Diablo Immortal Left Me Surprisingly Impressed, Though Some Questions Remain

Demon hunting in bite-sized form.

To say that Diablo Immortal made a big impression on fans at BlizzCon 2018 would be putting it mildly. While it isn't the kind of Diablo many were expecting, the upcoming action-RPG brings the traditional loot-oriented hack-and-slash gameplay to mobile devices, giving players another way to play the series on-the-go. While the mobile game looks and plays very similarly to the console editions of Diablo 3, Immortal focuses a bit more on offering quick dungeon-crawler gameplay in bite-sized form with many other players online.

At BlizzCon 2018, we spent some time diving into the game and spoke with designer Wyatt Cheng about the making of Immortal--made in collaboration with NetEase Games. As the first mobile exclusive game of the series, it uses a touch-screen interface for movement and combat, while also placing a larger focus on teaming up with other players. The announcement was largely met with a negative response from fans, many of whom were expecting the reveal of the next core entry in the series. Despite this, the developers aim for Immortal to flesh out the lore of Diablo, while standing equally alongside the other games.

Now Playing: Diablo Immortal - Cinematic Trailer | Blizzcon 2018

Interestingly enough, Immortal is set during the twenty year gap between Diablo 2 and 3, showing what many familiar heroes and villains were up to during the time before the latest core entry of the series. Pulling together six familiar heroes--the Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Wizard, and the Necromancer--you'll be able to piece together the events that happened during the unknown period after Diablo 2. In our chat with the development team, they spoke about the current reception the game has had, while also elaborating a bit more on what they find is appealing about Immortal.

"We were looking at this 20 year period in between Diablo II, Lord of Destruction, and Diablo III, and we said, "All these events happened, so we should take a look at creating a game that explores that space in time," Cheng said. "We like to say that it's like Star Wars: Rogue One, which is an amazing movie. That movie takes place in between three and four, but it can be watched as a movie on its own. And it's a great movie on its own. But then if you know the lore of three and four, you're like, "Oh my goodness, this happened and that happened, and that's Vader, and whoa," and it completes the picture for you."

During the 15-minute demo on-hand at BlizzCon, we got a stronger sense of what Immortal aims to offer. When it comes to gameplay, the mobile title is very much in-line with previous Diablo games--albeit with a more streamlined approach. Though its focus is still very much on the loot grind and building up your chosen character, there's more of an emphasis on online gameplay. Though the developers refer to it as an MMO, we only got a limited glimpse of that, which felt similar to a standard online game of Diablo 3. In the full game, towns will be massive player hubs to interact with others, get new quests, and with dungeons allowing for up to four players to team up. Immortal will also have live-service model upon launch, which will add new content on a scheduled basis. But at this time, the developers weren't able to share any further details about it, or even if Immortal will be free-to-play or a paid title.

As is the case for bringing a well-loved game series to mobile, there's usually some initial apprehension. I certainly felt that when trying to figure out how the rather involved mechanics of character growth and loot would function on a touch interface. With that said, Immortal felt pretty smooth after spending some time adjusting. Movement is controlled via the left side of the screen, while skills are all placed on the right side--which can be aimed and controlled by dragging to a particular area on the screen. Picking up loot and activating objects in the environment are entirely contextual, allowing you to tap the screen to interact with them.

While Immortal is a more simplified take on the slash-and-grab mechanics of previous games--dropping the mana resource in favor of skills cooldowns, for instance--it still very much retains all the familiar and core mechanics of a Diablo game. I actually found myself enjoying the game much more than I thought I would, which surprised me. With recent advances in mobile tech, Immortal appears visually similar to the Switch release, which is impressive. The developers were keen on trying out something a bit different with the series, and they felt mobile was the next big step.

"We really rely on people here at BlizzCon who can play the demo," said the game designer. "Because I think, Chris Metzen mentioned it in our first panel, he's like, 'When I first heard about the project I was skeptical.' And I think that's reasonable in today's world, our modern world, to be a little skeptical. But then for the people who play it, if they can go out and say, 'No, no, no, seriously, guys. I was at BlizzCon. I played the demo. It was awesome.' Hopefully that word of mouth spreads."

