Diablo 3's Next Big Patch Adds New Areas, Reworks Seasons, and More

Full details on what to expect from update 2.4.0.

The next big update for Diablo III, patch 2.4.0, has been unveiled at BlizzCon, and it brings with it quite a lot of new content and more than a few changes.

Set Dungeon
Set Dungeon

A brand-new zone called Greyhollow Island will be introduced in 2.4.0. This area is only accessible through Adventure mode and features new enemy types. Adventure mode players will also be able to access expanded versions of two other areas where new events and bounties can be found: The Ruins of Sescheron will extend into a place called the Eternal Woods, while the Royal Quarters will now be reachable through Leoric's Manor. You can see these in gallery above.

Besides the new locales, there will also be new things to do. This includes Set Dungeons, which Blizzard says are a chance for players "to learn and master their sets inside and out." Once you've equipped all six pieces of a class set, you'll get a clue that leads you to a dungeon that's designed to challenge you while using that specific set. The designs of these dungeons aren't randomized, as is normally the case. By completing one, you'll get a set-specific cosmetic reward.

Greater Rifts also get an optional upgrade. Particularly rich players can choose to spend their gold to turn one into an Empowered Rift. By completing one of these, you'll get an additional upgrade chance for your Legendary Gems.

New Legendary items are on the way, with more than 40 new Legendary powers in this patch. What you won't see anymore going forward are Seasonal Legendary items; all of the new Legendary items will be available whether you're playing a Season 5 character or standard one. As an alternative incentive, completing the Season Journey will reward you with a six-piece class set suited to your current class. You'll also be able to earn up to 10 additional stash tabs by playing through Season Journeys (which comes in addition to the ability for Reaper of Souls owners to buy even more with gold).

The transition from one season to the next should be smoother beginning with Season 5. A new feature called Season Rebirth allows you to easily transfer a character from the previous season to the new one, rather than needing to make a new character. Opting for Rebirth will reset the character's level to 1 and transfers any Paragon levels and items over to your non-seasonal characters (giving you 30 days to claim the items). This lets you keep using with the same character name and continue adding to that character's play time.

Other changes of note: Many sets items are being reworked or overhauled, and new ones are being added. This includes a new two-ring set that offers an 800 percent damage increase and 4 percent damage reduction for each Ancient item you have equipped--but only if you aren't taking advantage of any other set bonuses. Additionally, the buff UI is being improved to reduce the clutter. And the console versions' Action Combat system is coming to PC, offering temporary buffs and experience bonuses for rapidly killing enemies, destroying environmental objects, and so on.

There's no date on when 2.4.0 will be released, but Blizzard says it'll be arriving on public test servers "in the weeks following BlizzCon."

They should fix broken G-sync support and give a UI scaling options now they scaled the UI for 4K resolution. I was fine with the tiny UI and got used to it and now it's HUGE! Just us scaling option.

I should give this a go again at some point - I finished the original Vanilla, but was overall very disappointed by many ways in which it deviated from the Diablo 2 formula. But it's probably worth firing it up again when this new patch comes out to see how all the changes and additions they have made play out - I mean, I already own it, right?

@xantufrog: If you only finished the story in vanilla then you've seen nothing the game has to offer. At this point the story is like less than 10% of what you can do.

@Zorlac: I played through two difficulty levels online with my friend - not sure what the game had to offer beyond banging your head against the same wall again at yet another difficulty level. I appreciate that now there is an expansion and many things have changed through the patches. But it's not like I didn't give it a fair shake...

@xantufrog: Like I said if the story in vanilla you've seen nothing. The changes and additions with the expansion were massive. Reaper of souls is probably the best example of what an expansion should be. Honestly if you don't have the expansion, you HAVEN'T given it it's fair shake. It really turned the game from just another ARPG into a real Blizzard game that shows what Blizzard can do.

You've not seen rifts, great rifts, greed's vault, bounties, hell adventure mode at all. Seasons, the tons upon tons of new sets, legendaries, and legendary powers, oh, extracting legendary powers, Kami's Cube (spelling). Yeah, you're missing a lot, and most of that doens't even start till you hit 70. Difficulty levels in the story mode mean nothing anymore.

@xantufrog: You can get a Reaper of Souls cd-key cheaper on a 3rd party site than blizzard's own store... and you won't regret it, either.

@emmm78: Probably won't happen. Diablo's extensive inventory system and abilities automatically rules PvP out of the question. Maybe if there's a mode where players fight with no equipment and preset range of "builds". Otherwise, its only Heroes of the Storm and WoW for all that PvP action.

@unDeny: Firstly, you say Diablo`s inventory system and abilities are much more complex than WoW`s, so PVP is ruled out. So in WoW PVP happens only with players with no equipment and of the same "build" by your logic. Second of all I wasn`t talking about making it a MMO. Just some good old PVP action, meaning of course, that they should think of a way of balancing characters. Moreover, Blizzard was talking about arenas for a while and then dropped the subject completely. What the ... was this then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzD9Zf0CDY0 ?

Diablo 3...the game that keeps on giving! This is very awesome. The most awesome thing about it? It doesn't cost any additional money!! Other companies/games would charge another $15 to $20 for this kind of content.

D3 is a GREAT game! Stuff like this constantly has me coming back to the game and enjoying it for 100s of hours more.

@otterbee: Well, in order to get something from this update you have to have ROS. And when ROS costs more than base game, of course they wont ask money for update that adds few sets and dungeons.

@deivis_sc: But isn't all the additional content FOR RoS? Doesn't that then justify the price of the expansion? I mean, its A LOT of content from the base game.

@Ripper_TV: Hahaha... not only is ROS both a fantastic expansion and absolutely essential for D3... but you can get a cd-key for it really cheap from 3rd party sites. Not worth the price lmao

@Ripper_TV: Reaper of souls is a shining example of one of the best examples of an expansion ever. it fixed almost everything wrong with the base game, and added tons upon tons of content.

the core diablo team is probably hard at work making a f2p diablo game that will have serious esport potential. Blizzard has tournaments for everything they do except diablo atm.

great ,more sets,a set to reduce sets, more powercreep as usual ...typical patch that only sounds good on paper, nothing will change. Expansion with some core changes was needed not a patch.

I was so hoping for another expansion, I'd love to jump back in. But this isn't enough with all the games out now, especially after I maxed out every class and have over 200 hours in xb1 version. I wasn't sure where they could go after the last one any ways.

@excelsion: There's pvp and you can trade whatever you find with other people of your group. I have no idea wtf pvp and trade cities are supposed to be but whatever it is it's probably a stupid idea... And those "lasers" are arcane magic, something who's been part of diablo since... forever ?
