DICE is "looking into" allowing console players to customize Battlefield 4 controls

"When we looked at controls in Battlefield 4 we placed the team play aspect of our controls as the highest priority," says Battlefield 4 executive producer.

Battlefield 4 executive producer Patrick Bach has said the studio is looking into allowing users to fully customize their own Battlefield controls. "We have looked into it and there is quite a lot of complexity involved in that due to first-party certification issues," said Bach in an interview with Game Informer. "There is a reason you almost never see this on console games. With that said, we are looking into how we could look into this for the future."

Battlefield 4's control scheme has been modified from Battlefield 3, with one change moving team communications to a bumper button and meaning commands such as melee and vehicle countermeasures have had to be moved to elsewhere on the controller.

"When we looked at controls in Battlefield 4 we placed the team play aspect of our controls as the highest priority. We wanted players to be familiar with using spotting and the communication rose in multiplayer as well as the engage and tactical visor in single player," said Bach.

"To accomplish this we needed a button that allowed players quick access while also enabling the player to still perform all the necessary functions of Battlefield, like shooting, aiming, moving, and melee. We also know that players require consistency, especially players who will want to move from a PS3 to a PS4 or a Xbox 360 to a Xbox One. With this in mind, we moved our teamplay functions to a bumper button, which required us to make additional changes, all to highlight one of Battlefield's key strengths. It also enabled the use of the communication rose with a controller."

Explaining the decision further, Bach said that "Our default layouts are designed to be accessible and familiar to new players, while keeping teamplay and social features close at hand."

"For people who don't like these new controls [DICE is] offering a Veteran scheme that basically returns the controls to the Battlefield 3 standard, with one major difference--the [Communications] Rose is still married to the right bumper whether you are on foot or in a vehicle, which moves countermeasures and melee attacks."

PC players are still able to freely customise their Battlefield 4 controls.

Battlefield 4 will be released on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on October 29. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will follow at launch.

Why would you lock the spot/commorose function to a button traditionally used for firing your weapon or the gas pedal of a vehicle? That's beyond stupid. What's even worse, the button that did this before, the "back" button is now used for the in game Battlelog button, which is completely useless and would have been just fine as a choice in the pause menu.

Title after title, Dice continues to do some of the most mind- bogglingly stupid things only they could dream up.

controls are fucking HORRIBLE…can't even turn the jeep, tank, or ATV while it moving…WTF IS THIS MESS. 90% of the people from bf3 are going to buy this game and you decide to fuckin CHANGE THE CONTROLS DICE! you can't steer for at all. sluggish and frustrating. bf3 wasn't that hard to pick up on the controls because they were perfect. now when ur flying u have to REMOVE ur thumb from the throttle and quickly try and tap the down on the D PAD just to flare. ur just asking to die as soon as u step into a heli or jet. what a fuckin joke. bf4 FUCKED the controls up as much as possible in this game.

I don't understand why all games don't let us do this. Makes no sense to me. The most important is the inverted controls. But why in the hell can I not map a button to x if I want to?

Serious question: Why don't they allow gamers to map the controls however they wish?
I thought that's how it always use to be with most games. I haven't played a BF title in a while.

You can change the control scheme to a decent degree already, you just have to play around, for instance I use legacy sticks for helis and default buttons, southpaw for jets... I've been able to adjust heli sticks so it's been like Bad Company 1 through to the BF4 beta. I know the land vehicles have changed to Halo sticks, but I think that makes sense anyway, it just makes turning a bit more shit. Still, imagine how gay driving would feel with a keyboard & mouse. I quite like the spot button on the right bumper too, I kept using it by mistake when I went back to BF3.

All games should support this feature far more than they do. The need for customization controls has really become more important after seeing how some people with disabilities play games and some of the things they need to do. With their setups people with a fraction of the functionality of the general public can compete at the same level as everyone else but only when able to tailor their inputs as needed.

