Diablo 3 on PS4 supports Remote Play

[UPDATE] Blizzard amends original statement, says game does in fact support Remote Play.

[UPDATE] Blizzard has amended its original state. The company now says Diablo III on PS4 will support Remote Play.

The original story is below.

Diablo III on PlayStation 4--the Ultimate Evil Edition--does not support Remote Play, at least not right now, senior level designer Matthew Berger told GameSpot at BlizzCon last night.

"Not really. Not for the moment," Berger said.

Part of the reason why comes down to the PlayStation Vita's screen being too small to effectively allow players to view the action and manage their inventories, Berger said.

"The Vita is an amazing piece of kit, but the screen is still smaller," he said. "And when you look at--and also it has its own aspect ratio--and when you look at Diablo III, there's a lot happening on-screen already. You get surrounded by your enemies, lots of effects flying off in every direction. The inventory can be pretty complicated to navigate sometimes when you have lots of items."

Berger did tease, however, that Remote Play support for the PS4 version of Diablo III is something Blizzard continues to think about.

"So it would be a little bit more of stretch. It's kind of percolating in the back of our mind, but we don't really have any plans right now," he said.

Remote Play allows certain console games to be played on the PS Vita. Nintendo offers similar functionality for the Wii U, allowing users to play some games completely off-screen via the GamePad.

Diablo III for PS4 will launch in 2014. Check back later for more from BlizzCon on the next-generation version of Blizzard's dungeon crawler that has sold over 14 million copies.

I've tried out the remote player feature with Diablo 3. So far, its borderline unplayable. I will say that I am currently playing while my wife is watching Netflix thru our TV's wireless. However, I have 105mbps and am typically easily able to have HD movies and games playing together.

The connection isn't the only issue. So far the controls are not re-mappable and using skills with the touchpad is just terrible, in my opinion.

The remote play feature has worked stellar on most other games I have played. I think PlayStation and Blizzard need to put time in together to work out re-mapping controls and perhaps working on the streaming quality (again, see the Netflix variable above).

I want Remote Play.

Let gamers be the judge of what is "too small" or "too busy". Plenty of reviews said that Demon's Crown on PS Vita was "busy" but I had no problems seeing through all the action. And a 2D brawler like that is harder to get the right 'angle' (not sure what word to use there) to nail someone in the face with some arrows. So if that can work...

By comparison Diablo 3 would be a cakewalk. Since lining up attacks in games like it are far easier to do. Plus, there are games like that on Vita already. That overpriced iOS game that's also on PSN... forgot what it's called.

Nice to see developers jumping over the whole 'mandatory' thing so early in a console's lifespan.

Very encouraging there Blizzard.

@emptycow718 Sure, but that doesn't make Kinect games any more FUN. Dance Central is fun with a group of friends, but absolutely none of the Kinect-enabled games thus far were actually worth more than an hour or so of gimmicky play. Shouting out spells in Skyrim wasn't any more fun than "Liara Stasis" -- and I'm certainly not going to stand up to play an FPS to "lean" around a corner.

I game on ALL platforms, and motion control is only suited to a SMALL percentage of games -- regardless of any platform fanboy-ism out there.

Another Sony lie revealed only days before release. If this were any other product, people would be absolutely outraged at all the bait and switch we have been dealing with. Yet because it is a console, people will ignore it, or downplay it, because to complain about a problem, is undermining the "console war effort". This is what fanboyism breeds, lack of accountability for console makers. Once people have chosen their "side", they refuse to hear negativity about it and make excuses for stuff like this. Thank you to all the people who perpetuate this consumerist sheep behavior.

@Stavrami @jackiedebs

People keep saying this. Is it confirmed to be in the game? If so, what's your source? Just asking.

As for "Jackie's" comment about fanboyism, yes, people tend to engage in bizarrely apologetic behaviors when a console they've invested money in is involved.

I own a white Vita with a gorgeous OLED screen and nothing I find interesting to play on it. I was promised a Hulu Plus and Crunchyroll app that fell off the face of the earth a while back. It never came. I really have very little do on the console. I take it that you own a Vita too.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Dude, I'm really falling for my vita...but it's mainly for the indie games (part of the reason I'm excited for my PS4 and was going to stick with that (Before caving in and buying both consoles...)

If you're all over the indie scene on PC, then fair enough; but Thomas Was Alone, Guacamelee, Limbo, Mutant Blobs Attack, Stealth Inc alongside Persona 4 have kept me with loads of things to do (in the short amounts of time where I can't play a normal console/have to do boring stuff like work/eat/sleep/talktopeople)

To everyone pretending like this signifies bad times for remote play... It's not as simple as developers just being able to "opt out" of remote play because they don't feel like it. Have you PLAYED Diablo 3 on console? That screen gets so massively full that I was wondering why they didn't expand the visual area a bit. Now trying to squeeze that into a vita would take a LOT of development time to make it work >well<. Sure they could just "turn on" the remote play, but if it makes the game near-unplayable why would you want them to do so just for the sake of allowing it.

They would have to practically re-make Diablo 3 to be able to play on Vita without any problems. Here are just a few things:

1) Remake the Inventory screen ENTIRELY. A far less spacious screen would be needed, such as what Kingdoms of Amalur uses.

