we see here are aliens attacking earth, defended by knights. You might want to brush up on your common scifi tropes before you say "aliens attacking" is "basically like halo".

"None caught on until yesterday?" The Bungie fanbase found this tease way back when the Destiny trademark and logo first appeared, and made the connection then.

It is pretty awesome, though. Seeing as this is Bungie's seventh universe overall (Bungie LOVES the number seven, in case you didn't know), I'm sure they've been planning this for a LONG time.

I'm hyped. I hope we get an official announcement during the VGAs...

@Malckeor To continue on your train of thought with 7's, the title, Destiny, also has 7 letters.

@psykolikwid I didn't realize that. Incredibly interesting.

Something else that's awesome, though: The last line of Marathon: Infinity (effectively the last line of the entire Marathon series) was "You are Destiny." This is an epicly goose-bumply chilling example as to how Bungie likes to subtly link all of their major universes together with quotes and Easter Eggs.

I love Bungie....Except for Reach's campaign. Let's just pretend that never happened...

oh great, does this mean a lawsuit is coming? Microsoft will argue that they own the Intellectual rights to Destiny because concept art was contained in a game created by Bungie while under contract to Microsoft?

A picture of earth with a white dot beside it is not concept art or the root of destiny intellectual property holdings. It's just an easter egg.

Personally, I'm actually excited about Destiny. A part from Bungie's good track record, I like the aim of a deep sci-fi universe, that the game apparently has some social aspect, and discovery. I actually like the premise too, that big white alien orb is actually protecting humanity, though they don't know why or what it is? I want to know what it is

@the_requiem @macca366 Pretty sure their agreement is strictly to have Activision publish the game(s), while Bungie will develop as a completely independent studio.

"none caught on until yesterday"

Really... I've known about this Destiny teaser since at least last spring and I sure some of the more hardcore Bungie faithfuls have known about it even longer.

Great investigative journalism there Gamespot...