@Toysoldier34"first-party certification issues" i.e. it takes a boatload of time and cash to get Sony / MS to agree to it...just like patching, why are patches on consoles fluid every day? as they need to go through first party certification so there cannot be a patch in one day which adresses an issue which appeared that very day, it will take at least a few days until the patch is released

Ground controls were fine to me. Did not like the air controls at all. And also one problem I saw with the communication rose during the beta on consoles was that the language spoken was that of the team you were on. And the locationalize voice option did nothing. It was fine when I was on the US team but when I was on the Chinese team, no one knew what the hell you were trying to say. So hope that is fixed in the final build or maybe I missed something.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't totally remember in the beta, but at least in terms of "needs" in BF3, players icons would flash the symbol of their need (cross for health, belt of bullets for ammo). I think the in BF3, if I just heard unintelligible speech I would look for my symbol of responsibility on the minimap haha.

@DriftEJ20 The speech in BF3 could be localized to your language. And the symbol thing is in the BF4 but a lot of people dont pay attention to the minimap, especially in hardcore like I usually pay so an audio cue really helps. Also with the new comm rose, not not all command have a symbol, at least not in the beta.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I totally forgot about how useless that information is of no use. Damn, well I hope they do fix that for you and everyone else, especially the hardcore players. I think in BF3 it was also less of an issue because if you heard anything that wasn't general information like "Enemy spotted", you knew it was for you, because you couldn't request ammo or health or recommend repairs without pointing your crosshair at the appropriate teammate. Now you can just shout it in the air.

No point if keyboard and mouse isn't supported. Going to skip this game sure if not. Yes I could play it on PC, but there's PC problems with online multiplayer games, and I don't want to get involved with that shit anymore.

"First party certification issues"... I'm genuinely interested to learn more about what that means, because obviously this is not just an issue with Battlefield. I'm assuming that to put it simply it just means that Sony and Microsoft make it a pain in the ass to do, but that's probably oversimplifying it. Being primarily a PC gamer the lack of customizable inputs is certainly one of the major drawbacks of console games for me (although I don't know that it's necessarily the biggest).

At any rate making the spot button much more convenient to use seems like a pretty big deal to me, as it's such an important teamplay feature in Battlefield. Saves a ton of time and effort when you can just press a button to stick a red dorrito over the enemy instead of spending 3-5 seconds trying to explain their position over voice chat or typing. There's a reason why a lot of modern military FPS games are stealing that feature.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm certainly not arguing against a spot button. I am arguing against a spot button at the cost of altering the control scheme to the point it is not recognizable from the prior game.

Between BC2 and BF3 I've got 2000 hours of circle (PS3) being getting in and out of vehicles for example and having not a thing to do with crouching or going prone. I don't care if I can communicate with my team better if I can't function in the game.

The only change it didn't like was the vehicle controls. Switched the land vehicles to classic. On BF3 I had the sir sticks to like legacy or something. I'd really like that option in BF4

I don't mind the controls much. Had to switch melee and crouch around and constantly throw grenades when trying to give commands, but I'll get used to it. My major complaint is how hidden the scoreboard is. Not only do you have to go to the menu, you need to then go down and select it. Terrible decision imo, especially for an FPS

I like the new controls! The back button on 360 controller is too small. Finally a radio com weal for consoles, but I miss the "need backup" command. Why'd they take away?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not judging from the control schemes presented in the Beta and the remarks in the article. You're getting the comm rose and spotting on R2 (PS3.) I suppose we can hope we'll get BF3 vehicle controls with the comm rose/spotting taking the place of counter measures but I'm thinking the beta schemes are what we get.

The vehicle control schemes presented in the beta are unusable and counter intuitive to me even without all the time I have in two games before that used radically different schemes. And the vehicles are my favorite part.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That is an awful idea. "Hey let's limit the options of PC gamers just because consoles are more restrictive." You just sound spiteful to me. I much prefer their train of thought, trying to bring that customization to consoles instead of punishing PC gamers because we like being able to make optimal use of our inputs.

I understand that a lot of time goes into getting the "right" controller configuration. But why should gamers be stuck with that? If a gamer can always reset to default control settings, then what is the harm in allowing people to change up the settings for their personal liking?

I don't understand why this is even a controversy.

The "Veteran" control scheme is still god awful. Having the spot button as the R2 button is a horrible move. The vehicle controls were among the worst Ive ever used. I kept hitting fire when I wanted to reverse, this lead to constant deaths. People nowadays have Mics so having a commrose on console is worthless. Looks like the control scheme change might be a ploy to sell those official BF4 controllers that have customizable buttons.