2) Have the game detect when you go into remote-play mode so it can completely reconfigure the screen size/shape to something Vita-suitable. Killzone: Shadow Fall is first-person, so you get the same field of vision regardless of the screen size. Diablo 3, on the other hand, would need to find a way to give you the same field of vision as it does on console, but without shrinking the screen to the point that it's hard to discern what's happening on-screen.

3) Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition is coming out for both consoles and I'm fairly certain that's remote-play compatible, so why wouldn't MLB The Show?

4) So far Diablo 3 is the only special case, and even then the only reason is not because "We don't really care for Remote Play," but more "Implementing Remote Play in Diablo 3 would cause a gameplay experience difference of such a massive scale, we would more or less end up building a completely new game."

Trust me, I would have loved for Diablo 3 to be remote-play compatible, but at least learn the difference between what is reasonable and what isn't.

Besides, even if it's not added in by Diablo 3 release, they could always patch it in. Think Assassin's Creed's patch that introduced trophies into the game. Give it some time, as see if maybe they've come up with a solution closer to the release.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Chill dude, trust me it's not all doomsday.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i understand people want the choice, and that's perfectly okay. What I'm saying though is that if they are going to implement it, they should actually take time to make it worthwhile somehow. I would rather hear them say "Sure, we'll have remote play, but not until a later patch so we've optimized it for Vita." instead of "Remote play will be enabled at launch, and well... yeah, that's it. If you can play like that fine, if you can't, oh well."

There's also the problem of public image and criticism. If they don't add remote play, then people will mention it, but it won't be as huge a thing as if they allowed remote play and it was a horrific experience. The latter can cause reviews to fall, the Vita's power to be questioned instead of Diablo 3's playability on a small screen, and cause Diablo 3 to be used an example of why "Remote play isn't a worthwhile endeavor."

I will say this though, and I think many will agree: if Vita TV is announced for North America (or at least confirmed for a global release), then the probability of Diablo 3 having remote play SKYROCKETS.

This does lead to a more general question of how developers will handle Remote Play on the Vita's smaller, lower-resolution screen. Small text like subtitles and menu items may be too small to be readable when projected onto the Vita's five-inch screen.

Sadly this confirms all of my fears about Remote Play. Despite Sony's claims 6 months ago that Remote Play was mandatory for all games that didn't require some sort of peripheral, it's just not true. If developers can opt-out of Remote Play at will, I don't know why any would participate. Sony will implement with some of their first-party titles like Killzone and Knack. But that's a far cry from the promise months ago that RP would be present in virtually every game.

Wonder what approach Sony will take with MLB The Show? Sony wouldn't even give buyers a discount on the PS3 / Vita combo of The Show '13. Why would they risk losing sales of the Vita version next year by allowing Remote Play from PS4?

Not that I'm interested in the feature, but I thought Sony were going to make sure every PS4 game supports remote play unless it was a game using the camera. Diablo is just a bog standard dungeon hack and slash so why the special treatment.

I have nothing against Diablo. These types of games are a lot of fun. I remember playing Champions of Norrath on PS2 and really enjoyed it, so I may give this one a try. Hopefully you can do it coop with a friend via PSN, because the two controller coop in Champions of Norrath was epic fun. I notice you get an AI companion Diablo, so coop would be a good fit.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They did make it sound like every game would use remote play to begin (except games using ps eye) with, but have, for the past few months, changed the wording to reflect they would expect most games to use it. They said it was really easy to implement so I'm not sure why blizzard don't enable the feature, hopefully it doesn't turn out to be for technical reasons.

Same reason they aren't doing anything to support the Vita. They aren't wasting resources on platforms that didn't sell.

I would imagine Diablo 3 on Vita would be sexy as hell, though I'm not sure if it would work every well controls wise. There are a lot of keys to be used on Diablo.

So does this mean that the "compulsory Remote Play" thing was just a load of crap or did they mean only for games that weren't just direct copies of current gen games?

I'm telling you now Sony, Vita remote play is one of the few reasons why I actually want your console. Especially since your game line up so far sucks ass and your controller makes me want to self harm.

If Xbox One wasn't so much money I would probably go over there, so if you don't deliver on Vita with remote play chances are I'll just end up selling that as well eventually. I mean if that was the case Vita is as good as dead anyway. Sure not going to keep it just to play some shitty Indie titles.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think if the Vita was larger (chunkier) so there was actually something to hold it with and make it more comfortable and they added R2,3 and L2,3 buttons it would be perfect.

But in games that use most of those things you would need to use the touch pad on the back and that is going to be weird at first. Might get used to it over time but I'm not totally confident of that.

You guys should try to read before making stupid comments like some of them below. The only reason it is not doing remote play is because of the overhead view of the diablo game. Seriously, with such a small screen, can you even properly navigate in the game on the vita?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Thing is, back in May Sony claimed that Remote Play was MANDATORY for every game that didn't require an add-on peripheral like the PS Eye. If true, that would have been a huge selling point for the PS4.

But it's apparently not true and it sounds like devs can simply opt-out of Remote Play at will. Really, I'm not sure why any developers would even allow Remote Play. If RP were mandatory, they would sell a lot fewer crap-tastic Vita ports of Call of Duty, Madden, LEGO games, Arkham, etc. I can't see Activision allowing RP of COD: Ghosts when they're still trying to sell the awful Vita version of Black Ops priced at $50!! (But I guess we'll know for sure on this one in a few days.)