No Caption Provided

There's still much we don't know about Diablo Immortal, and at this time, that certainly feels like it's working against it. The first impression it made at BlizzCon wasn't a great one, and that will likely continue until more details specifics on the game are revealed. With that said, Immortal has translated the core framework and mechanics down to mobile devices in an impressive way. While it certainly isn't Diablo 4, it's also clear that it's not trying to be. I don't see it as a true replacement for Diablo 3--the recent Switch version will keep me from doing that for sometime--but I can see myself playing this game during my usual downtime. I was surprisingly pleased with how Immortal played, and it'll be interesting to see how the game will pan out once it launches in 2019.

@Bread_or_Decide: Blizzard is in the wrong for building up expectations of players for a Pc series just to put it on mobile. Mobile is 90% of the time a cesspool of freemium money scams and Blizzard is making that market a priority for that reason only. Nothing entitled about them voicing their displeasure about the situation. Blizzard is not keeping their fanbase happy. Thats a big problem with many companies now a days(ie: Capcom,Konami.EA etc).

@IanNottinghamX: Except blizzard posted a blog stating that the big game in the series will not be at the con. But "gamers" want to act surprised and angry because this is all gamers are now. It's sad and pathetic.

@Bread_or_Decide: I love the entitled gamer argument when gamers are consumers and purchase product and expect product to be something they actually want to purchase. You would have a point about entitled gamers if games were raining free from the skies landing on our devices. But that isn't the case. This is business. Customers are customers. Period.

@Bread_or_Decide: It wasn't really entitlement as such. Not that I can see, anyway. Sure, they were told not to get their hopes up, but it's been a while since D3 dropped, and when gaming sites (IGN in particular) fanned the flames of expectation by dropping all kinds of speculative articles full of conjecture about how D4 may be on the way, or possibly a true Diablo MMO or whatnot, you can't fault fans of the series for getting excited.

I think that Immortal suffered from what was primarily a poorly-handled announcement. Blizzard's usual tight-lipped strategy really worked against them. In the past, when they dropped a new game or expansion, it was likely something gamers were already anticipating and something they wanted. A WoW expansion, a new Diablo, a new shooter (okay, not everyone was excited here, but you get it).

In this case, people were expecting some crazy new property or at least a continuation of the franchise they loved, only to be underwhelmed by a mobile game, which is something of a dirty word in the industry, and for good reason. Most are poorly-produced cash grabs that are absolute garbage without pumping a ton of cash into them, and even then, pretty mediocre.

I think Blizzard would've been wise in this case to come out and state in advance, "Hey guys, we hear you! We're hard at work on our next installment of the Diablo franchise, but in the meantime, we've developed a really cool side-adventure for those of you who want to take Diablo with you on the go. Based in the same lore and world, Immortal lets you drop-in and play for burst sessions with other gamers around the world. We've developed this game from the ground up, so you can expect the same standard we bring to all of our games, which is to say, we're re-inventing what it means to 'mobile game' with an adventure that promises to reward you for hours."

Something like that. Blind-siding people with something that looks, at first blush, indistinguishable from the heaps of Chinese trash mobile games was a very, very bad move. This isn't just entitlement. Most games don't get hit with 95% awful feedback for a mere announcement. Blizzard done #$&%ed up.

@Bread_or_Decide: Tell that to EA and their recent BF5 debacle and preorders reaching an an all new low for the franchise. Gamers DO band together and won't purchase a product when they know/feel they have been wronged. But hey, that's capitalism. That's also a good thing.

@Utnayan: Gamers were wrong in their hate against the AH in D3 too. Children killed my game back then. So now you are left with an empty game with no long term play and no challenge. Grzt for that.

The reason is obvious: most gamers are dumb. The did not play in hardcore - instant death - mode and crafted and traded and grinded through a Gold AH where everyone constantly dies and needs new leveling gear...

No they only saw the money AH and whined. Killing off the game in hardcore mode I really loved.

That’s your whining public.

We got rid of it because WE THE PLAYERS were vocal enough so Blizzard knows not to cross its boundaries again. Stop pushing everything we ever loved down the shit hole again, please?

@Bread_or_Decide: Of course. Thats why its a cash grab. A cash grab they introduced to a large group of pc gamers who paid a lot of money to go to their AAA gaming show. The backlash is justified.

@fedor: uhhh how do you possibly argue for this game? It obviously exists so they can get that microtransaction funnel going until its outlawed, or made irrelevant.

Thats the end. Of anything that can possibly be said.

EDIT: PLUS, people have a right to boo. I just watched Buffalo boo their own team the other day.

@wexorian: Why? Because 100 million players will play Diablo on their cell phones and tablets in a game that FINALLY will allow Diablo to be played as it SHOULD be played with grinding, crafting AND trading?

Go to your elitist gamer attitude and think you are a better person for playing a PC only game.

I don’t care. I will have finally fun again with Diablo.

So what standard are we using here exactly.

An awesome Diablo game? Or an awesome non-port mobile game that doesn't really improve if at all compared to the other games.

Because if it's the former, then I'm expecting a top end console like experience that is the next big step for the franchise. And I can understand you're impressed.

Otherwise, why wouldnt I just replay the other Diablo games for this?

@Iemander: Because this Diablo version will actually offer trade and so it gives back to the players what has been stolen from them: an Auction House.

I will never forget the true enemy of D3 at launch: the moaning children in this adult game that became WORTHLESS the moment they scrapped the Gold only AH in hardcore mode.

You moaners killed my game. That is why I love this new version.

Seems fine, for a mobile game. I'm not real interested, but I also didn't convince myself a job posting and some vague teases meant anything specific, so this game doesn't bother me either. Diablo III is still good and getting updates, and I don't know what a Diablo IV would look like that we haven't all done a zillion times.

Ahem this sounds like PR riddled nonsense. I've watched a lot of gameplay streams of the demo and this take is extremely exaggerated. For instance -

"Its focus is still very much on the loot grind and building up your chosen character."

-- There was no real loot in the demo. It only displayed items (copy/pasted from D3) on the ground and you picked it up. You couldn't see its effects or equip them because the inventory was locked. The devs even stated that the itemization is still being decided on. On "building your character" again no info was given in the Q&A panels on this. In the demo you were assigned a 5 skills and could not change them.

"Towns will be massive player hubs to interact with others, get new quests, and with dungeons allowing for up to four players"

-- Massive player hubs? Seriously there is no way this is not over bloated. Also you contradict yourselves as the demo and the gameplay footage showed 6 players together in a party. Yes it could change later and the 4 player limit could be applicable to dungeons but neither of this is stated.

"With recent advances in mobile tech, Immortal appears visually similar to the Switch release, which is impressive"

-- Firstly there are better looking mobile games on the mobile market both artistically and graphically. Oh and is it similar to a 6 year port of game on the Switch? Much tech so wow. Again this is intentionally misleading.

"I was at BlizzCon. I played the demo. It was awesome."

--- I know this was just a statement but this article and a lot of similar ones on IGN, Kotaku etc are saying its either painfully average or pretty good. Which is the polar opposite of the general consensus of the people (both streamers and fans) that played it and are trashing it for being a generic reskin of similar Chinese mobile games and Diablo 3 itself. Come on the character classes along with their most popular skills are all just reused. The classes have at max 2-3 new skills out of a total of 12 skills. 12 skills in an ARPG - just sad.

In conclusion, GJ Gamespot thanks for the in-depth "journalism"

@mrdinghat: Probably because mobile is huge. I imagine the people who asked for it were the higher ups at Blizzard, who looked at how big mobile is and said, "We want in on that."

As far as scrapping the game, at this point, I'd guess a lot. If they're showing demos and announcing dates, development is probably about done and any contracts with third parties are probably inked. More importantly, why would they scrap this now?
